Celebrating over 25 years of one of VOLTRON's first fan sites, including the stories behind the stories, which included fiction and a starmap. SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - "The Rebellious Women of 1985"

What I am sharing is a first-time realization.

1985 is an interesting year in animation when it comes to women in rebellion against evil empires.

I just realized that HE-MAN AND SHE-RA: THE SECRET OF THE SWORD came out in March of 1985, with the SHE-RA series coming out in the Fall. In that same year, VOLTRON does an episode with heavy focus on a female leader - and by heavy focus, if you look at it, she gets a lot of screen time without the Voltron Force.

Seriously, count how many minutes she's in this episode. Even though the character change arc is Joran's, we see a lot of Omnia and even know more about her backstory than Joran's.

Except that we know it wasn't, it also feels like a "backdoor pilot" to something else. Omnia not showing up again also seems to contribute to this.

If history had been different, wouldn't it have been wild to have a female leader going to another planet that needs the rebellion brought to it that has connections to someone like Omnia who has such a belief in the Voltron Force that she goes "fangirl" on meeting them that it could become a female skewing "sister series" with cameos from VOLTRON characters about fighting the battle on the ground... much like SHE-RA was versus HE-MAN?

In hindsight, we know VOLTRON had female viewership. Something like this might have worked in an environment ready to embrace SHE-RA.

It's not the way things went, but we can always wonder.

Just like we keep wondering... where did you really go, Omnia?

After a REALLY long break, here is the second half of the Miror return story. It was a one part episode, but we just had a really long prose writeup for it because of the full song lyrics. It's a basic go out and get the robeast with White Lion in the mix story. Just a way to bring Miror back and raise the stakes for character interaction.

Here we get the rest of the actual story. If you're curious, Mt. Alfor and Alfordell aren't canonical. The village near where Nanny is from is at Crown Mountain.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - NINA SEASON 2 EPISODE 3 "The Return of Miror" (Part 1 of 2)

This episode features a complete storyline, the re-introduction of an important character from Nina Season 1, the introduction of a new alliance for the Doom forces along with a key character, and the only case I know of where a piece of VOLTRON fiction includes song lyrics (at the very least, I'd be willing to stake it might be first one, if there are others).

The re-introduction of a character is Miror, who is named in the title. In our works, the closest comparison of the role he was meant to fill was Cossak, but fortunately they are a lot less overlapping than Merla and Lotaria turned out to be. As the episode after this will show (mild spoiler) we were able to set them up in more of a rivalry.

In a scene somewhat similar to the exchange between King Zarkon and King Kova in "My Brother is a Robeast" in the series, we find King Zarkon talking to the King of a planet called Shelon, which is important for (SPOILERS!). He offers his greatest pilot, Xenos.

I do have a concept drawing for Xenos, that I never finished coloring. Here it is.

Now, we shift to planet Arus. Wally Fitz (the musician introduced in Nina Season 1) is on tour again, and he is supposed to be arriving for the concert. The dialogue alludes to how in this continuity the space explorers originally met at a Wally Fitz concert at the Academy. Nina knows him from encountering him before she ever joined with the Voltron Force. As she began to doubt her place with the forces of Doom, she had managed to run away with Wally's band for a while and hid out as part of them until Haggar dragged her back. Nanny's niece Starla was his drummer (introduced in Nina Season 1), who comes to live on Arus when Wally disbanded his group in Season 1 to join the Army for the final Season 1 offensive. This draft presumes that you already know that, and it really needed a rewrite to clarify that for newer audiences.

However, Wally isn't here yet. It's actually Nina singing this song with Starla playing drums. It's one of the ones she knows from her period traveling with the band. Though honestly I have no idea how they managed that without a guitar at least to round them out, looking back.

Which now makes me realize that Nina just beat Pidge as DJ Prong in VOLTRON FORCE by over 25 years as Lion Force Pilot and Pro Musician.

Dang.

Obviously some of this stuff was just meant to happen along the way, in some form, somewhere in the VOLTRON mythos. It just sat around in the ether and took longer to surface.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - NINA SEASON 2 EPISODES 1 AND 2 "Double Nightmare"

If you have followed along from the Nina Season 1 content, you will be aware that a problem presented itself. When we came up with the Nina stories, we had not originally seen the 2 part episode about Coran's wife and son, which we did not catch until reruns. Which it is very likely Nina and none of this would have existed in the first place, because Nina and the White Lion as concepts would have been hard - if not impossible - to work into what was presented.

So, when we did learn of it (long after we had sent the first version of Nina and the White Lion), we struggled to retcon it. If you have seen the "Flight of the White Lion" pieces, you can see where those got stuck at.

"Double Nightmare" is the next step in trying to resolve this mess. I can't remember if we ever developed the monster for this storyline, but the I know what the character line was here. NIna's mother Valda survived the battle of Zohar but had to fake her own death, but because Nina had become unaccounted for didn't reveal herself. Now that Nina is publicly well-known, she was to appear again. Coran thinks he will get a second chance.

Meanwhile, Nina's trying to make her father happy. She's been let in on about the true whereabouts of Leda and Garrett (who will be known as Rhett going forward despite the screenshot since Garrett is also Hunk's last name in the Devil Due comics for reasons I will never understand) by her husband Lance, who doesn't want her to misstep in front of her father in asking about them or anything. Nina (as Mrs. Brewer, not McClain, as that canon last name won't come until Devi's Due - we "Tuckerized" Lance's surname after original head writer Jameson Brewer) goes to the Oolonam to try to find a way to bring Leda and Rhett back from Elsu - and they succeed. I believe Nina was going to be able to tap into things she learned living on Tymancia (see Season 1 for more on this). Fun fact - we misheard the Oolonam's name (probably his title actually) as "Runan" which will be what you see in the notes. I just reconcile it that Runan is his name and the other his title as he says he is called that.

Rhett coming back becomes important, and while I usually don't spoil where things are going, I will in this case because the notes are so fractured. The other issue we had is that Merla (canon) and Lotaria (Lotor's twin sister, created by Lesley) became near duplicates of one another. We paired Rhett with Lotaria, as the two have no preconceived notions of one another, and in so doing became the counterpoint to the dark relationship we had seen with Lotor and Allura.

What follows is what little of "Double Nightmare" was recorded before we stopped in March 1986 upon hearing from Marc Handler.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - The Tone Differences Between Nina Season 1 and Season 2

I am putting this out there in advance. As I am going through the episodes in the form they are, I am finding out they are very rough and raw - as in some topics would have never made it on to the show, even alluded about.

Expect me to use a lot of "keep reading" for these writeups, as well as two-layered writeups, and that I may need to put the screenshots in the content and decide how to deal with the post labels differently.

Without spoilers to the specific storylines:

I read one premise where one of Nina's orphans mentions a domestic violence past and it is key to the plot.

A teenager is taking people hostage and holding guns on them.

One of the Voltron pilots' relatives has a past history with drug gangs.

There are several episodes that show the domestic issues between Keith and Allura more openly, as they have to take small steps toward marriage where Lance could whirlwind rush through marriage and a child have no expectations set on him. One of these involves a discussion of a double bed. Nothing on the surface explicit, except not something you'd be discussing in a 1984 show.

And then we are struggling to continue to confront that Coran may have had a child out of wedlock or quickly married a second wife (Leda) after the unexplained absence of the first one (Nina's mother), and what this means when both are discovered to still be alive to Coran.

It's like we were still throwing brainstorms on the page before deciding what to cut. So expect me to go slow as I figure out how best to handle this.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - THE INFATUATED MISADVENTURES OF PIDGE IN THE 1984 SHOW

Last post, I talked about where seeds seemed to be planted for potential long term relationships in the 20 U.S. produced episodes for Lance and Hunk.

Now, let's talk about what those same 20 episodes do with Pidge, and how it seems to support Lance being set up to grow for a more serious relationship if the right person found him.

Both Lance and Pidge, in the original 52 episodes, regularly seem to compete for kisses from Princess Allura out on the balcony. Pidge usually gets kissed by the mice instead, except the one time Pidge saves Allura's life from a near death sleep by threatening Haggar and Lotor with a hand grenade (see "The Sleeping Princess"). Apparently, that's what it took for Nanny to be okay with it... but once was enough.

In the 20 U.S. produced episodes, there are instances where Lance and Pidge react to the same woman initially, but their overall responses diverge.

Omnia in "The Traitor" is the first of these. Lance starts out referring to her as a dream, but once he understands the magnitude of her problems, gets to work on the problem and in fact chews out the others for just standing around. Once they've agreed on a plan, Allura complements Omnia on being a very courageous woman, and Pidge follows with "And pretty, too!". Lance is standing right next to him staring off with intent into space, and looking at the staging, it seems to be in Omnia's direction. Pidge's comment just seems so out of place in such a serious moment - and also, up until now, something one would have expected from Lance.

This scenario repeats itself a couple episodes later in "Take a Robot to Lunch," the episode that introduces Mary Ann the pacifist scientist. The Voltron Force is taken by Coran to meet one of the Galaxy's greatest scientists, not being told the scientist is female and without Coran correcting when the pronoun "he" is used.

Which results in a lot of confusion when they are introduced.

Lance comments in a surprise it is a woman. If you look at his overall conversation, especially Lance's conversation with Coran as she leaves discussing that she is a "very special lady" and Coran explains her convictions, this is not a case of flirting but respect. Major growth for Lance.

Meanwhile, Pidge upon meeting another scientist only seems to be able to manage "She's pretty!"

Um, okay... I suppose. It doesn't bother me quite so much with Omnia, because maybe it gets to that point where he is getting interested in other women besides the somewhat fairytale qualities of Princess Allura.

But meeting another scientist and being more interested in her looks than anything else? This seems to indicate Pidge developing, shall we say, other priorities.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - COUPLES THAT COULD HAVE BEEN CANON?

According to an article in Advertising Age written in October 1985, Peter Keefe dropped hints of a second generation show in development of "three to four of the most popular" show characters.

Looking at the 20 U.S. produced episodes, it clearly establishes Sven and Romelle as a long term couple, and Alfor giving his blessing for Keith and Allura (leaving that assumption they are a certainty).

Which leaves a nagging question... who would be the fourth if they went that route?

A couple years back, I came to the idea that maybe Lance and Omnia might have been that couple. Looking even past my own biases based on my experiences, the two characters share a lot of similarities in ability and what has affected their lives personally. However, Omnia is the more grounded of the two and could complement him. Though her introductory episode implies she stays with Joran, though an episode providing an update on that planet mentions Joran being in action with no word about Omnia. It is as if it was left open for her storyline to be altered.

However, more recently, I came to an alternative realization, and wonder if maybe two roads were being left open for development. As I've started going through this project on Tumblr, I have wondered if Hunk and Mary Ann might have been intended to be parents to the fourth character, or at least an alternative to consider so that could leave the door open for either Lance or Hunk.

Here is why I think this.

Regardless of who is chosen between these two, Pidge would not move forward. In other words, there would be no tech-savvy character. A child of Mary Ann and Hunk would fill that void, not to mention have been raised in quite an interesting background and would be an intriguing character to write. A father who has a big heart and helps anyone in need, but at the same time isn't afraid to put up a fight; an intelligent tech-savvy mother who wants to avoid fighting whenever possible but has learned to use her tech skills for defense because of the trauma she's seen.

That's not to say writing about any kids of Lance and Omnia would not be interesting. How do two people who have lost their families and any idea of home and security try to rebuild that with one another?

Either route is tricky because at least one parent would be rooted in severe trauma. But it is intriguing.

(And if anyone is wondering, yes I notice Mary Ann and Starla for our fan fiction development are both redheads... not that I think it means much of anything but it is certainly intriguing...)

Not much new here, except some commentary on names and I'll get there shortly.

Given what is in this surviving piece, I think Nanny turned out to be a clone and they had to rescue Nanny. The reason I think this is that while she is annoying, she is being worse than annoying.

Now, on to all the names stuff.

No idea why it was Mount Voltron when we knew even then Crown Mountain was an actual place. Nanny goes to the village near there to find "brave, intelligent men" to replace Allura in the Lion.

Now on to the names. Pidge and Keith arguing over the game of space chess seems to have been a contrivance to bring up names.

Now I see why I never remember Hunk's name. We must have just been hearing about Leonard Maltin the film reviewer and subconsciously liked the name. Note the misspelling Lenoard for Lenoard Martin. Now if his first name was Leonard, Leo would have made more sense for a nickname given the hangs around with Lions or his stature.

The Pidge thing is just weird. I guess we had it in our heads you were required to change last name on adoption. Growing up, all our classmates that we knew that were adopted had. But to Garrison? Surely the adoptive parents would have had a better last name than that. Not at all sure what we were thinking.

That is all that exists of this. Next time I share content from the Nina Season 2 files, it will be episodes.

Despite Hunk's insistence they are already busy, Coran and Keith are concerned about unusual quiet.

Not only is Haggar still into lazon powered Robeasts, this one is notable for its height, apparently. Since the special was not finished, I can't recall why.

Nanny is trying to put Hunk on a diet at lunch. She really has issues, as we will see in this part. Which reminds me, where in the world is Starla? We see her in a later episode. but this really doesn't set up why she isn't here. She was introduced as Nanny's niece in Season 1 with a massive crush on Hunk.

Ditto for Maria, while I am at it. Maria (Keith's younger sisiter) definitely shows up later too, but in Nina Season 1 she moved into the Castle.

Nanny's attitude seems to be bothering everyone, including Lance and Nina who talk about it while trying to spend time with their son. Even Lancelot breaks down and cries when she shows up and orders Lance to put his own son down.

So what in the universe is going on here?

This sequence tries to set the tone of what the Voltron Force is still doing on Arus in peacetime. It's rather stilted but I can see what we are trying to work on here.

These storylines are aware of what has transpired in the 20 U.S. produced episodes that were made for the show, and take the attitude that Nina Season 1 comes right after, followed by this. Based on what was produced, we know that Alfor more or less gave his blessing for Keith and Allura to be together (even if Nanny and Coran might not quite agree). Allura sees Nina as mother and wife to Lance and is trying to feel out her next steps in life. Nanny is still dead set on Allura becoming exactly what Nanny thinks Allura should be.

Elsewhere, Lance has stepped in to try and keep the orphanage running and has enlisted Keith's help to break up a fight between a couple of teenagers. Since motherhood is taking more of Nina's time, and she wouldn't have any desire to leave Arus and her newfound family, Lance is trying his best to support his wife and make himself useful. I suppose you can argue Keith is trying to do the same since he would not want to leave.

The rest of this section explains a space chess board in excruciating detail. Hunk and Pidge are playing a game of it. Hunk struggles and would like someone to teach him. Pidge volunteers when they have spare time. Hunk gripes they never have spare time (even in peace) but doesn't get the chance to explain why.

We felt the need for a pre season special to set up from where we left the Nina Season 1 material that pretty much wrapped up a lot. This allowed us to integrate what had aired with the 1985 episodes with our own ideas.

Why had we just not given up after those episode aired? I guess we were stubborn, I guess.

Also, another story I rarely tell is that when we moved homes in the middle of the 20 U.S. episodes airing, we sent a follow up letter to WEP telling them we moved and our new address so we could make sure to hear back about what we sent. How do we know that got through? Marc Handler's letter to us in March of 1986 has the new address typed on it. The package of 21 episodes were sent when we still lived at the rental house.

Due to various reasons (including Marc's being out of the country from late in 1985 to early 1986), there really wasn't anyone around to tell us no. So we kept on keeping on.

What survives of this development is the setup for the characters and new stories, not so much the actual plot. There are 16 screenshots in all. These first 4 set up the arrival of Zarkon's grandson Zelone. The 20 U.S. episodes mention Lotor having little nephews (it's the last of the episodes, "Breaking Up is Hard to Doom"). My guess is that Zelone we saw as their older sibling in order to streamline the narrative. Lotaria definitely wasn't a mother.

Apologies for a bit of a spoiler for the Nina Season 1 narrative, but unlike the episodes that aired we had Lotor turn good with the help of his twin sister, raised separately from him to see which one might turn out to be the better soldier. The U.S. episodes forced us to pivot slightly and have it be a joint effort between Lotaria and Merla.

Zelone was an attempt to bring a different, and younger, villain flavor to the canvas. Looking at what we will examine in the subsequent posts for Nina Season 2, you can see how well it did and did not work.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - Always In My Heart

I was watching a YouTube piece recently about people who have taken fan fiction is recent years, scrubbed all fandom IP references, and then publishers have put on the material.

As someone who has similar roots, I want to be clear I have not done nor would I ever do that with any items I have done for Lion Force VOLTRON. I have done this with a spec script I did for a live-action series once, and turned into into a short story, mainly because I liked the guest characters. I'll give a hint that it has come up before, but it is the same piece that Kelly Blackwoode (a name originally from content I played with and abandoned for Vehicle Team VOLTRON) became transplanted. It's in one of my self published anthologies.

The closest I have ever come is to use the names "Lance" and "Nina" in an homage sort of way. They were lead characters in a live-action animation hybrid film I originally wrote during my undergraduate years, then tried to convert to a novel, then back to film which is the excerpt featured here. There's a few hints as to what the film is about, and when you realize it was first written in the era when WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? and COOL WORLD were coming out, you may be able to extrapolate some of the plot.

I have iterated on the film quite a few times since 1998, including a later pass at a novelization and some serious fantasy world building. After a while I found I became too absorbed in the world building and ventured too far from the heart of the story. So I tabled it a few years ago, and every so often try to revisit what media I want to do the story in if I picked up the story from scratch. Animation is definitely more feasible now than it was back when I first worked on this, but it is also less novel of a concept.

Maybe one of these days I'll finish it.

Last little bit of trivia on this: in more recent years, I've gone into doing work in the virtual world space. My avatar is known as Kreatya, pronounced CREAT-ya. It is a discarded name from this project.

So, I suppose you could say that a lot of roads lead back to Nina.

These are the notes I had for the Crimson Quadrant from 1985.

The Crimson Quadrant mainly consists of canon one shot referenced planets in the show, such as Anga's homeworld. Others are of worlds we know existed but weren't named, such as Stride the Tiger Fighter's homeworld, where it is mentioned in a later episode he helped prevent an uprising.

The main planet that is significant to the Nina stories is Tymancia, the planet where she grew up and is destroyed during Nina Season 1.

And with that concludes the overview of my original Starmap notes.

SHANNON MUIR'S VOLTRON PAGES - The Original Cerulian (Cerulean) Quadrant Map of the Denubian (Danubian) Galaxy from 1985

These notes are the biggest piece of evidence that at thirteen, I was struggling with figuring out some words by how things sound, and thereby why the Galaxy was mispelled.

I had not learned at that point Cerulean was a shade of blue. Therefore, I kept ending up with the spelling Cerulian. You can also see that I struggle with it on the name of the ruler of Titus, who is introduced in "Summit Meeting" in canon.

Note that I have always spelled the scientist on Caspia as Marianne, others name her Mary Ann.

Also of note is that despite our take on some things in Nina Season 1, the concept of Zarkon's wife (Lotor's Mom) being deceased didn't sit well with us. It fits with the ongoing strong women being a thing. Note that we did set up a planet ruled by Zarkon's ex-wife. Having said that I don't remember actually getting around to doing anything with it in the Nina Season 2 stuff. Probably one of the things reduced to just an unexplored title. I'll keep an eye out if planet Goleb or the name Madra pops up in the notes.

In the final map, Doom moved to the Crimson Quadrant, which sounds far more ominous. However, we oddly put all the desert planets (except Yentile) in the same solar system as Doom. You will note that Zaal (the world from "The Traitor") is misspelled here because that's how I heard it back then. Just like the spelling of the galaxy name. We didn't have a stereo TV then and I wonder if things might have been clearer to me if I had. I definitely hear them correctly now.

The emphasis about Cyville actually comes from one of the episodes of the first 52, in a one sentence reference.

I know that Terra is another name for Earth, but since VOLTRON mythos never used Terra and Earth interchangeably, and Pidge emphasized his kid sister being stationed there versus at home base (see the episode "Survival") we ended up making it a Far Universe planet. Also, the Season 2 episode couldn't have been written as they would have gotten in trouble with Coran for leaving the area again.
