My complete van Gogh painting.
Painting Vincent van Gogh
Week 11:
If you have seen my work before, you would know that I typically stick to ink or pencil drawings. I haven’t had much exposure to painting with acrylics or water paint. However, in my Studio Art class, we began a new project, transitioning from printmaking to painting with acrylic paint. We were giving a book with a number of van Gogh painting from which we choose one that we wanted to recreate. Instead of creating our own painting, we are recreating a master painter’s work so we understand the process in creating a painting. In doing this, you learn that painting is an extensive process that can be simple or complex. My painting is a recreation of Vincent van Gogh’s “Wheat Field With Cypresses”. I chose this painting because it has a lot of pastel colors that form a nice landscape scenery. The book that the painting was taken from contained wax sheets that already had a tracing of the painting. The wax sheet was covered with graphite then taped over a canvas so it could be traced. The book also contained steps to follow to paint the picture. It advised what type of sized brushes should be used and the colors that should be used. The instructions were good to get a start on the painting but were not the best to follow step by step. The instructions were somewhat confusing and easy to get lost in. After a while, I started making my own path to finishing the painting. So far, I’ve done a pretty good job. It will take me about one more week to complete the rest of the painting. Until then, I will post updates of my work so stay tuned!
Attached is Vincent van Gogh’s actual painting.
Mental Health Awareness
Week 10:
I created the piece above to bring awareness to mental health. I chose to do a visual advertisement because of my interest in art and because images have the power to carry influential messages. The purpose of the image was to bring awareness to the fact that alcoholics do not look a certain way, which is a stereotype upheld by society. This piece was apart of a portfolio made up of three medium that made an argument about a mental health issue. I chose to combat the negative and discriminatory stigma of alcoholism because it is a major deterrent for a person's decisions to seek treatment. I found interest in this issue because of a book I read called “Drinking: A Love Story”. After researching the issue, I became dedicated to being apart of the solution and creating a powerful piece.
When people think of alcoholism, they tend to associate alcoholics with the skid row habitué. We imagine someone staggering clutching a paper bag, or a lonely person at a bar being rowdy and uncontrollable. However, while some of these are true, they are negative in the sense that those suffering from alcoholism will get delayed treatment because they don’t see themselves in a bad enough position. Alcoholism can go unnoticed for a number of years in cases like this.
In planning this piece, I saw it important to keep it simple and make it look professional. I referred to an online source that gave professional advice on advertisement techniques. The artwork wasn’t extremely hard to do it just took a lot of time. After the drawing, I used Adobe Photoshop to add the text. I’m not an expert with photoshop but, knowing the basics got me by.
The negative and discriminatory stigma of alcoholism is the greatest deterrent to a person’s deciding to seek help for their mental illness. #alcoholicsanonymous #alcoholism #alcoholicproblems #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalhealthawareness
Scary Hours
Week 9:
Drizzy season has returned. Toronto’s star rapper Drake recently surprised the music world with the released of two new songs in an album titled “Scary Hours”. On January 19 just before midnight, the rapper released "God's Plan" and "Diplomatic Immunity" after teasing us with several snippets and previews over the past couple of weeks. The songs are individually unique. The first song “God’s Plan”, is platformed on a playful beat produced by Noah “40” Shebib, Yung Exclusive, Boi-1da, and Cardo. It is noticeably upbeat and has a simple melody and lyrics. The track was thought to feature Trippie Red, but for unknown reasons, he was removed from the song. On the other hand, "Diplomatic Immunity" has a more orchestral feel, with strings and a piano line. This song has a laid-back feel that reminds me of his earlier release “Pound Cake” with Jay Z back in 2013.
These songs mark Drake’s first new solo songs since he dropped “Signs” in June 2017 and his first album since the drop of “More Life” in March of 2017. This release has me excited s for what else is to come from the music world in 2018.
Winter Carnival
Week 8:
Every year, my school carries out an event called “Winter Carnival”. It is a week-long event where academic teams battle against each other in a series of contests such as laser tag, dodgeball, trivia, and more. Teams also have to pick a theme (Disney, Las Vegas, Camping) that they will use to make a poster, decorate their team area, decorate a cake, and do a lip sync to. In the end, a winning team is chosen based on points collected from each event, and the team’s blood, sweat, and tears are rewarded with bragging rights. My primary role in Winter Carnival is to design and make the team poster with the help of other students. It is a role I put a lot of effort into because it earns my team a lot of points and requires a lot of creativity. This year, my team’s theme was camping. The planning of the poster began with brainstorming all the things that could be illustrated onto a poster to best show that theme. I found inspiration in activities done at camp such as fishing, kayaking, ropes courses, bonfires, etc, and wanted to include them on the poster. There was also a camp logo created for my team that would make a unique addition to the poster. After planning the poster came the day when making the poster began. The official day for poster making was a Sunday but I got started a day earlier as a result of past experiences with running out of time to finish. But, even with a head start,, it took my group and I all the time we were allotted to finish. Working on this project was a wonderful experience. It was amazing to see how much my group was able to accomplish together and how hard everyone worked to finish.

Recent Work
Week 7:
Following my contour-line drawing project, I started a new project in my Studio Art class that deals with printmaking. The new project entails making a linocut. Linocut is a printmaking technique similar to woodcut. The project started off with looking at examples of linocuts on Google Images. It was interesting to see how simple or intricate pieces can be. I also saw that pieces that ranged in color complexity. As a class, for our first print, we would be limited to only using one color, a color of our choice. I also decided to create something in the middle of being simple and complicated; a butterfly. I found inspiration in a picture I found and chose it as a model for my creation. The first step to every project we do is to create a rough sketch of the piece in our sketchbook. Following the preliminary sketch, I was given the material I would make the linocut out of. It was a sheet of a rubber. Carving the image out of the rubber sheet requires using a small handheld tool that has different sized nibs for different purposes. After creating another sketch of the butterfly on the rubber sheet came the long and tedious job of carving. It was previously what I was most excited for however, that enthusiasm faded after realizing how laborious carving was. My linocut is still a work in progress. I have about 2 days until I do my first print. I will be posting pictures of my progress so stay tuned.
