as it's that time of year again, I just want to say quite unironically that these lines from Francis Scott Key's greatest hit go very hard:

like, the Americans are being continuously bombarded by enemy artillery and they're finding something positive about it - it's providing illumination so they can see their flag still flying and that gives them hope and courage. It's kinda like the line attributed to Leonidas of Sparta about massed Persian arrows providing pleasant shade for fighting the battle of Thermopylae.
