Harry Styles wrote Carla's song after expericeing his friend Carla listen to Simon and Garfunkel's music for the very first time. It was his introduction to their music - and has said that it was like real like magic watching Carla listen to their music. This very concept is so interesting to me as someone who just introduced Sabrina Carpenter to a friend. This friend already knew a lot of Sabrina's newer sounds however as a longtime 'Brina fan (my 2017 compared to her 2024), I knew she would love Paris. Paris is off of Singular Act I and one of my favorite songs from my early teens. The very experience of hearing music whether it be Paul Simon or Sabrina Carpenter is unique. It can never be perceived by the same person twice. My friend knew that I loved this song even to this day however she didn't realize that this song gave me so much hope as a teenager just as I don't realize how emotionally connected she is to Juno. I love listening to new albums with friends - I have this very tradition with my long distance best friend where we listen to whichever Taylor Swift's over FaceTime. Ever since Midnights all the way to Showgirl, we have been doing this. This other best friend that I showed Paris to I experienced Olivia Rodrigo's newest album with. When we first met, I was seventeen and way too used to play Lacy from Rodrigo's GUTS album because she was my Lacy. Now we get to love and understand Expectations as we both enter our twenties (well as she enters her last year of teens and I head into twenty one) and go to Rodrigo's concert in February.

I'm way late to this conversation but to me the main problem with the comparison of Old Fashioned to The Black Dog is that it completely recontextualizes the age difference mentioned.

The use of "she's too young to know this song" in The Black Dog is like, to illustrate that her ex is seeing girls who are younger than HER, and how that's a slap in the face. In Old Fashioned there are multiple ways to describe how he pursues young women but the point is that she is one of the young women he did this to. It's not about imagining the muse pursuing other people in general, it's about the knowledge that the narrator is only a part of this person's predatory behavior.

The age difference between the muse and the narrator (and the other girls he's done this with) is focal to Old Fashioned. And I think comparing it to The Black Dog COMPLETELY neglects that aspect. They are both about expendability in some way but it is vastly, VASTLY different.
