headcanon: Hatter used to have a wife. he loved her a lot and so did she. Harry got to meet her and was really happy when he heard they were having a baby (Hattie) unfortunately, months after Hattie was born, Mrs Hatter started feeling really sick, every day getting worse, Hatter was desperate, he didn't know what to do, Harry was trying his best to help his friend, but nothing seemed to help Mrs Hatter get better. Until, the day came, Mrs Hatter had passed away.
Hatter was devastated, he had never felt so bad in his life, he kept lying to Harry saying he was alright, but he wasn't. Hatter stopped making hats and wearing colorful clothes for a while, since he thought there was no point in doing so. Harry couldn't stand seeing him so sad, so, one night, he promised him that whatever happens, he wouldn't leave his side, ever.
This somehow made Hatter feel a little better, "besides, Hattie wouldn't want his father to be sad."
Eventually, Hatter became his cheerful and silly self again, and Harry was happy about this. Every day, he would come early in the morning to the Hatter's house to have tea parties with him, so that he wouldn't feel lonely.
Hatter tries to avoid thinking about his deceased wife, because he knows he'll get all gloomy and stuff, and he doesn't want Hattie to worry about him.
Hattie, on the other hand, doesn't really care about his mother, since well... he didn't know her at all, and Hatter won't talk about her. He's happy he at least has a dad as great as Dad Hatter.
He'll always be thankful for everything Harry has done/does for him.
