I just think for every show or movie that queerbaits or is just generally lacking in queer rep there should be a corresponding travelling stage play that turns the gay up to 11. It will be well written, performed, and staged. It's also affordable and easy to travel to.

I don't think that's too much to ask for.

I once saw the gayest version of Jesus Christ Superstar where it really seemed like Judas had cheated on his boyfriend Jesus with Bear Pontius Pilate and Mary Magdalene was trying to get them back together. Or is that the normal version? Idk. It was a black box version I saw in an alleyway (not literally in the alley, but the door to the venue was down an alleyway) a couple of cities over. Tickets were $20. Parking was ass. 10/10 would watch again. I was invited and know nothing more about it.

I love being on Tumblr because now I have OTPs for fandoms I'm not even in.

The gif makers, the artists, the writers...I've never seen that show and don't really want to watch it but damn, ok. I support your ship for we are all at sea. I'm the deckhand and you're the captain, I get it. Godspeed and good luck.

Also, have tried to find time to write more fanfic and original stuff but have not managed yet outside of a few poems here and there. Hopefully by the middle of June things will have calmed down and I can do something creative again.

What is it called when the narrative has the "gorgeous" character be extremely down bad for the "plain" character? What is the term for that if there is one?

you get a comment on tumblr. it's a bot trying to scam you. you get a DM. it's a bot trying to scam you. you get a message on instagram. its a bot trying to scam you. you're an author and you get an email telling you how much they loved your book and want to showcase it at their bookclub. it's a bot trying to scam you (and it uses bad AI to pretend it knows your story). you get a comment on ao3 saying how much they love your fic - and they made you fanart!! it's a bot trying to scam you. you get a hate comment on ao3 which insults your writing or calls you a monster for writing something "problematic". it's a bot. but at least that one isn't trying to scam you.

there's just something really cruel and insidious about this wave of scams going after creatives. You get an email and think someone genuinely loved what you made but - no. It's another scam. It's someone trying to trick you into sending them money. On AO3, it might literally just be a bot someone made specifically to be a hateful little shit.

putting the stuff you've made out there for everyone to see is hard and scary and we're all just bumping around looking for a bit of appreciation and love and connection and these bastards are using that to try to rob us. I hate it.

Sequels, second seasons, reboots...they're all as canon as you want them to be. For that matter, canon is only as canon as you want it to be. If you create fan works, including head canons, for a piece of media, that's just as important as the actual canon media.

Because fiction isn't reality.

Fiction isn't history.

That's not to say that fiction doesn't matter, it does. Professional fictional media is a tangible representation of society and humanity done for profit, to profit off of the very society it is trying to represent. Which, if done poorly, is absolutely deserving of critique.

Fanmedia, in direct contrast, is not done for profit or to reach a large audience, it's a hobby.

To criticize and be disrespectful of a free fanmedia is to basically be critical of your friend's art they do for fun.

If you wouldn't say something to your friend about their drawing or story, you shouldn't say it to a creator of fanmedia.

If you would say something negative to your friend, without them asking for your input, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you need to examine your own biases and sense of entitlement.

I believe that the commodification of content, of influencers and micro-celebrities, has added this belief that if it's on the internet it's fair game for ridicule and harassment, which could not be farther from the truth.

Unless the media is done for profit it is NOT to be criticized without permission from the creator.

There is no reward for creating fanmedia except for a sense of community and friendship. And when you are negative, harassing, bitter, and critical, you kill the community. You're entitled to nothing you did not pay for. You are not entitled to free fanmedia. You are not entitled to the labour of love that is creating something simply for the joy of sharing.

And for that matter, fanmedia creators who create and worry about the numbers and the "reach": you're encouraging the people who feel entitled to be disrespectful. You are one of the problems, and I'm sorry, I know you are probably looking for that validation of community, but that is not the way to get it. I don't want to discourage you from creating, but I do want to discourage you from the stress. You will not get rich or famous or successful from creating fanmedia. You are stressing yourself out over imaginary numbers for an imaginary job that you don't have. Please be kinder to yourself.
