I grew up in central Appalachia before and after Columbine and, if you're not aware, Appalachia moves slowly when it comes to change.
When I graduated high school in 2005, students were allowed to keep hunting rifles and shotguns in their vehicles on school property (hunting season). We were allowed to carry pocket knives on school grounds and to class. We were all required to take a class to get our hunting and fishing license. Most had been taught how to handle a firearm since they were in diapers.
Here's the other thing though. I never felt unsafe at school. Fights were few and usually over quickly. Bullying occurred but not like it does today, usually people just kept to themselves and the internet wasn't in your pocket. No one committed suicide. Drugs were just weed, cigarettes and getting drunk in a field. I think the worst thing that happened was an ATV accident (story under cut).
Things have changed a lot since then. I'm not saying it was better or worse. Just different.
Real and growing possibility of him dying live on tv and nobody in the room noticing for minutes on end.
Likes charge, reblogs cast.
Every time people complain about Windows, Apple or Google adding AI to their computers I just look over at my little but powerful Linux machine and celebrate.
My computer can do everything I ask of it easily. And, as always, through Steam and Proton, all things are possible. Triple A to small indie games.
My computer hardware was expensive (32gb ram, 1tb ssd+5tb hdd, etc). The software was free. She's the queen of the Frankenstein castle and I love her.
I recently purchased a new hdd (6tb! 12tb total!) to add to her roster. I need to get around to installing it. Alas, with new games being 150-200gbs each, or more, I need the room.
I do think it's helpful to remember that most of the USA is way hotter than Europe and that's part of why we like big bevvy so much. We aren't just hedonists, we're also too fucking hot!!
It's 32°C/90°F where I am today. I do not live in one of the very hot places, it is considered a temperate area. It's a bit warm but not uncomfortably so as it is not overly dry or wet, the humidity is around 35%. It's quite lovely out, actually.
I have traveled to the hot desert regions of the US and to the wet and hot regions and both are miserable. The desert is fever hot and the wet hot is so wet it feels like you're choking if you're not used to it. Both are unpleasant until you get acclimated.
As long as the humidity stays between 30-60% I'm usually fine with the heat.
But yes, staying hydrated in the heat is a priority for a vast amount of US Americans. Large beverages help us with staying hydrated, it can be water or soda or something else, electrolytes need to be replaced due to loss from sweating.
We do lose people to heat related health conditions every summer. I don't know the statistics but how to treat over heating and heat stroke is a part of the emergency preparation and first aid training I have received.
There are emergency cooling shelters in the city near me every year from June to September to give people a place to cool off if the electricity or AC goes out or if they are homeless/unhoused.
AND it's hurricane season! So there may be one or more large, very damaging storms near me very soon. We seem to have skipped the tornados this year, somehow, and the wildfires have been mostly contained. No earthquakes or floods near me either, so far. Usually we get at least one natural disaster every three to six months or so. Not usually severe enough to impact much of anything, thankfully. This past winter was harsh however and I had to repair my house from the snow as it ripped my gutters down.
I've lived through a bunch of natural disasters so it's old hat now. I've accepted that I may die due to mother nature's wrath if I'm not prepared so I stay prepared as best I can.
I feel like I become a more educated person every time someone with more knowledge and/or a special interest in something tells me, in depth, about it.
I love learning things. Please share your educational or interesting passions with me.
Some of you have never heard the term “snake oil”, and need to know that most things online that an influencer is trying to sell you is snake oil.
That 🫵 is snake oil, dude.😐
We need to start treating mental illnesses like the neurological health conditions they are.
do you want to play tomodachi life but don't have a switch, $60, or just don't want to pay nintendo $60?
here's an all-in-one site where you can download everything you need to emulate it!
Floralith beta — downloads and setup.
also, with an emulator, you can directly screenshot and record your game, and even mod it! add custom hair parts! import photos directly! remove region locks! emulate it!!
edit: the creator of the site, @blorblegoop, has created their own post about it, explaining who they are, addressing security concerns, and helping out with some common problems from the notes! please see their post if you have any further questions :)
everything?
everything! this site will walk you through downloading the ryujinx switch emulator, the firmware and keys needed, and the nsp game file for tomodachi life ltd.
is this safe?
the files are all directly downloaded from this site, so there's no third party to worry about. i didn't make this site - it was created by @blorblegoop , who recently contacted me with this post on their blog addressing security concerns. they scan all the files themself before hosting. i scanned my own pc after downloading as well, and it all came up clean! but it’s good to be aware of pc safety, especially when pirating. it can’t hurt to do your own scan to be sure!
how much pc knowledge do i need for this?
you should know how to download files, how to make and manage folders in file explorer, and how to navigate a program's settings menu.
any settings i should change in ryujinx?
here's some i recommend checking before starting the game:
this morning, the creator of floralith.xyz, @blorblegoop, dmed me with a post they had just made, going into detail about the site, its security, and addressing some common issues people in the notes have had. please check out their post here, and spread this version so everyone is more well informed!

The iron hook slid free from his shoulder with a wet metallic shriek. Something black and arterial splashed across the stones between them.
The torturer stepped back instinctively. Not out of mercy. Out of surprise. The prisoner laughed. Not loudly. Worse than loudly. Softly. Like he had just remembered a private joke older than civilization.
“You still think pain is a language,” he said.
Another blow. This time across the mouth. Teeth cracked. Blood sheeted down his chin in long ribbons.
The interrogator hissed through clenched teeth. “Tell me where God went.”
The prisoner turned his head slowly. There was blood in his smile now.
“There are organisms,” he said, “living beneath Antarctic ice that have never seen the sun and have still learned how to eat.”
The room had gone very still. Somewhere in the dark, machinery groaned.
The interrogator grabbed him by the jaw hard enough to bruise bone.
“You think this makes you immortal?”
The prisoner spat a clot of red onto the floor between them.
“No,” he whispered.
“I think it makes you temporary.”
The torches flickered.
For one impossible second, the interrogator became aware of his own pulse. The heat in his veins. The soft wetness of his eyes. The damp animal electricity inside every living thing. The prisoner watched realization bloom across his face and smiled wider, blood running between his teeth.
“You cannot threaten a creature from the dirt,” he said, “with returning to the dirt.”

#ok well aside of the dialogue i think its good#“not loudly. worse than loudly. softly” is very very good im sorry to say#either you failed op or i have bad taste#maybe both
Honestly... Perhaps what's going on here is that at no point are we discussing "What makes writing good".
This piece was emotionally powerful.
The mix of dialog and scenery helped pull me in.
The metaphors were unusual and yet fullly parsable. hell, I could feel the *threat* from the prisoner's description of the creatures in the artic ice.
The emotional crisis from the interrogator felt.
And through all this, we are left with a sense of being foreign to the scene, despite being able to fully understand it. We're invited in to both perspectives - the perspective of the interrogator who must face an emotional reality he was wholey unprepared for, and the perspective of a prisoner who has accepted and welcomes what to come. Who has clearly delt with and is prepared to deal with hardships and GAH!!!
Okay enough jushing, I had a point -
This writing feels "Good" because it is "Emotionally effective" If writing is about communicating, then this piece is powerful because it certainly communicates!
One might argue it's not "good" in an accademic sense. But honestly? TO HELL WITH THAT!
Acadamia exists to help us understand what is, and how we might use it. It does not get to make the determination for us what is good or bad. If we are brought along with the piece, and get to be brought into the experience, does that not make the piece worthwhile? Does that not mean that, if a piece appears bad in an academic sence, that it is the academics who have missed something?
This fake exceprt captured so much in the short amount of time it had with us. Sure, there are rough parts, but even the rough parts contribute towards delivering the scene's setting, stakes and message!
Honestly, if there is any failing in this piece, it's that it failed to impart the message the author was attempting to capture because it was being too good at emulating the works that it was inspired by. The author must have understood, on a subconcous level if not the councous level, what it is that drives a piece to capture the attention of Tumblr users, and they captured that well. In doing so, they ironically undermined their own goals of highlighting the issues with this kind of writing.
Ok I'm gonna reply with the discussion I had with friends about this piece because they put it in words better than I can. Yes writing doesn't have to be academically good and you don't need to be a good writer but I think you're limiting yourself by not analyzing why a piece feels "off" for someone else when it's fine for you
Also there is an annoying amount of . where there should be commas and its pissing me off but thats a nitpick
Good and bad do not exist. Everything is grey.
Art is subjective, not objective. Trying to quantify it is pedantic. Art is only ever "Not to your taste".
I don't like Stephen King novels but they're best sellers. There are famous paintings I'd never hang on my wall. I prefer coffee to tea but that doesn't make tea "bad". Every pokemon is someone's favorite. I'm a cat person but I still love my dog.
Define yourself by what you love and you'll live a happier life.
That being said, the op original was not to my taste.
me: yeah, so one of your most famous works is actually just that commission of a woman that you kept. Honestly, it's less of the piece itself that lead to its fame and more the mystery surrounding it, so I was hoping you could clear that up the decayed corpse of Leonardo Da Vinci that I resurrected: Hai detto che hanno chiamato una tartaruga che combatte il crimine con il mio nome?
I'm cleaning a bunch of white tail deer bones that washed up out of the lake.
I know how to clean bones so they're display ready and clean. I don't know how to display them.
I'm not interested in selling them either (sorry vultures) but if anyone has an idea of what I can do with them? I'm open to hearing it.
It's the lower part of the spine, a loose vertebrae, some ribs, a scapula, and some small miscellaneous pieces. No skull or antlers.
I'm not an artist, I do this because nature is scientifically fascinating and I'm still going through my whimsical goth phase 25 years later (I'm almost 39). So displaying them instead of just leaving them in boxes would be great.
I'm pretty handy and have a lot of tools so no worries there.
Please give me your opinions, fellow bone collectors!
I decided to play a bit of fallout 4 and I was reminded that fallout 4 is basically two different games that happen to overlap sometimes.
There’s a typical Bethesda open world experience with plenty of quests, janky writing, weird characters, and environmental storytelling,
And then there’s irradiated farm simulator.
