jane's speech impediment is not "curable." it progresses, it improves, but she will never speak in the same manner that those around her do. it's not a mere matter of social cues, of growing and learning as she spends time in society. her way of speaking is a direct result of her isolated upbringing, ( and growing up exposed to massive bouts of radiation / far too much technology ) combined with extremely traumatic experiences beginning from a very young age. due to these factors, jane suffers from a severe fluency disorder and a type of orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD).

she is not just quiet because of her lack of experience; rather because there is a very real disconnect between her brain and mouth. sentences actually sound near perfect in her brain! if she's having a conversation, her reply in her mind is steady and streamlined, with correct punctuation. but when she moves her mouth, it does not come out in the way she intended. sentences are disjointed, lack the proper grammar, and words may even be in the wrong place, or added where they're not necessary. she can scramble for words in one line of dialogue, hesitating and trying to sound out syllables she can't pronounce. then, in the next line, she may speak without any pauses, only using run on sentences. she lacks the proper skills to grasp the english language. stuttering and cluttering are the two prominent symptoms of a fluency disorder. jane has a tendency to clutter, but some signs of stuttering are present, too.

stuttering:

periods of silence when you're trying to begin a sentence but can't start the sound you want to make.

sounds that are held too long ("i ssss-see what you mean.")

syllables or words that are repetitive ("hand me that b-b-book" or "who-who called?")

cluttering:

have a rate or rhythm of speech that sounds rapid, irregular or jerky.

include excessive interruptions during speech ("um," "uh" and "you know")

make changes to your speech in the middle of sentences ("i would like to go can i go?")

notice "maze patterns" of speech, which take multiple turns to get to the point ("i have to go buy a dress… i'm going out on friday and have nothing to wear… i'm going shopping to buy something for this date i have.")

pause unexpectedly in the middle of sentences ("do you want to… come to the movies?")

"someone with a fluency disorder is also likely to try and cover it up. they might try to avoid certain words that tend to cause stuttering or cluttering, or even cough, clear their throat or yawn to distract from symptoms. they might steer clear of situations where they have to speak. someone is more at risk of a fluency disorder if they have a developmental delay or learning disability."

jane's delayed neuromotor development due to not being properly cared for, being malnourished and abused from a young age is also the cause of the orofacial myofunctional disorder.

"OMDs are movement patterns that involve oral and orofacial musculature, which result in incorrect positioning of the tongue at rest and during swallowing, breathing, and speech production. OMDs can occur across the lifespan and diagnosis of OMDs considers the impact of atypical movement patterns on structural changes and functional skills."

"the movement patterns related to the mouth and face muscles that affect the growth of facial structures, communication, and swallowing. these movement patterns impact daily activities such as breathing, talking, and eating. environmental factors can either help or hinder communication and participation."

jane's motor function/functional skills never had the chance to develop the way they were supposed to. she never reached her full height. her shoulders never broadened to their full extent. her teeth didn't grow properly. she was not exposed to physical activity. her body did not develop at normal paces, and most importantly, her brain was never given the supplements it needed -- not to mention being constantly dosed in radiation. all of these factors combined result in these two disorders. at thirteen she is finally exposed to real conversations, has the chance to speak for herself. but by this time, it is far too late to do anything significant to aid these impediments.

while jane has help from her friends and family, her tutor, her therapist, sam owens -- the resources that would be available today simply weren't there in the 80s. she begins seeing a speech pathologist when she is sixteen, although has to travel outside of hawkins as the hospital and school does not offer the tools required for her needs. ( the basic areas covered are: articulation, language development, fluency, voice and resonance, and cognitive-communication. ) due to her turbulent life, appointments can be missed, and they are not as regularly scheduled as they should be.

her speech does improve, there's no doubt about it, but that severe disconnect between her brain and mouth never really does. she can talk for five long minutes, replying and answering with absolute perfection, only for her following reply to suddenly be jointed, sharp; the words are there in her head but as hard as she tries, she can't release them. the frustration she feels only makes it worse. one of the best examples we see of this in the show is during jane and hopper's big argument. jane knows what she wants to say, knows what the proper words are, yet can’t get them out due to the frustration of the situation, and that mental block. "you say… i go. but i never leave! nothing ever happens!" she points to him, to herself, to her surroundings, trying to explain what she means, but not in so many words. when her point can't be made with mere gestures, she needs to force the words out, strained and confused.

nancy quickly moved a stray piece of hair behind her ear before allowing her eyes to re-focus on the papers in front of her. she enjoyed the tutoring and wanted to make sure jane was doing her absolute best. honestly she fully believed they were, but the determined part of her felt like double checking every line just to be thorough. if someone had looked at her eyes they'd most likely see them both glued to the papers and darting back and forth. every now and then little 'hmms,' 'uh-huhs,' and 'yes' sounds would leave her lips.

about another ten or so minutes eventually passed by, maybe fifteen, before nancy let a smile spread across her lips. "you've made a lot of progress and i think these will do well in your classes," she mused, gathering up the papers in a neat pile. once they were all together she gently slid them across the table to jane. there wasn't much for her to critique anymore and maybe that meant she'd been helpful enough in her tutoring. at least nancy certainly hoped so because she felt proud of what jane had done. it left her feeling gleeful. "if there are any other questions or things to show me, i'd be happy to answer or check those too. unless there's something else going on?"

when the first page of her assignment disappears beneath her tutors attention, the room falls into a familiar kind of eerie silence, because, as always, jane teeters on the edge; every second nancy is focused, absorbed in the passed along information, becomes an opportunity in which something terribly wrong could be uncovered. she braces herself with the resignation of someone who goes through life expecting any accomplishment, big or little, to seldom be enough. "oh." the shock in her tone is genuine; nancy speaks of symbolism and narrative structure like she was born with a dictionary in hand, and janessa can't mute the persistent conviction that each time she stepped into this teacher role, she must immediately recognise every place where education was interrupted, the missing pieces left behind by years that should have been spent in classrooms opposed to laboratories. "really?" the smile starts small, then touches her eyes within seconds; a gleam from ear-to-ear progresses unbelievably quickly. "thank you... i tried."

jane's palm stills mid-air as she shuffles forward, intending to retrieve the papers and return them to the bright pink folder she stored them in — instead, nancy's question cycles in her head like a scratched vinyl stuck on a loop. rather than carrying on, she slumps back slightly in her chair, gaze turning downcast, grin fading fast. "no. no questions. it's..." she sucks in a breath, counts to three, and releases, just like becky taught her. "i... uh… i think i am scared i will never be... good enough. for this." she admits, barely louder than a whisper. nancy is safe, she reminds herself, she wouldn't ask if she didn't want to know. a sudden growth of hesitation latches onto her speech as her hands begin wringing together nervously, "i never did school normally, and — and this," a stiff gesture to her now reviewed essay, "is hard. so hard. i want to be good at it because i want to be normal. but i think it is a lot easier for everybody else."

there's a cold, distant deference in her body language, like she can't be touched in fear of breaking; like she's a gun belonging to a museum, no longer a battlefield, a treasure that used to be useful and today sits as a reminder of bygone glory. a museum of lost causes and derelict duties. because who, what is she without static pumping through her veins? since when did she trade headaches for homework? she shrugs, picks herself up and continues her original intentions by neatly stacking her work away, almost afraid to look nancy in the face. "i want everyone, i want you, to be proud of me." and not because i closed the gate, or because i survived when others were buried. "i don't know." progress has clearly been made, and she should be glad, but it's taken so long to get here. how much more must she endure before she reaches the level where her friends reign? "i don't know if it will come naturally to me. that i will ever be properly smart, like you guys."

the rain came to hawkins with the solemn patience of unresolved grief, turning every street into a wavering mirror and every window into an eye clouded by memory. it rains a lot these days, five years on since the sky and ground finally stitched themselves shut, since the wound dividing worlds was cauterised by a child who gave everything she had to ensure none would ever again see a new realm bleeding through. the town ultimately endured, but that child would not. death, janessa ives has discovered, wasn't always a ravenous beast overshadowing everything in a single second; IN HER CASE, IT'S MORE AKIN TO A PATIENT GARDNER, clipping away one blossom after another until the entire garden forgot how to bloom. the first symptom had been exhaustion, then fevers, then the strange black veins that crawled beneath her flesh like roots searching for soil. there's no way to resist what was happening, to change paths despite how much she'd like to... but it hardly meant she couldn't make the most of her remaining days. it's what took her to nancy wheeler's office with an idea larger than life, an idea of the impact she could leave behind.

when she stepped inside the room, once occupied by her adoptive father, there's no explanation regarding her unexpected visit, merely a small smile and nod of the head to announce her presence. within moments, she's carefully descending into the chair on the opposite side of the desk, and silent still, withdraws a photograph from the pocket of her coat, placing it on the polished wood between them. clearly, she's here for business concerning the man in said photograph, and neither required any assistance in identifying him. she slides it across the table, and at last speaks: "everyone is asking what i wish to do. before i die," she says plainly, like the concept doesn't frighten her beyond measure. "if i want to go somewhere. on a plane. on a boat. see new things." she shuffles forward, fingertips prying at the worn edges. "i think about one thing only." her brows furrow slightly; her face has grown thinner, the elegant sharpness of adulthood unable to conceal the fragile translucence casting across her every move. she looks older than twenty-two. "him. need to know if he is alive. if he is, want to make sure he can't hurt anybody else."

she hadn't made peace with martin brenner. he infiltrates her thoughts with exhausting regularity, not summoned deliberately, but arriving of his own accord in the quiet spaces between conversations, during sleepless hours at dawn; even while sitting with mike on the couch, watching films with endings she can't recall, as her mind wandered elsewhere long before the credits rolled. in every consuming thought, another little girl is forgetting her name while it's replaced with a number. JANESSA CAN'T STAND IT. the ives hadn't survived him, but others would if she had any say in the matter. "i know." she replies, sharper than intended. something inside jane recoils, not because @dontretreat spoke unkindly, but because for one impossible instant, she wants to laugh. EASY. the word feels foreign, obviously belonging to someone else's life. she stares down at brenner on the table, familiar eyes preserved in a sheen of faded gloss, and finds herself wondering whether she had ever, in all the years she remembers, been granted anything warranting such a description.

"nothing is easy. but i can't... i must try." sometimes she'd find a calming pleasure in watching joyce move quietly throughout their home, humming under her breath whilst folding washing or cooking dinner — then eventually envision what her mother might have been like if she'd been spared from the devil in a suit. would terry have laughed often? would she have braided jane's hair after school? maybe she'd scold muddy shoes by the front door, unfinished homework, and ordinary childish mistakes that seemed enormous because nothing truly terrible ever happened. she would never know, for he'd not just stolen time, but possibilities, too. "will you help? you can access... computers, and... and security cameras... documents." tone takes on an edge of desperation now, faint in volume but so very loud in determination. "there must be something. a trace. something."

Mike can't help but let a soft chuckle escape his mouth at her question. "I just took one of my mom's cookbook. It wasn't too hard. I just had to follow what was written." He's way too proud of himself right now, he is whenever his friends eat something he prepared and they like it. But when it comes to Jane, he always wants to make her smile as much as he can, so it makes him even happier.

"You know, we should try to cook something together when you have time." It would be far different from everything they're used to, after the mess that happened in Hawkins. But Jane is free now, they have time for simple things like this.

the house is quiet in a way it had never been during the years when silence led to the expectation of horror. now, it's so very peaceful, that it feels somewhat foreign despite the months passed. the porch light casts an amber glow across the front steps, and beyond the windows, hawkins nearly looks ordinary. the scars remain (rebuilt streets, younger trees planted where older ones had fallen, stories nobody outside the town would fully believe), but life has finally seeped into a gentleness scarcely known, and tonight is the perfect example of that. inside the wheeler's kitchen, the warm scent of roasted onions, garlic, thyme and tomato glaze still lingers in the air. jane can't fathom how mike managed to prepare such a meal; it was beautiful just to look upon, and suddenly, she's grateful she got all dressed up for their shared plans. she'd felt a tad silly when she glanced at herself in the mirror before leaving home, and her reflection showed that of a teenager set for an elegant evening in town rather than a seemingly simple dinner date.

she decided on a deep lilac dress that reaches her wrists and stops in the middle of the knee, crafted by her own hand, a black cardigan once belonging to her mother, and pretty flats she borrowed from nancy; all-in-all her outfit and braided hairstyle mirrored mike's fancy dish quite nicely. she expected frozen pizza, maybe sandwiches, which she'd have been thrilled with, when he invited her. but this? the meatloaf was sliced neatly, revealing a perfectly pink centre, while the creamy mashed potatoes with its melted butter pooled like little golden rivers; jane barely even spoke after it was served, far too consumed with the presentation and taste... it wasn't unlike something revealed inside a restaurant! truly, none bare the ability to make her feel special in the way he does.

by the time she's finished, only a few carrots and a small puddle of gravy resides on her plate. "wow. not hard?" she breathes almost dramatically, like the idea of a home-cooked meal is unheard of. "it looks like it is really hard." she enjoyed baking, but a craft to this calibre is silently daunting; it remains a skill others homed while she watched from nearby. his suggestion is absurd in its raw sweetness; she should know by now that everything is together. never alone again, never left in the dark, always at his side. not him teaching while she observes; not her nervously attempting and him correcting mistakes. together: standing beside one another, reading the same recipe, laughing when things inevitably go wrong. the images of a safely assured future flicker in her mind with astonishing clarity, and with it, follows a warmth that spreads through her chest so abruptly that she can't stop smiling.

"that sounds wonderful." and she means it — these are the moments she's living for, after all! just a girl; a girl with a name, with a family, a life with the boy who meant more than words could ever express, more than actions could ever convey. "can i see your mom's cookbook? we can pick something tonight!"

just thinking about how jane is so morally good, and how love shapes a lot of her decisions. despite everything she's been through, she navigates herself through the world by the love received since first escaping the lab, and the love she's learnt to express towards others, both in words and actions. [it would have been such a foreign concept, but once she starts feeling that affection, it overrides a lot of the bad.] the perfect example can be found in her dynamic with billy hargrove. when he's flayed, when the battle at starcourt is nearing its end, and she's about to be sacrificed by his hand… she saves herself, him, and everyone else through this powerful emotion. an emotion which, three years prior, she had no understanding of. she reminds billy, a boy who has done nothing but harm her friends [she knows everything that happens when he is flayed isn't his fault, but it doesn't excuse his behaviour beforehand] of love that he once knew, of a good time in his life. she even places her hand on his cheek, physically trying to comfort and ground him when she's the one about to die. it speaks volumes on her character.

she's seen the worst of the world through humans and monsters alike, and in that moment she's enduring remarkable horrors once more; yet, to survive, she speaks out, shows her attacker warmth, and reminds him of the last time he felt truly happy. jane tries to give billy something good to hold onto, even as her life is threatened. she tries to comfort and help him. a great extent of her actions revolve around the love she's been given, and she tries to pass it on as much as she can. to whoever she can. because everyone deserves to be happy. [not to mention, it works! she wasn't strong enough to overpower him physically, so she did it emotionally, and saved everyone in the process.] she could have been bitter over the things that were taken from her, she could have been hateful, but it simply is not in her nature. which inevitably draws back to why she could not have stayed with kali - she cannot operate in an environment that is fueled from vengeance and hate - not when being loved is what got her out of that cage she spent twelve years locked inside.

first of all, thank you so much! i put in a lot of time and effort into miss ives, so to see her appreciated is always like a little reward!

secondly! okay. so the way janessa started was literally because i was watching barbie and the 12 dancing princesses (i am a huge fan of the classic barbie films!) and one of the princess' names is janessa and i was like… that kinda rocks! and immediately associated jane to it and thus, janessa was born! so it started purely because of barbie, but evolved when i realised the similarities between jane ives and jane doe, and it just gave me the ick. (to no one's surprise when the duffers are involved!) don't get me wrong, jane is a beautiful name - it's actually my middle name! - but when it's associated to stranger things' jane it just gives the… this girl has no identity, no history, no family— she is a corpse waiting to be identified. and the more i thought about it the more i became really firm about her full name being janessa because it separated her a little from that? but i also love jane and actually use both names in my writing, i alternate between the two! this is probably me overthinking things, as per usual when it comes to lovely jane, but it just makes sense for my specific portrayal. jane ives is a beautiful name, but janessa alexandra ives is who i have created over the years and i just like having that further separation from the fandom!
