New work @ Never Underestimate a Monochrome

On the rare occasion that I receive an email about my work from someone I don't know, I always like to ask how he/she happened to come upon it and then decided to contact me. And truth be told, it's one of those questions I ask because I'm wishing for a very specific answer...

I once spent a long afternoon writing and re-writing a very short text for my website persuading people to contact me. It should have been simple enough: provide an email and maybe a sentence saying something about buying a print. But for no good or relatable reason, I had this image/situation in my head that day and needed a place to fasten it down with words. (This must have been around the time that I had read and was provoked by Félix Fénéon's "Novels in Three Lines" )

So when Mariángeles Soto-Díaz emailed me about participating in her new collective project, Never Underestimate a Monochrome, I was excited to read that she liked the Contact Page! 

A double thank-you, then, to Mariángeles for allowing me to contribute to this amazing project and for reading that damn paragraph.

"Installation Views" @ Caesura Gallery

A further development of my "Installation Views" project is currently on view at Caesura Gallery. I've included collages of the source images that the viewer removes in order to access my photographs, a process in concert with the one I undertook in order to examine installation view pictures as something conceivably more than documentary.

"Shifting" @ IAO

Several prints from the series "Horror Vacui" will be on display as part of the group exhibition, "Shifting," at IAO Gallery in Oklahoma City (opening reception on Sat. July 14, 6-8pm). The show is curated by Tiffany Barber and 

"features new and existing work by seven Oklahoma-based artists working in drawing, performance, sound, installation, video and photography, including Angela Piehl, Tara Najd Ahmadi, Sherwin R. Tibayan, Jalisa Haggins, Eyakem Gulilat, May Yang, and Angela Renee Chase."

Installation Views @ Mainsite Contemporary

The University of Oklahoma MFA Thesis Show is currently on view at Mainsite Contemporary Art. The project I'm exhibiting is a series of 9 images called Installation Views (Mainsite). For this project, no physical work will be shown inside the gallery. Instead of using the physical space to frame the work, my thesis project is viewable in its entirety on their website as a simple blog post. 

In fact, the only remaining physical evidence is the collateral production created by the gallery itself, namely the promotional and title cards that introduce and provide access to the series.

Congratulations to all my friends and colleagues who are exhibiting! I've really enjoyed the last three years.

Artist Residency @ The Center for Photography

I am extremely excited to announce that I've been selected for an artist residency this summer at The Center for Photography at Woodstock! The program was recently listed as one of the top 20 artist residency programs in the United States.

In addition to working on and completing some projects during my stay there, I'm looking forward to meeting and conversing with the other artists selected and the staff of CPW.

Today I'm beginning the second phase of The Histograms project: freely distributing the images and information for others to work with, manipulate, and re-purpose.

The site is now online with the files available for download and a selection of my own interpretations to get the ball rolling.

"Impacting Contemporary Culture Through Curatorial Practice"

The first of three public lectures for this year's OVAC Writing & Curatorial Fellowship begin tomorrow. Lead mentor Shannon Fitzgerald will moderate a panel comprised of Elizabeth Dunbar, Dana Turkovic, and Hamza Walker.

Afterwards, this year's fellows will take part in a workshop with the panelists. I'm looking forward to the meetings and discussions.

"Switch" @ XL Art Space

I'm really excited to announce my participation in this show. A version of The Histograms will be on display. I've been in conversation with the curator, Ilari Laamanen, about ways to show the data set because as I've concieved the project, it is meant to be manipulated and reconfigured.

It'll actually be a great opportunity to move the project into the next stage of development: giving away all the information and seeing what people do with the histograms as raw material for constructing new works.

I'm honored and humbled to be showing this project with the amazing works of:

OVAC Writing & Curatorial Fellowship 2012

This past weekend marked the beginning of a year-long regional fellowship I will be participating in that's spearheaded by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. This year's fellows all met—and some for the first time—at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. The fellowship will consist of readings, writings, conversations with mentors from all over the country, and public presentations. The focus will be on the writing and curatorial practices surrounding contemporary art.
