This particular shark is believed to predate the existence of the United States of America. A team of scientists discovered a cluster of Greenland sharks and concluded that some of them are the oldest known vertebrates alive today. These sharks inhabit the frigid waters of Greenland and were the subject of a study conducted in 2017, which examined 28 individuals. The eldest shark in the study measured 16.5 feet (five meters) in length and was estimated to be approximately 392 years old. The researchers established, with a "95 percent certainty," that the shark's age fell within the range of 272 to 512 years, with a most probable age of around 390.

While the exact reasons behind their exceptional lifespan remain unclear, it is believed that the arctic temperatures they inhabit (plunging below 29 degrees Fahrenheit) contribute to their longevity. These low temperatures result in reduced body temperatures and slower metabolisms, thereby minimizing damage to the sharks' tissues.

Additionally, their growth rate is exceptionally slow, with less than half an inch (a centimeter) gained per year, suggesting a significantly longer lifespan compared to other vertebrates. Furthermore, the females of this species exhibit delayed sexual maturity, only beginning to mate at the age of 156.

Oceans are generally over-exploited, under-protected, and out of mind. The goal is to share the ocean with everyone to generate ocean understanding, curiosity, and connection. Through the non-profit "The Hydrous" is using virtual reality to "bring the ocean to everyone." The San Francisco-based collective of scientists, filmmakers and divers is taking people on immersive virtual dives to create a sense of "universal ocean empathy," raising awareness of reef damage and inspiring action to protect our seas. Swim with manta rays, sea turtles, and sharks while you explore beautiful and threatened coral ecosystems and hear from marine scientists and young ocean advocates.

It has been in the last year, amid global lockdowns, that virtual dives have truly come into their own. Since June 2020, almost 1 million people, aged eight to 90, have taken part in virtual dives.

The lost shark (Carcharhinus obsoletus), which was only formally described last year, enters the Red List as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct). The species was last recorded in 1934. Its habitat in the South China Sea has been extensively fished for more than a century and remains one of the most over-exploited marine regions in the world. As it is unlikely that the species could have persisted under this heavy pressure, the lost shark may already be extinct. Among those at risk are four hammerhead shark species, four species of angel shark and the giant manta ray. In the update, a total of 316 species of sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras are now classified as “threatened,” or at risk of extinction in the wild. All of the 17 freshwater fish species endemic to Lake Lanao and its outlet in the Philippines are now Extinct (15 species) or Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) (two species).

The extinctions were caused by predatory introduced species, compounded by over-harvesting and destructive fishing methods.

Rays, sharks, and dolphins enjoy new freedom as humans retreat from the oceans. It is a now-familiar story: as humans are trapped indoors by the deadly coronavirus, wildlife is taking the opportunity to fill abandoned spaces. The phenomenon has been particularly noticeable along the Emirati coastline in recent weeks.

Exotic rays flocking to Dubai Marina, dolphins playing around the man-made Palm Jumeirah islands, and a large gathering of sharks off Ras al Khaimah.

Beaches have been closed dozens of times this summer on Cape Cod, prompted by nearby sightings of great white sharks. But researchers say the rising number of closures and sightings is “definitely not” reflective of a “boom” or sudden increase in the shark population.

If one day sharks suddenly decided that humans were a viable prey option & a favorable source of nutrition, sharks would be hunting, killing & consuming humans on a daily basis. Luckily sharks have much higher standards & prefer far more nutritious & healthy foods. Contrary to what many people still think, sharks don’t spend much, if any, thinking about humans, they have much more important things to do, like protecting & maintaining balance in their oceans. In fact, smart sharks stay as far away from humans as possible.

So for anyone who still thinks that these predators are malicious & deliberate man-&-woman eating monsters, wake the f%ck up already!!! Educate yourself & learn the truth! Fatal shark attacks do occur, yet the frequency is so infinitesimal it’s actually unbelievable! But, if you’re still looking for monsters & something to demonize, take a look at human history, take a look at current times, maybe even take a look in the mirror, that’s where you’ll find the true monsters of planet earth...

Yes, sharks are truly vital for marine eco-systems! There’re a few reasons for this... Sharks trim the herbivorous populations to a healthy size - ensuring they don't overfeed on the primary producers. Sharks will feed on the sick and the old fish, and by doing so they strengthen the gene-pool of the fish.

Sharks are also observed to have a positive impact on ecosystems by intimidating other species. This is the case with Green sea turtles who otherwise tend to roam around and overgraze on the seagrass. If an apex predator, like the shark, is over-fished it will instantly affect the whole eco-system.

There are around 400 species of sharks living in seas and oceans, and the great white shark is among the most known ones. Having become the major character in the Jaws movie and novel, this shark is now associated with danger and bloodlust.

The great white shark (Lat. Carcharodon carcharias) can be found in the waters of all the major oceans, except the Arctic Ocean. The filming of this 360-video took place near Guadalupe Island located off Mexico's Lower California Peninsula, one of the very few places where you can experience the program "Diving with sharks".
