rereading i love amy and noticing how in chapter 12, amy saying no to bibi fills bibi’s affection cookie jar even more

it’s made clear from the beginning that bibi never truly gets told no. she comes from a wealthy family where she has everything she could want, refusing to take no for a real answer. it’s how she copes with her own familial and mental issues, forcing everything she loves to stay and obey

she gets told yes to all her fantastical and material desires, but not the things she truly needs and wants. her desire to fill a void results in self-entitlement. she never gets what she truly needs: human connection and understanding.

instead, she’s half heartedly scolded and treated like a zoo animal. a “crazy bitch”, a bundle of cells that remains as a constant source of oddities in the surrounding environment. she mostly goes around ignoring these people, but when it comes to amy, it’s different.

by all accounts, amy is an anomaly in bibi’s world. she starts as an obstacle, but contrary to bibi’s expectations, her headstrong personality doesn’t shake her much. while overwhelmed, amy views her as an equal.

not an exhibit, not a monster, a friend. a classmate.

even at the opportunity of a date with her obsession, she realizes just how much she needs amy. the first person in the whole school to not care at all about the rumors, to squash all her expectations and fears.

to be someone who doesn’t adjust their world to orbit only around bibi while in her presence; someone so selfishly selfless that they don’t care about bibi’s eccentricities.

someone, bibi realizes, who genuinely doesn’t judge her.

however, she still views amy as someone who will take whatever’s given to her without complaint. less of an anomaly, more of an archetype. something new to bibi, but just as easy to read now that she “gets it”.

but again, her expectations are shattered by amy doing the unexpected, telling her no.

she’s drawn in by her own reflection in amy’s eyes, the prospect of (as she’s used to) something that gives and lets her take. amy’s kind, timid, giving, apologetic, and a lesbian to boot; all signs point to bibi getting what she “wants”, that sense of normalcy and control she’s always had. she has convinced herself that’s what keeps her content

but again, her caricature is completely shattered. brought back down to earth, she sees amy for the human she is; something entirely unstable and unpredictable in her life. it’s terrifying to her, but seeing amy unwavering in her autonomy despite the “flaw” in her code (as far as bibi is concerned) is terrifying. it shakes her to her core, to see someone so unapologetically… sentient and complex.

someone who says no despite their kindness, someone who doesn’t obey her stringent standards regarding the characters others embody in her mind. there is no box in bibi’s mind that amy fits in anymore, and this hurts her as much as it terrifies her.

how can someone so kind say no? she thinks this not because she’s angry, but because it’s something she has never encountered before. it makes her question what she knows about people despite all her time observing them from afar and making deductions.

and despite all this turmoil in her head, it makes her love amy even more.

As someone who's both been furious at this phenomenon AND been a Dottore fan (mainly because there's a lot of trans symbolism surrounding that character and I headcanon her as a closeted trans woman), I can't count on one hand how many spaces I"ve felt excluded from due to my headcanon.

Certain subreddits *cough* are cesspools of misogyny who 1) hate anyone who acknowledges Dottore's actual crimes, which I do, she may be hot but she's done a lot of things that are unforgivably bad, and 2) openly state that "making Dottore a woman would be a fate worse than killing [her]" despite her having created the male representations of her own stagnant self-loathing in an office decked out in blue, pink, and white.

Someone even went on the leak subreddit and started posting fake leaks where they summed up all the women as this ridiculously stupid archetype of "the Traveler heals their hearts with the power of love and then they do whatever he says forever!!!" completely ignoring the fact that??? That's literally not something that's EVER happened??? And also LUMINE EXISTS TOO YOU LESBOPHOBIC COWARDS???????

Recently, I've been genuinely considering deleting all of my socials and leaving this fandom's online side for good because i've convinced exactly one IRL of my Dottore headcanon, and that IRL doesn't spew misogynistic sludge in my comments whenever I mention that I like Columbina or Sandrone in addition to her, or I'm looking forward to Danica and the Vodyanitsa just as much as I'm looking forward to Noy and Alyosha.

non-misogynistic dottore fans are so so hard to come by so it really means the world to me that fans like you exist:) i love dottore as a villain, she’s very good at making me angry but i feel like a certain crowd refuses to critique her because she’s a male character.

totally not me saying she’s poorly written, but i find more people blaming bina, the tri-lunar goddess, for beating dottore with the “power of friendship” than hoyo for kind of flanderizing dottore.

i noticed that what they did with her is turn her ego up to the point she made critical mistakes that seemed out of character.

for example, her deciding to try and kill traveler first despite sandrone being (to her belief) the one carrying the formula within her felt pettier than what was previously shown. she has always been someone who prioritized experiments and their results, striving ultimately to push boundaries and research even the most taboo of subjects no matter how unethical,, because that was what interested her.

she had an ego, of course, but it’s rare she’d allow anomalies to exist no matter her confidence on a project. she would’ve calculated, logically, that she should make sure to completely destroy pulonia and snuff out sandrone’s life imminently; as these factors could totally botch the experiment if gone unaccounted for.

she already knew sandrone wasn’t as self-centered as she acts, had pointed it out earlier in that quest too, so someone like her would naturally assume that sandrone was feeling right as rain (sorry) about sacrificing herself; especially considering how much she cares (👀) about bina.

why wouldn’t she have known sandrone popping up was a calculated move intended to trick her? she should’ve immediately nuked sandy and pulonia (saying this as a sandrone stan, im just talking about logical deduction lol) rather than erroneously aiming for the traveler first out of… spite? bitterness? the traveler messing up her experiments?

even in truth amongst the pages of purana, her infecting of the ley lines+irminsul was framed as a plan B rather than the whole plan, kind of serving to lobotomize her just a bit more. they unironically made her so smart and powerful that they wrote themselves into a wall by the end of nod krai. the plan should’ve been trickier, a more complicated fakeout, but with how ultimately simple it is it fell a bit flat to me. she’s prideful, egotistical, confident, arrogant, sure; but her main goal was always her research!!

but the only characters demeaned and reduced for “retcons” and flanderization are female ones. how interesting.
