Rightio, finished the first season of Lockwood & Co, so here’s my thoughts.
I really hope this gets a second season because I thoroughly enjoyed this show.
So, disclaimer-ing again, I have never read the books, so I’m speaking as a newbie.
This show ticked all the right boxes, for me. It was well-written, the worldbuilding was comprehensive and believable (in the context of fiction- look, you know what I mean), the CGI was fun (I do love a good ghost effect), and the cast was just fantastic, especially the three main leads.
It does have tropes you usual see in YA fantasy stories, but I’m fine with tropes as long as they’re interesting. And I feel like Lockwood & Co. did those tropes extremely well. Even the ones that I thought would annoy me didn’t last very long because they either got subverted (i.e. Kipps! Very pleasantly surprised with how that rivalry ended!) or there was enough setup to let me give it a pass.
What really made this show work for me was, again, the three main leads. These actors were so engaging and charismatic, and their chemistry was very believable. They were 100% the heart of this show, and it was a pleasure to see them in these roles.
I feel like this was a refreshing take on ghosthunting, especially from the perspective of teenagers. And there was a nice amount of social commentary sprinkled in, too.
So, my final thought is basically circling back to what I said before - I really hope we get another season. Lockwood & Co. is an extremely solid YA fantasy show, and it’d be a real shame to see it go after only one season, while so much utter crap keeps getting renewed.
My rating is 4.5/5 rapiers.
