The moment Joey speaks, the world around Lockie may as well be fading away, dulling to a rare silence; focus exclusively on Joey.

"... What is it, Joey?"

A brief glance over his shoulder means that Lockie saw Joey getting up from the floor, and halts his run, the smile on his face gone for a second as genuine concern strikes him.

"Oi, Joey—you good?"

He knows that scramble. Knows that joey's trying to save face. Act like it didn't happen. Lockie is nothing if not trying to make sure everyone is comfortable and happy. He jogs on over to joey, slinging an arm over his shoulders and jabbing him in the chest.

"Fucks sake, mate! Send us a postcard next time you trip without me! Fuck the race, I'll get the ciders, come on!"

With a flick of his thumb, his lighter catches, casting shadows across his face that do nothing to hide a slight flush as he lights his cigarette. At least when Lockie's hand connects to his chest, it's clear that he doesn't take notice.

"Is that all it takes to get you to buy me a drink?" Joey quips back through the now lit cigarette dangling from his lips.

He's not going to bring attention to the fact that when he steps to follow Lockie there is a distinct pain in his ribs. It'll be fine with some ibuprofen and a drink, he thinks. He leans into the arm draped over him, nothing unusual for the two of them.

"Imma get fucked up, bro - and Imma eat like 6 sausages, too."

As if copying Joey's actions, Lockie brings a vape out of his pocket, pulling a hit that when exhaled makes the air taste like artificial, sugary-sweet apples.

"Oi nah, I'm buyin' yous a drink, because then you owe me one. It's simple bloody maths, mate."

He's got no clue where he's walking with Joey. As they move through the nicotine-and-vape haze of their own creation, part of him hopes they don't reach their destination anytime soon; he's happy to have an arm around Joey's shoulders a little longer before he's got to hold onto a hot cider.

Aimlessly wandering, Lockie can't help take in everything. The snow. The winter garments. The couples. The families. Joey. The city lights. Joey. It's like something out of a hallmark movie, something he didn't think he'd ever experience in his life.

"... I know we haven't done here much yet, but bloody hell, this is heaps fun!"

He doesn't say 'with you'. He doesn't tell Joey 'You make being here fun'. He wishes he did.

"Oi, look cunt—Ciders there!"

He leans forward, hands in his pockets stretched taut just to bark out a laugh.

"Fuck—You're on, mate!" His timberland boots scraped against the concrete floor, before he launched into a heavy stepped jog through the market.

It's ridiculous, really. Lockie has no idea where this alleged hot cider place is, and he has a feeling Joey doesn't either. It makes rushing through the crowds, lungs struggling from laughing in the cold on their time off together something that is entirely theirs.

Lockie cherishes these moments spent laughing his ass off with Joey. Even as he barrels through the crowds with an onslaught of 'Sorry! Sorry mate! Racin' my mate!'

He's a mess of laughter, not a single care in the world at the looks they're getting, just the easy happiness that time with Lockie always brings.

He side steps around a couple in the crowd, weaves around an employee pushing a trash can, dodges a small child whose parent should definitely have that kid on a leash and

- slip!

His boot slides in snow on the ground, launching him face forward with a trajectory pin pointed at the ground. There's enough time to catch himself before he suffers a broken nose, but not enough that his scramble to get back up looks anything like graceful.

The hat he's lost in the tumble immediately gets shoved back on his head, backward this time, and he fishes a pack of cigs from his pocket to shove in his mouth.

Casual.

And just like that any anxieties about Christmas or the other couples surrounding them fall away when a laugh gets pulled from Joey. It feels entirely different than laughing with his friends back home. He's unable to even recover from it when Lockie speaks again.

"Who's fucking spiders, bro?" He feigns confusion, just to point out the ridiculousness in the statement. "Is that what you do back in Straya?"

The shove back, retaliation for the elbow to his arm, is the reason why they so often end up wrestling, laughing and out of breath. The thought here is comical, both of them in the snow. He's not sure Lockie would survive it.

When he spots the stall seemingly selling the object of their desires, his gaze flicks to Lockie and then back.

"Race you? Whoever loses pays."

With Lockie, it's easy. Their friendship, every second spent together, Joey doesn't have to worry about his past or how he's perceived or anything but enjoying himself.

Which includes drinking.

"Nah, bro, I'm used to this. Happens every year, y'know. I could use a drink, though."

There are couples all around them - a woman hanging on her boyfriend purchasing ornaments, two girls holding hands as they share the warmth of a outdoor heater, a family swinging their child joyfully laughing.

Joey shoves his hands in his Carharrt. How stupid does he feel to be jealous of these people when Lockie looks so incredibly happy?

"I heard they got some kinda hot cider here, supposed to be good. You wanna try that?"

A grin spreads over Lockies face, accompanied by a jab of his elbow into Joeys arm.

"Hot cider? I'll drink you under the table, cunt!"

The foul word lands in that jovial way only Lockie manages; A jesters privilege, or maybe it's just a deflection. And deflect he does, walking backward into a market he doesn't know the layout of, smiling like he has no care in the world.

Used to this. Maybe Lockie could get used to this too. He's not thinking about the cold. Not thinking about celebrating Christmas in Winter or being in America. Jesus. What is he thinking about? Even he isn't sure.

"C'mon, Joey; We didn't come here to fuck spiders!"

Joey and Lockie were inseperable, attached at the hip his ma would say. They spent their forty (sometimes more) hours of work together. And off the clock, their free time was spent playing games and drinking.

It's the reason why the moment Joey saw a post advertising a Christmas market nearby, he sent the thing over to Lockie. It certainly wasn't the fact that Joey had some creeping little thought in his head that Lockie should experience a Christmas in the snow like things were meant to be.

When the day comes for them to go, there's snow falling lightly, sticking to the fabric of his beanie. One flake in particular catches Joey's eye that lands on Lockie's cheek and promptly melts.

He could swear he's blushing.

There's an air of pure, childlike awe on Lockie's face. He's seen snow, sure, he got perhaps 3 days a year of light snow in his rural home in New South Wales. But that's in July, never for Christmas. For an Aussie, Christmas consisted of Summer BBQ's and poolside relaxation.

The festivities of market goers, Christmas lights, seasonal decor and being with Joey makes it all feel... Special.

Really, really special.

"... Fuckin' oath, Joey—It's like a bloody Christmas movie."

As the words are breathed out, he pulls his gaze away from the festivities to look at Joey instead. There's a fleeting moment of reflection; Thankful that he made the decision to enlist because it led him to this; Whether this means being here in the snow or being here with Joey, he isn't sure. The sentimentality hits him square in the jaw, turning away to shove his hands into his pockets. He'll figure it out some other time!

"You cold, brah? We should find some hot bevvies or somethin'."
