Headaches
You look at me shaking your head and roll your eyes the way you always do when I’m being silly, all while wearing that telling my smile that let’s me know you love all my quirks and ask me, “what am I going to do with you?” I meet your eyes as I do whenever you ask this, giving you that moon-eyed smile and answer the only answer that has ever existed: “love me.”
I wish I felt something while writing this but I don’t. The pills won’t let me. And I thank God everyday for that little miracle.
Short Poem Untitled
Had a dream last night I went for a drive, Windows down never felt more alive, Then I awoke to a bed of just me, And my heart asked my head how it felt to be set free.
Thank you, April showers, for bringing May flowers. But more importantly, for washing away all of March’s bull shit.

You know an ad is brilliant when it can bring you to tears. Mullen has taken a page out of my life. This video serves as a lovely reminder that my Mom continues to be my biggest cheerleader during the search for my first agency position.
Why am I here?
Before you get worried that this is going to be one of those self reflection posts, don't, it's not. It is a question of why I am online blogging during a (finally) gorgeous Carolina day. Days like today are meant to be spent outside, enjoying nature, and living life. I can blog about the "deep insights" I find during these life experiences on a day with far less sunshine and after this intoxicating perfume of Spring has worn off. Until then I shall be outside catching Spring fever faster than the blooming flowers have turned my once black car yellow. What are you doing here? Go outside.
A Stern Talk with Myself
Shannon: Why are you not keeping up with your blog? You set a resolution!
Shannon: School has been CRAZY and I've been doing a lot of creative writing lately.
Shannon: THEN POST IT! You WILL write a daily blog post.
Shannon: I will. And I will.
Shannon: Well, that chat went well. Hopefully we can do this again sometime.
Shannon: Just not in public, we wouldn't deal well with all the strange looks.
Shannon: True. Ridiculous dance party time?
Shannon: Ridiculous dance party time.
Sib-Stitch... because my siblings and I are anything but basic. Happy National Siblings Day+1! This is that time we got in the way of my dog's selfie.
I Live My Life in Purple
I live my life in purple, In its posh formality, In its consuming passion, In its infinite wisdom. I live my life in purple, In its whimsical calm, In its vibrant dance, In its subdued strength. I live my life in purple.
How'd you spend your Super Bowl?
Stuffing your face with loved ones? Consuming a few too many cold ones at the bar? I spent mine in the dungeon that is the Carolina Coliseum with over 100 classmates, 60 pizzas, rating every Super Bowl spot in real time. If that sounds terrible to you, we could never be friends. The Super Bowl is the Super Bowl of advertising and EVERYONE has an opinion on the spots. As advertising students we rated the commercials on three criteria: persuasiveness, likability, and brand identity. Most evaluate the spots on pure likability. As an advertiser I appreciate the spots that are able to combine this with their brand identity. It is “easy” to create a likable ad; it is amazing to create a likable spot that is so tied to the brand there is no way you could replace the product with any other. This is where the Doritos Crash the Superbowl spots failed to me this year. That is what was most telling that they were consumer generated spots. If I replaced the Doritos bag in those two ads with say a Lay’s bag they would still make sense. Hence the lack of true brand identity and brilliance. Our 2014 Cocky Award winner was Cheerio's loveable ad with the sister-to-be hustling her parents for a puppy. I mean it basically combined the two things that equate to Super Bowl success: cute kid + animal = what not to love? Oh yah, it was persuasive, likable, and had a strong brand identity too...
While I feel Puppy Love will certainly be the cutest Superbowl spot of 2014, I believe it is already being a bit over hyped. First of all, it combines two of Bud's hugely successful Superbowl ads' emotional draws into one commercial. Insta-success. It is the exact same concept as their 2013 spot with a man having to leave his horse, except replace man with a puppy. Cue the adorableness. Dogs have played a role in Budweiser's messaging for years. It strikes me as an odd choice to use a yellow lab, though undeniably cute, when Dalmatians or Dalmatian look-alikes have always been the Clydesdale's canine companions. Regardless, the "adopt a dog" message is not the first to come out of the company, but is perhaps the first to come from its headlining brand. Bud Light kicked off this public service message with their 2012 Here Weego. You remember... the rescue with the beer fetching trick that every 20-something immediately tried to teach their own dog? The collaboration of the two commercials produces a solid showing for Budweiser. The little puppy who may think he is a Clydesdale will surely be loved by all Superbowl watchers with a soft spot. Though I personally find the ad to be less touching than the original Brotherhood spot. I feel it just doesn't have the same emotional component to it and that may be because the puppy never actually leaves the way the horse does only to be reunited a long ways down the road, but rather is only quite literally reunited "a long ways down the road" (solid imagery Bud). The spot also feels a bit rushed to me. The idea that the puppy is actually getting adopted by someone else also gets lost on me (it took me the third time watching the spot) because he looks too much like the Clydesdale's farmer. And finally, while I do think the song choice of Parachute's "Let Her Go" was strong it just doesn't compare to Brotherhood's use of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" which was what truly made that spot what it was. Try as he might, it is next to impossible for a puppy to compete with the sentiment brought on by Stevie Nick's hauntingly beautiful lyrics. Now excuse me while I go tear up watching Puppy Love's prequel one more time.
The best revenge is massive success.

Hugh Howey Tips
Today my English class had the pleasure of hosting Hugh Howey of Wool fame. He was an interesting speaker as he is one of the first authors to achieve major success by self publishing. He was smart enough to recognize that in this age of information sharing his writing could achieve the most success through his own platform. So here are some wise words of advice he shared with us (I have taken a few liberties):
1. Write EVERY day. He likened this drive to that of an alcoholic fighting against their demons, in another aspect if you are a writer with a desire to write embrace those demons.
2. Don't dream about being the next great author, do it! Stop killing innocent bystanders in Grand Theft Auto 5 or watching a rerun of How I Met Your Mother for the 8th time and get to work.
3. If you are awesome enough to be able to inspire a fan fiction series embrace it. "Why wouldn't you want to allow others to play inside your world, you are not some sort of supreme ruler"
4. When you become successful, help those who are still looking for their own big break. In essence, Howey was able to help all the people who were integral in his own success accomplish their own goals. How awesome.
