Inbetween sharing her needlework talents with other WI members, Mrs Deller almost wore herself out with the effort of trying to make the Anderson Shelter more comfortable. Mr Deller had made a thorough job of the construction and had done his best to disguise it by moving some of the shrubbery. He had even found a roll of lino in the attic, with which he lined the floor and some of the sides. A set of bunks and two chairs were squeezed in. Then Mrs Deller went to work with blankets and the cushions. A bolster for each bunk (stuffed with Mr Deller’s old socks which had gone beyond darning) along with two pillows each in delicately embroidered cases. An old pair of living room curtains were turned into bedspreads and another hung at the shelter entrance to keep the draught out. Crocheted blankets were draped across the chairs and a small paraffin stove brought in.

Boy settled down to his petit-point while we three women sat with idle hands. He had a talent for needlework, had hemstitched some of the sheets for the Queen’s doll’s house and had covered many chairs at Silkin and at Hampton.
