Final posting

Well this tumblr project is over and I can say that happily. Maybe it was the technology involved or the self-blogging skills I felt I lacked but I am happy the tumblr project is over and I never have to self blog again. Don't get me wrong it was a very fun and novel way to get the information together, it was just different! On reflection I think a overall theme would have helped me greatly with tumblr as I found it hard to think of what to upload here. I understand that the same thing could have been accomplished as a normal essay but probably would not have been as much fun and the originality would have been lacking.

School contexts

If I had to think about my schooling in adolescence I would have to say that environment used a authoritarian strategy of class management. Could this just be because of the view adolescents have of the world around them? With my son in a special needs class I understand that this type of approach may be needed to keep him safe, yet I would not prefer this style of class management for my daughter who has more capabilities.

Student needs

As a mother of a special needs child I understand the resources that will be needed to educate him during his adolescent years. Resources made available to children and adolescents are dependent on the requests made by parents and teachers. Assessing needs and possible resources is the best way to ensure adolescents receive the most from education opportunities.

School approaches

As many these days I am a firm believer in the Constructivist approach to teaching our children. A student-led approach involves the student more and lets them create their learning and problem solve on a greater scale.

The teacher-centred approach is an approach mostly used in over-populated classes and produces mixed results dependent on the student approach to this style of teaching.

Cyber bullying is rampant these days, and the internet allows it to be anonymous bullying as well, which can make the comments much worse!

Peers

Peer groups are mostly influencial during adolescent years. I myself was not a good judge of peer groups and so try to control the peer groups of my own children. I’m sure that ‘control’ will backfire once my children enter adolescence, so hopefully I will try another way by then.

Within my own peer group I was never really sure of myself. If I had to put a label on it I would say I was one of the “Average” children, while my siblings were “Popular” children. I guess I could have been popular by association hahahaha

Working parents

I grew up in a household where the Father worked and the Mother stayed home with the children. When I was an adolescent I thought this would be the structure of my home when I had a family myself. The way things are in our economy today, both myself and my husband have to work. I notice the differences in my children’s upbringing and the upbringing I had as a child in my parent ‘s home. The parent-child engagement is much less in my home but I believe in quality of time being more important than quantity of time.

Birth order in my own family

How birth order affects adolescent’s personality and behaviours has always interested me. I am the oldest child of 8 children. On my mother’s side I am the oldest of 3 half siblings. On my father’s side I am oldest of 2 half siblings and 3 step siblings. I have always relished in my role as the “serious and dominant” sibling. As one whole family the roles of the youngest and middle children have not resembled the standard description of middle and youngest children. However when I split the siblings into mothers/fathers side the ‘”negotiators” and “charmers” become more apparent. So once again environmental factors influence adolescents.

Thinking back to my adolescence I would say that the parenting style of my parents was Authoritarian, and yet as a parent myself now I would say my parenting style is Authoritative. I wonder if my parents would have thought the same thing about their parents? Is this an example of adolescent thinking about authority figures?

Ethics and morals

Ethics and morals may be influenced by parents and a adolescents upbringing up until the adolescent reaches a point and makes a choice to either conform with parents beliefs or decide what it is that they really believe independent of the parents beliefs.

Moral development-Cultural perspectives

Do the cultural effects of the egalitarian motive surprise you?

No, in fact I see many indigenous cultures acting in a similar way around the world.

Do you think other cultures adopt similar frameworks?

I find collectivist cultures may have a similar perspective. Indigenous cultures tend to act in a way that benefits the collective rather than the individual. The belief that all are equal is closer to being true in these cultures than more western cultures. True to these cultures adolescents would also conform to their beliefs, putting others first and caring for the elderly and the young etc.

Moral development

I believe morals just like attitudes, beliefs, gender roles, and sexual attitudes are greatly influenced by a teens upbringing including environmental and cultural factors. We quite often mimic behaviours and thoughts of the parents we see as successful humans.

As Kohlberg describes moral reasoning is based on the 3 levels below as a mixture of cognitive development and internal factors(values and morality) and external factors(standards and rewards/penalties).

I see the external factors as things that are influenced by parents and upbringing. However I also see the internal factors as something influenced by the external factors, so in a roundabout way are also influenced by parents and upbringing.
