following the war, rey takes to traveling the galaxy for some time, not only having experienced the loss of friends but also, a loss of self, having nearly believed palpatine’s lie that he was her family –- before being forced to relive the reality of her parents’ abandonment and fully confront the truth of who she was, or wasn’t. ﹙ see these posts for more on those t/ros divergences. ﹚ she helps rebuild communities torn asunder by war and the first order, while guiding force sensitives as best she can for how little she feels she truly knows of the sheer depths of the force. she helps secure safe shelter and guardianship for orphans like herself, leaving behind ways of contacting her just as she does for all those she comes across. in doing all of this, however, the millennium falcon is recognized more and more by han and chewbacca’s old rivals and enemies, and so rey sets it down somewhere for safekeeping and finds a ship of her own. ﹙ it’s very likely she parks it on modesta, therefore lending credence as to why she returns, but depending on plot or partner, she could hand over the reigns to someone else, etc. ﹚
it’s difficult to adjust, ridden with guilt as she is to ground such a sentimental ship –- but it also isn’t hers, and once she stumbles upon what eventually becomes her ship, those feelings ease. the tachi is very much a scavenger’s ship ; in fact, it reminds rey of her old speeder, top - heavy and ungainly thing that it is, with personal touches that respond only to her ﹙ in much the same way that her old speeder wouldn’t start without her fingerprint, shocking anyone who attempted to anyway. ﹚ its exterior similarly has russet - colored siding and panels in slightly mismatched shades, as if installed at different times from different sources. the ship is indeed a labor of love, with most of that refurbishing work done by rey herself, not an inch of it she doesn’t know by heart.
its top heaviness gives it some stature when grounded, but uniquely it can collapse into a more streamlined shape, redistributing said heaviness in a way that was far too ambitious a task to pull off on such a small scale as her speeder ﹙ think like the transport leia comes out of in t/fa, but larger and longer. ﹚ it’s possible that this takes months, maybe even more than one cycle to complete this, meaning she could have been working on the tachi while still flying the falcon. once completed though, the ship can also travel low across the ground in much the same way her speeder once could rather than needing to always take to the skies ; and just like her speeder, it’s designed to float even while the thruster engine is shut off, powerful repulsor lifts remaining on at all times.
rey’s ship is named for @tachiisms’ siri tachi.
