What do you believe in? Myself. And you. And Jesper.
i think the way the fandom perceives kaz distracts us from the fact that he has a really stupid teenage boy kind of humour, like the way he constantly teased matthias about talking to the sacred tree or how he always needs to have a comeback to jesper’s stupid jokes or how when they were breaking matthias out of hellgate he distracted a guard with a fucking “your mum” joke???? i love this boy so much
Did it a couple of weeks ago but forget to post it here !
I’ve been reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and damn! This duology (please let it be a trilogy !) was SO GOOD! Honestly I am absolutely obsessed.
Here’s an interpretation of those babies, kaz Brekker and Inej Ghafa. If you read the books you know which scene this is 😏
If not please read it and be obsessed with me !
breaking news: the two thieves that just robbed you are in love
Jesper Fahey and Milo the Goat🐐🖤
Something I found super interesting reading Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom is how Kaz is the most dangerous boy in the Barrel and doesn’t hesitate to use people’s shame against them to get what he wants. But with his Crows he’s inadvertently put them at ease about their own shortcomings.
First, we’ve got Nina who told Kaz everything about what happened with Matthias and how she’d gotten him locked up in Hellgate and I remember she said something along the lines of that he listened without judgment and I got the sense that there was relief for her in that.
And second, we’ve got Wylan who talks about how he confessed to Kaz that he couldn’t read and because of that his father hated him and he couldn’t be used as leverage. There’s this sense, when Wylan is talking about his admission to Kaz, that Wylan felt surprised and so relieved that Kaz didn’t care, didn’t ridicule him. Because that’s what his father had taught him - that his disability was a terrible weakness and people would use it against him and treat him like he’s stupid. But Kaz didn’t. He’s the first person Wylan shared his secret with (and also like kudos to Wylan for admitting something so painful and scary to someone he admittedly didn’t really trust or like much but he did it so the crew wouldn’t be going into an exchange blind) and the first person he trusted with that secret didn’t treat him any differently. I think that was really monumental for Wylan, to see that his father was wrong, to see that not everyone would treat him differently and badly.
Obviously Kaz isn’t nonjudgmental for any sort of noble reasons. He did, after all, use Nina’s confession to get her to help him with the Ice Court heist because he knew how much saving Matthias from Hellgate meant to her and how guilty she felt about it. He genuinely does not care about other people’s shame beyond how it can be useful to him. But there is still a relief in confessing something you find shameful to someone who then doesn’t judge you for it.
Got your boyfriend locked up to save his life? Whatever. Can’t read? Not a single fuck is given on this day. Get in losers, we’re gonna get 30 million kruge.
Although. There is one person whose shortcoming he doesn’t tolerate well at all. I’m talking about Jesper, of course. Jesper, who so reminds Kaz of the brother he lost and who Kaz is also afraid of losing for the same reasons - they’re damned fools with money. Jesper’s debt lands him in hot water and Kaz tolerates it right up until it lands them all in hot water and nearly costs Inej her life. It nearly cost them the Ice Court job and he almost lost someone else he cares deeply about. The tension between them in the books was so painful because Jesper doesn’t understand why Kaz has iced him out because Kaz has never been open with anybody and I don’t think even Kaz is fully aware of why he’s so angry with and unforgiving of Jesper until the end of CK when he’s finally able to understand what Jesper (and Inej) mean to him.
Not really going anywhere with this. Just some thoughts I had while maintenance does some really loud construction work in my apartment lol. I also had minor thoughts about the things Kaz did for the Dregs that made them sort of admire him - he built them a reputation and made them formidable again. Made the Slat dry and warm (out of his own pocket, iirc). Got 5th harbor up and running along with the Crow Club. It’s just interesting to me that he puts a great deal of distance between himself and everyone else and yet there are things he does that draw people closer to him.
No one:
My brain at 3am :if i couldn't walk I'd crawl to you and no matter how broken we were we'd fight our way out knifes drawn pistols blazing because that's what we do, we never stop fighting
Me*sobbing *: am i cursed with eternal sadness?
Wylan: plants have feelings too?! what is this? now I can't have food!
Jesper: you can eat a rock
Nina: air
Inej: the fabric of space and time
Kaz: chugging a bottle of bleach can solve your problems
Shadow and Bone: A (Meme) Summary
Top ten kaz brekker moments coming in at number 3.5 has to be telling a little girl he’s a monster that hides in her shadows and if she doesn’t go to bed he’ll kill her family and her dog
THAT MOMENT IS AN EASY 5 AND YOU KNOW IT
Based on their friendship dynamic and the fact that Kaz is always fully covered in at least 2 layers of clothing if not 3-4, Jesper would absolutely start making "he's naked " jokes anytime Kaz so much as rolls up his sleeves.
Kaz: *loosens his tie and undoes his collar after a long evening at the Van Eck manor*
Jesper: okay whore

meme idea fresh out of @my-chemical-roman-ce 's brain
Hey guys look at this oddly specific meme I made
Ok so Headcanon that Jesper made Kaz’s cane.
It didn’t always have the destructive crows head. When he gets it, Kaz tells people it was a commission from a grisha fabrikator on his payroll but the work on the crows eye specifically is very distinctive and doesn’t match the type of work his fabrikator does. Everyone knows this but no one knows where the cane actually came from.
It was a gift from Jesper. One day, Kaz had let Jesper know he knew he was grisha. He told him that he would keep his secret but it would be best for Jesper to practice with his powers. To keep as an ace up his sleeve, if you will.
Jesper gets an idea and pulls out his revolver, dropping two bullets out of the chamber and into his waiting palm. He turns his back to Kaz momentarily and focuses, morphing the bullets into a set of crows head cuff links. He turns to hand them to Kaz, absolutely glowing.
Kaz looks at them for a minute before taking them and putting them on. He’s worn them every day since. That night Jesper asks if he could look at Kaz’s cane and makes some modifications to it. Trick it out a bit if you will. Kaz is reluctant because it /works/ but Jesper promises he won’t change anything but the aesthetics of the cane and promises that if he doesn’t like it, he will fix it.
He brings it to Kaz the next morning.
He doesn’t have to fix it.
