A Page from the Drawing Papers Archive
This page from Drawing Papers 50 features a tantra drawing by an anonymous artist from Jodhpur made with gouache, watercolor, and tempera on paper in 2003.
The 2004 exhibition Field of Color: Tantra Drawings from India brought together 30 works on paper from the Northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan. The drawings were originally intended to serve as meditation aids for followers of the Tantric school of Hinduism. They reflect the highly symbolic worldview of Tantrism, using color to help the viewer achieve a heightened state of enlightenment. The color and intensity of the images conveys an attitude towards life - the oscillation of the shapes on the page suggesting an ideal balancing of the forces and energies of the world.
The Drawing Papers are a series of publications documenting The Drawing Center’s exhibitions and public programs and providing a forum for the study of drawing. For more information about Drawing Papers 50, click here.
