            Exactly a year ago was one of the unforgettable nights I had in my whole life. I cannot thank enough those people who absolutely tried their best to be present even though the first thing they needed that time was sleep and a little bit of rest. Although these letter is a year late, I’m still grateful as I was or even more, (actually). Looking back, I am not regretting at all that I followed my mother’s suggestion to throw a party so I have something to remember (in the future) that there was a time in my life that you celebrated with me because I just turned eighteen, legal, and healthy. 

           I am trying hard not to turn cheesy or mushy in this letter but maybe you can forgive me if I fail. You’re my greatest blessings I have ever received here in Hellbi. :)

           I cannot pinpoint which is the highlight of my 18th celebration because everything was. But one thing I am sure of (now) is... what happened last year was a highlight, and will always continue as my one. 

-with my batchmates, PANGAKO. We just celebrated our 3rd Anniversary last August 18.

- finally, a decent picture with them.

- Bobo Sht. effortless. but why, Jaydison, why?

- with the PowerBatch. :) The ate’s and kuya’s who introduced me to CBI, especially to the first one, kuya Ed. <3

- with Batch Biyaya or the trese... Trivia: I received “Biyaya’s Mamita Award” last Tameme Award 2014.

- with Batch Pag-ibig & with my niece Toneth. A year passed and I grew closer with these babies. Reba Joy, Jill, Tet, Domi and Bimbam.

-with the only Batch Yaman’s representative, EJ.

WEIRD DREAM

I was in my apartment in Elbi, sitting on the floor. I put my earphones on listening to something I can’t remember. Then, there was a knock on my door. I opened the door and there was a violet dinosaur in my front door. I knew all along that he is Barney but because it is a dream it is normal to have whoever exists in the story. I asked Barney what he needs then; he suddenly has this pocket in his heart and got something in it. He handed me a paper. It is a long list of songs. I remember creasing my forehead.

(Forgot the details after).

The next scene was I was one of the characters in Barney’s show. I even sing with him including his own song…

 “I love you, you love me.

We’re a happy family

With a great big hug

And a kiss from me to you.

Won’t you say you love me too?”

Then, I don’t know what is wrong but suddenly Maya and Elli running towards me and trying to pull me away from Barney. Maya even threatened Barney to stay away or else they will be cutting his tail off. I have no idea why they hate Barney so I’ve asked them why.

Maya said, “Masama iyan, ate”. Then, Elli spoke too. “Oo nga, ate Sha. He broke my earphones.”

Barney was provoked when he heard us and tried to attack us. We ran but I cannot run any faster. The good thing is Maya and Elli rescued me by holding my both hands and we ran together. We hid in 7/11 Grove.

Again, I was in my apartment together with the two (Maya and Elli) and a new character, Reba. Reba was combing her hair when she said, “Si Barney at Garfield ay iisa.”

Humor Works

In celebration of the 400th Year of the Municipality of Los Banos, Laguna, the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) under the Department of Humanities, College of Arts Sciences in partnership with Harmonya: The String Ensemble of UPLB, COMA193: Directed Studies in Theater Class, and Tanghalan UPLB Samasining presented Ang Barbero ng Laguna of Om Velasco. The play is considered as a Philippine adaptation of the play Le Barbier de Seville (The Barber of Seville) of the French romantic playwright, Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. Also, the said play was performed in the Maquiling Performance Garden, College of Arts and Sciences Annex 2 Building, UPLB, Laguna last October 27-29 of year 2015. It was directed by Joey Ting, one of the known theater and television directors in entertainment industry and in the university. He collaborated with Jeremy dela Cruz for the choreography and movements of the actors in the play.

It was obvious in the play that characters portray the 19th century Filipino people for their costumes, names and other social norms were reinvented from what is usual in the said century without removing the contemporary magical realism influenced by the French in the play. The story of the play is about a handsome and wealthy man named Almaviva played by Anton Segismundo alternating with Isko Valera who fell in love with a fragile woman named Rosalinda played by Sarina Sasaki alternating with Matel Patayon. The conflict part of their love story is Rosalinda is under the strict supervision of Bartholo played by Nikulous Aranas alternating with Gelo Aurigue, an old dentist who is a jealous man and who locks Rosalinda in his house preventing her from socializing outside, and forces her to marry him as soon as possible. Bartholo has a partner in crime who happens to be the music teacher of Rosalinda which is named Buenaflor played by Rudyard Pesimo alternating with James Bella, who is very much in love with gold and money. Moreover, Almaviva has his sidekick too. His name is Figaro which is played by Josiah Santos alternating with Third Alub, who happens to work under Bartholo. Because of this, Figaro used this as an opportunity to help Almaviva in his plans to get Rosalinda. On the other side, the ones responsible for the set design were Eunice del Rosario and Desiree Escobido. The set has six rectangle objects. Every two rectangles have the same size. They were positioned according to height. The two tallest rectangles with the same size was placed farthest on the actual stage. The rectangle objects have double purposes. The one side represents the outside setting of the story of the play while the other side represents the inside Bartholo’s house. The lighting turned brighter when the characters are on the outside while when they were inside the house, it turned darker, specifically color red. In addition, the music used in the play was live. It was played by Harmonia, a string ensemble of the university in direction of Jonathan Macuroy. The songs used in the play were original compositions of OPM artists however, only the melody was used, the lyrics were changed according to the dialogue of the characters depending on what emotion they want to portray.

Although the play intended to deliver a romantic plot, it also has an intention to make the audience laugh by exaggerating the movements and dialogue of the characters. As a matter of fact, when lead actors deliver their lines, they tend to dance, any kind of dances that are familiar to people like the phenomenal ‘Cha-cha’ of GMA, Salsa, Aerobic steps, Ballet, Side-steps and so on. Although these movements are not necessary to the play, these help audience to be engaged throughout the play; and it did not become an intervention to destroy the real essence and deliverance of the plot of the play. Also, the music or songs used in the play were familiar to the audience. Thus, these made audience became more interested in the show. They even tried to guess the title of the music. Moreover, the sound of string instrumental is just perfect for the ambiance of the night and to the emotions in the play. Another, the actors portrayed well their characters; they delivered their lines with convictions and proper actions that their audiences were convinced enough. In addition, although the play is based from a foreign play, the director used objects that are related to Filipinos.

           Furthermore, humor is one of the ingredients to the play why it appeared to be engaging and appealing to the audience. According to the research of Peter McGraw regarding to humor, humor is universal. As a matter of fact, it has social benefits for it delivers message in an indirect way to lessen the burden of confrontation with formality. This is an effective way to criticize actions or behaviors avoiding the disadvantages of direct confrontations. Another, comedy has been always used to critic society’s certain behavior towards objects and other situations. Although Aristotle considered comedy as a lower form of art, there are still classic writers of comedy whose works had big contributions to the society for they had delivered messages that successfully helped the present situations of their society in the past. In addition, Aristotle also stated that music is one of the important elements in a play. In relation to the recent play, music has a vital role in increasing the intensity of the emotions in the play.    

           Overall, the play, Ang Barbero ng Laguna offered moral lessons that can be used by the audience in their real lives. It also shows that spontaneity of actors in delivering their lines is important; and putting some humor and objects familiar to your audience are some of the effective strategies to involve your audience in the whole duration of the performance of the play.
