Put on your posing strap—it’s Bob Mizer’s birthday!

Bob came out as a teen in the 1930s and went on to found the first gay magazine in the US, Physique Pictorial, in 1951, photographing over 10,000 men. Many would stay at his LA compound next to his mother’s house and wear the posing straps she sewed for them.

Bob was constantly surveilled by the LAPD, who took aerial photos of his compound from helicopters to verify suspicions he kept twinks in cages.

He went to prison for distributing “obscene material” in 1947 and was found guilty of selling “indecent literature” and “scenes of brutality and torture” in 1954 for his wrestling photos and frat hazing scenes.
