It took Lance way longer than it should have to notice how bad it had really gotten. though it wasn’t entirely his fault, after all, he was always sore in one way or another nowadays. sore from training, sore from the latest mission or skirmish, sore from a late, sleepless night spent walking or running the corridors of the Castle because the latest batch of near disasters and too close moments weighed on him and haunted his dreams.

He barely noticed when the pain stopped going away entirely; when hot baths and long naps and a dose of the one kind of alien painkillers they deemed safe would only reduce it to a dull persistent soreness, muted but omnipresent. Lance shrugged it off as a result of the increased action Team Voltron was seeing. Of course he was sore, he barely had time to relax these days. So he sucked it up, snuck more painkillers from the med bay, and kept going. The war and the Galra weren’t going to stop because his legs were sore, so he couldn’t stop either, because if he stopped, then his team would be slowed down, and that was just something the universe couldn’t afford. No amount of pain, even when he was fresh out of the healing pod, was going to change that.

Lance has been studying under Royal Sorcerer Coran for months, and honestly, seeing Prince Shiro, even just for a minute, is the highlight of his day, every time. He’s the adopted brother to Princess Allura, and he’s due to marry some princess from some kingdom Lance has never heard of. Prince Shiro can’t help but be charmed by this ridiculous wizard, and Allura is plotting to cancel one wedding and possibly set up another…

It’s finished! It’s 26,236 words, and let me tell you it definitely got out of hand, I was planning on a much shorter piece but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I had a lot of fun with it, though! If you’re interested in mermaids and some good angst mixed with piles of fluff, check it out! 

Lance watched the surface grow farther and farther away, bubbles rising all round, spiraling toward the sky. The waves pulled at his hair to surround his face, strands tickling his lips and freckles. His heartbeat pounded loud in his ears. His heart pulled him down. His fingertips pulled him down. His inadequacy pulled him down. He was drowning in it all.

Then- a flash to his right. Something grey and sleek. Lance righted himself, terror taking hold of his body for two infinite seconds. Prey, his subconscious whispered to him. To whatever this creature is, you are prey.

Lance is insecure and loves the water. Shiro is a carnivorous merman who probably wants to eat him. They meet, and bond.

Fic Summary: For as long as he could remember, Lance had dreamed of water. His dreams felt more real than his waking life, a world swathed in shades of blue and green. And that was when he’d met him, the man from the sea who would change his life forever.

Here we have it, my gift for @Jupitertriton (it won’t let me properly tag you?) for the @shancesecretsanta ! I hope this meets what you were looking for in asking for a Mer!AU. I have to admit seeing The Shape Of Water the other day definitely influenced this a bit haha. Happy Holidays!

When he’d brought the strange fish… person… thing home, netting tangled around its limbs, Lance hadn’t even been sure if it was entirely alive then, much less if it would make it through the night. He’d found the creature tangled up in netting caught around the piers of the boardwalk when he was coming back in from night surfing. He’d gotten Hunk’s help in getting the creature home, filled the tub with water, and dumped in most of his supply of the salt and marine stress coat for his aquarium before maneuvering the creature into the tub. When he’d seen its gills flutter, chest rising and falling with a deep breath as soon as it was in the water, he’d breathed a sigh of relief.

Carefully, Lance had spent hours cutting away the netting tangled and twisted around the creature. Whenever he would pull away a piece of netting embedded too deeply in its flesh, the creature would utter an uncomfortable trill, clicking and clacking with displeasure. It sounded alien, the sounds unlike anything he’d ever heard. Lance had shushed it quietly each time, offering soothing strokes to undamaged flesh until the creature calmed down again.

It was only after a few hours of careful snipping and tugging that he had really been able to see what he was working with. And it was… beautiful.

Just an update: We are working on pinch hits now. There are about 5 people who did not respond to our messages. The rest are either submitting late or dropping out, which is fine. We’re giving those who we emailed and messaged on tumblr till tonight to respond or we’re getting pinch hitters in their place.

If you are interested in being a pinch hitter and can write or draw quickly, please message @noir-wing. Taking into consideration that December 31st is New Years, pinch hits will probably be extended till January 5th, so that gives a week’s worth of time that are probably still holidays for many of us.
