Associative Editing + Stancy
In film, the practice of connecting scenes or images based on their symbolic or metaphorical meanings is called associative editing (or, more broadly, this is a literary device called juxtaposition).
When two shots are paired together, each one reshapes how the other is understood. They add meaning to each other.
This is a common storytelling technique, and the writers of Stranger Things use it extensively in relation to the love triangle.
→ Read this post for a compelling example of how it's used in s2.
In s4 and s5, most of Steve and Nancy's scenes are either together or placed sequentially one after another. This has an intentional subconscious effect on the audience - we begin to associate these characters with each other. And the specific contents of each scene add additional layers of meaning.
Even though they're apart in most of s5 so far, Nancy and Steve are still connected by both scene composition and their shared problem-solving drive. They're working in tandem and operating on the same wavelength. They're a team. They're connected. They're so f*cking endgame.
"Where are you going?!" "To get them the hell out of there!"
