Hey dude bros! I’m in Boston from tomorrow until early Sunday morning (1AM) and I won’t be bringing my laptop with me. So I’m gonna try to get what I can done across all my blogs before I have to leave!
“So what you’re saying is that you conveniently left the kingdom and everyone behind since you were there too long. Sorry if I think that sounds a little suspicious.”
An eyebrow quirks at the gesture, and she almost doesn’t resist the temptation to roll her eyes. There’s no way she would go off by herself with another person she doesn’t trust in general, let alone this lunatic. He definitely doesn’t seem all that bright.
“As if I’d go with you alone. Are you joking? you must think I’m really stupid or something.”
That was to be expected. Of course she wouldn’t want to go with him- he was a stranger on a beach saying he was a shark. Lucky him he’d find the one human with common sense. A second glance around the beach and he saw that there weren’t too many people there with them. It only reassured him that he couldn’t possibly do it right here and now.
“How am I supposed to prove anything to you if you don’t come with me. And you’re right. I do think you’re stupid for not believing me.”
His arms crossed and tried to think how he could ever convince her to come with him. No money, no food, nothing. What kind of things did humans like other than those two...? Nothing, right?
❝ Thank you… Samekichi. ❞
A genuine smile painted the sea witch’s lips, one made of pure happiness before she turned back to her sandwich. She was truly grateful that Samekichi had agreed to become her familiar and she couldn’t imagine her life any other way.
“Yeah, don’t mention it, I guess.”
Maybe it wasn’t the right thing to bring up but at least the conversation was over and done with. While he would always remain curious about what life was like before he became a familiar, he would find out on his own. He wouldn’t bother Wadanohara about it again. Samekichi was happy being with her and he wouldn’t know what to do without her.
“Kinda like that cat ‘ttebayo— ah, never mind. Neh I’ll keep a look out for her, but can’t say I’ve seen anyone like that dattebayo. Any idea where she was headin?”
“Nah, I’m not too sure about where she might’ve gone. But she said something about going to a shrine, I think? She left as soon as we got to shore and I haven’t been able to find her.”
A smile painted Wadanohara’s lips after she swallowed the food in her mouth. The sea witch couldn’t help but giggle in response as memories overflowed her mind.
❝ Lucky you that I remember when it happened. I remember being very happy and thinking that I wouldn’t be alone anymore. ❞
“Yeah well... Don’t worry about being alone again. I’ll make sure that doesn’t happen like it did before.”
He looked up at her smiling at him for just a second and immediately put his head back down to look at his food. Avoiding moving his head back up to Wadanohara he continued eating. Wanting to remember what his life had been was forgotten and he instead thought about forcing away the heat on his cheeks.
Ah, they could really tell that the other did NOT want to be here, searching for some insignificant hair bow of all things. They sort of felt sorry they even asked him to do it, but at the time they felt like they were helping him by giving him something to do. Man.. they sure didn’t want to become a witch’s familiar any time soon. It sounded like a strict job. “R-Right.” they nodded, seperating from the shark’s company to go search for it themselves. They didn’t know how long this was going to take to be quite honest; for all they knew it could’ve gotten swept away with the current by now, or perhaps someone snatched it off the coral so they could own it themselves. Their guilt for making the shark familiar do this was increasing, making them even more anxious. They decided to distract themselves with the task at hand, and started scanning for any hint of bright blue amongst the red hued coral stalks.
Looking around the area he spotted a spec of blue not far from where he stood. It hung from the branch of coral and swayed in the current of the ocean’s cool water. Moving towards it he reached through the branches that poked into his arm- and even his tail when he leaned forward- hhe grabbed it and stepped back to take it out.
“Nope- that’s not it.”
Rather than the object he was actually looking for, the shark came across the ripped clothing of someone who tried to get past prior to them coming. He left it where he stood and instead continued searching through the coral.
“Have you found it yet?”
❝ Of course. I wanted to wash our shirts but I suppose they can wait. ❞
Wadanohara replied, echoing his yawn as she sat across from him, dragging her own school bag over and pulling out their history homework.
❝ Should we bother Irena later? Or suffer through Ramen again? ❞
Gripping her pencil tightly between her teeth, ignoring yet another growl from her stomach. It sounded like she had skipped lunch to go help out in the library again. That or read a book. Either it certainly wasn’t healthy and it wasn’t like she meant to be skipping meals, it just sort of …happened.
A small noise had come from out of the blue as he thought about asking Irena for help with their meal. Looking to the direction it came from he looked to Wadanohara.
“If you’re hungry we could make some ramen before we do homework? I feel like we have to stop going to Irena for everything.”
As much as he loved the other’s cooking he couldn’t deny that they would have to learn how to get by without her help. It was still so strange to him having to ask his neighbor to come over or to ask if they could go over for food... They were old enough to learn themselves, weren’t they?
“Actually, I’d love to see that. Maybe then you can finally realize you’re not actually a shark when you can’t turn into one because it’s not possible!”
He sounds incredibly confident, but she’ll call his bluff. He aggravates her enough to take the stupid bet. While she shouldn’t be betting on the impossible, considering she’s part of a secretive operatives to kill some creatures called shadows, she doesn’t care anymore. what’s the worst that could happen?
“Alright, so where is ‘Wadanohara’ and the others? If you’re in some witch cult or whatever, why aren’t you with them?”
“They’re all probably back home in the Sea Kingdom. I left because I had been there all day... I can’t just stay in one place forever. So I wandered off.”
Maybe he could just eat her. No... He couldn’t do that. Then there would be all kinds of people ridding the menace of sharks from the beaches. Samekcihi doubted that such a stubborn human would taste very good anyways. Leaving the thought behind and quickly as it came to him, he turned towards the far end of the beach where rocks would be able to hide them from others.
“Fine- I’ll show you then. We just have to go somewhere else so no one else sees.”
“See, ya gotta be a loony if ya don’t know what Halloween is ‘ttebayo! Neh I’m useful.. Sorry, I’ll help— looking for a witch yeah? Can’t say I’ve seen one.”
“Yeah- she’s pretty short, dress in all blue... Tall hat with an anchor on it. I was supposed to keep an eye on her but uh... Didn’t go too well.”
They sighed a bit, glad to be of some use to the shark. To be honest, they had spare ribbons at home, which was why they had gone so long without it, but they couldn’t think of any other task to give the shark familiar that was worthy reporting to his witch. At his request, they nodded and turned on one heel, pointing back along the path they came from. “I’m pretty sure I lost it back here, a little ways off down the path. It might’ve snagged on a coral branch.” Some of the coral stalks were as tall or even taller than the tiny ray, so it wasn’t that far of a stretch that it would have caught on something and untied from their head. How they didn’t feel it, they couldn’t answer that either.
Ugh... The coral around here was always so sharp to navigate through that once he was reminded of it he suddenly didn’t want to help anymore... But he had already agreed to doing it and unless he wanted to be scolded when he got home then he would do it without any complaints. Worst case scenario he’d just turn to a shark and chomp the accessory off the coral once they found it.
“Alright- I’ll start looking over here while you check over to the left. Shout if you see it and I’ll go grab it.”
“Not really ‘ttebayo. See thats kinda why, cos last time I saw a witch it was Halloween and ya just don’t go lookin for witches unless you’re kinda loony dattebayo.”
“What’s Halloween? I’m not ‘loony’, I just want to find my witch and to go back home. It’s hard to find useful people around here, isn’t it...”
Wadanohara pondered this for a few moments as she continued to chew, finishing her first sandwich before blinking her eyes in thought.
❝ Is it possible that because you took on an entirely new set of responsibilities that you forgot your past as well? ❞
She proposed before beginning on the next sandwich.
He paused his eating for a moment as he thought. There was no way of knowing why he had memory loss but there was no reason why that couldn’t be his answer. Ever since he became her familiar his mindset switched to wanting to protect her and only her.
“I don’t see why not- I’m sure my life wasn’t that interesting beforehand. The farthest I can remember is when I became your familiar and even that is a little hazy.”
A short nod came from the girl as she stood there, casting a glance back towards the stain on the carpet that was now beginning to turn white. She bit down on her lip to prevent herself from apologizing any further before hesitantly turning on her heel and following Samekichi to the kitchen.
❝ That’s right, Samekichi. Homework. I would’ve worked on mine but I was gonna do laundry and then bleach was everywhere. ❞
In the back of Wadda’s mind she was hoping for some food but that meant crawling over to their good friend, Irena’s apartment. She’d probably do that after homework but she couldn’t ignore the rumbling sounds that her stomach was making.
He opened his mouth in a wide yawn as he set his bag on the ground beside the chair and took a seat. The stain on the living room floor was out of sight thus out of mind. That would be an issue for the future- maybe they could put a piece of furniture over it like a table or rug.
“Good thing you didn’t or else you might’ve been spending more time than you needed to on it.”
At least they had one class today. But that was their history class which-strangely enough- was his best class. He could memorize dates just fine but when it came to math and chemical equations he was hopeless.
“Eh- we can do the laundry later... It’s not going anywhere.”
“How about actual proof? Witches don’t exist - sea or otherwise. Look, I don’t know what kind of mess-up delusion you’re living in, but you clearly need professional help.”
A huff escapes her lips, the temptation to roll her eyes growing stronger by the second. What starts out as a friendly advice to a random stranger quickly turns sour. Of course, what else does she expect? Fate is cruel and black-humored; the more pain it brings, the more amusement it gets. This twisted conversation is just a result of that. Try to help someone to avoid pointed stares and laughing gossip? Of course that would only lead to an argument of the disillusioned.
“I don’t know what kind of messed up you have to be to think you’re a sea creature, but I’m sure there’s a doctor for your type of insanity somewhere!”
“Do you want me to turn into an actual shark right here and now and scare an entire beach of people?”
It had occurred once before and he never wanted to go through that hell ever again. Lucky for him he had gotten to the ocean before pictures were taken but all of that screaming was murder on his ears. Hopefully this girl wouldn’t scream nearly as loud if and when he showed her that he wasn’t lying at all and was- in fact- a shark.
“I’m not insane. I’m the familiar of a witch named Wadanohara. There are other familiars who aren’t really worth mentioning.”
“The ocean? Wave came from a fishing village near the ocean and that’s pretty far away.”
There were no oceans that she knew of near the Empire and the closest one was in Wave’s village. Thankfully she knew the way to get there, but it would take two days the longest to walk there. She wouldn’t mind offering to take him, but she had to be weary of him. She couldn’t exactly take the chance at him being a member of the Revolutionary Army and taking her out by way of ambush.
“Unless you have some form of transportation, you’re going to have to do a lot of walking to get there. Plus the danger beasts are relatively strong around that area too…—”
“Beasts...? There are... beasts. On the way back to the ocean. That’s what you’re saying?”
Alright well if he could barely take on other sharks in the ocean how would he dream of taking down these unknown beasts on land? Fighting out of water was still a strange thing to Samekichi as he didn’t do it very often. He hated to ask but maybe this girl could help him get back home... Wadanohara would end up worrying about him soon.
That was the last thing he wanted... If she came looking for him then she would have a chance of encountering these beasts as well.
“Gr... Do you think you could help me get back home....”
tell me how gr10 tarako is ;)
“I hate Tarako. He doesn’t know my name and if I get one more octokiss or octohug I’ll eat him.”
Thoughts on fukami, memoca and dolphi?
“The bird’s annoying, Dolphi’s okay in small doses and Fukami is the only one I can tolerate when he isn’t threatening me with what he would do if I hurt Wadanohara…”
