you’ve gotta stat romanticizing your life. you gotta start believing that your morning commute is cute and fun, that every cup of coffee is the best you’ve ever had, that even the smallest and most mundane things are exciting and new. you have to, because that’s when you start truly living. that’s when you look forward to every day.

More Tumblr?
I may just have rediscovered the joy of using Tumblr while hunting a 3d model of meme man.
Automattic
I like the company, I like their style, I like that they, a complete underdog in the business, bought a company that was once super expensive for really cheap and want to fix it up. It’s like Rich Rebuilds spontaneously, not knowing what he’d get into, buying 2 flooded Teslas for relatively little money and turning it into one functioning one.
It reminds me of the story of flickr and smugmug. It feels a lot like the right guys are at the steering wheel again, not a heartless corporation with a pure profit motive.
Porn ban
This once annoyed me a lot and still does a bit. Tumblr was one of the only places in which erotic and non-erotic content could live side by side as things to be enjoyed.
I am beginning to see good reasons for it, however. There may have been a dominance of porn on the platform that threatened to push out other content (although I am not entirely sure, it did seem all fine a few years before the ban).
Another obvious reason for the ban is muh think of the children, but my agreement is ... limited.
Positivity
I like to surround myself with things and people that are nice, but it’s not always that easy for me. It’s nice to have a place for that.
I tend to collect things that I like to create such a place, but sometimes it feels like an unhealthy need to hoard. Maybe being on here will help with that, as I get past a scarcity mind set.
I also really like to share things that I like, which should be relatively nice and frictionless on here. It seems like a decent alternative to constantly annoying the same bunch of people that often enough doesn’t seem to quite understand me.
It’s also a really nice idea for me to exchange tumblr profiles as a “hey, these are things I like“, to get to know someone.
Embarassing posts, old and new
Looking through old posts I’m a bit embarassed by some, which is why I stopped after a few pages. I considered starting a new blog, but find it a but cooler to keep the history around.
Additionally I hope that I will not be too afraid to share things I think I might be embarrassed of in the future (something I do in other places, as I am mighty scared of the permanence of things on the internet and things coming back to me some how, some day, thanks, good early online education). What eases my mind a bit is that I think I never mentioned any directly identifying information here (but who knows?).
Blog themes
There are still so many annoying as fuck blog themes by people who want to be cute. It’s good that tumblr has moved post interaction elements from the theme to a top bar.
Annoyance of exotic/broken/slow themes aside: I really like that Tumblr allows people to use their own code. In the current time that’s just amazing. But I just wish there was a quick way to disable them - switching to/using the archive is a tad annoying as well.

Entering Phase Three
System76 developed a little like this…
Phase one
Drink beer and talk about open source. Start a company making Linux computers. Find out if anyone cares. Lo and behold, people want Linux computers! Struggle, struggle, struggle. Struggle, struggle. Eight years later, persevere!
Phase two
Who are we!? We have principles. Does our brand portray our principles? Not very well. Let’s fix that. Re-brand and define ourselves clearly. “We make powerful computers to help you do more, go further, and unleash your potential.”
Up to this point we’ve developed every capability, capital wise, that an organically grown hardware company can. We can make careful and deliberate choices about hardware and our product line. We can customize all parts of the software stack from the firmware level to the Ubuntu experience. We can deliver bleeding edge hardware and guarantee System76 computers will work with future Ubuntu releases.
Today, we can’t design and manufacture our products. We outsource this work. It’s similar to how Tesla used a Lotus chassis for their first car. (Like their Roadster, the outside of our computers might look similar to others but it’s the inside that counts.) The strategy was cash efficient and allowed us to focus on developing high value areas of the company. However, knowing what we wanted to build but without the means to do so left us constantly yearning for more.
Phase three (today)
Phase three moves product design and manufacturing in house. We’re about to build the Model S of computers. Something so brilliant and beautiful that reviewers will have to add an 11 to their scores. Being that we’re System76 and we do things the System76 way, our design principles are polar opposite of the rest of the industry.
Represent the character of our company
Our company is open, warm, friendly, and high-quality. Our designs reflect these characteristics.
Represent the Open Source community
Our CAD work will be Open Source and our design will pay tribute to computer science.
Easy to work on and expand
At every step along the way we ask, “How does this decision affect serviceability”. Open it, change it, expand it. Our product will be flexible.
Efficient to manufacture
Robots and automation! Manufacturing efficiency will keep prices competitive. And like software development, our manufacturing will continuously integrate product design improvements into production.
We’re starting with desktops. There’s a lot to learn and the form factor is easiest to work with. Both design and CAD work are well along their way. We’re prototyping with acrylic and moving to metal soon. Our first in-house designed and manufactured desktops will ship next year. Laptops are more complex and will follow much later.
It’s going to take some years, but by the end of phase three, we’ll be able to create anything. We’ll apply our unique computers for creators perspective to every aspect of our products.
> We’re about to build the Model S of computers
oh boy
I know laptops will be later but hell, this will be amazing and what Bryan said sounds insane. I just want pictures!
