The Grand Chief of Treaty 8 in Alberta says he was âhorrifiedâ to find out Alberta has a policy allowing for the harvesting of organs from children who die in the care of the province.
Treaty 8 Grand Chief Steve Courtoreille said he is upset that First Nations were not made aware of the practice until now.
âHaving just learned of this policy, I am horrified, appalled and, quite frankly, mad as hell that this is happening and that it has been working quietly in the background for so long,â said Courtoreille in a statement.
With an already high number of Aboriginal children in care, a 2013 investigation conducted by the Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald revealed a startling trend in the deaths of children in care in Alberta. The investigation uncovered that while only nine per cent of Alberta children are Indigenous they accounted for 78 per cent of children who have died in foster care since 1999.
âWe have children in care that are dying, and now, we find out that they may be harvesting their organs?â said Courtorielle. âIt is disgusting, they are dying under provincial care, in a provincial system. Last year, we had 20 Aboriginal children die in care, does this policy mean all these kids had their organs removed? What is going on in this province?â
Treaty 8 officials are demanding that First Nations be consulted on the organ donation policy and that it be amended.
Courtoreille said that removing dead childrenâs organs shouldnât be a decision for the province to make. He said the practice needs to stop immediately.
âPart of our culture is that a body must be whole when it goes back to the Creator, not dissected as the government sees fit,â said Courtoreille. âThe problem is that we are not a part of these conversations, instead, the Province just did it. In the 8 years this policy has been in place how many of our children have been sent back missing parts? Honestly, if people arenât shocked by this, then they just arenât listening.
When you make the âhow would people be motivated under communismâ argument, what you are functionally saying âpeople should be coerced into labor by the threat of starvation.â
Isnât capitalist ideology fun?

Is that a fucking bear??? I never really believed bears could run fast. Jesus Christmas.
Holy shit, its like terminator bear
Fun fact, a sprinting bear can run as fast as a galloping horse. Now if they replaced all the horses in the Kentucky Derby with bears, things would get a lot more interesting.
BEAR IS APPROACHING AT ALARMING SPEEDS

Even if women did uptalk more than men, weâve all heard enough uptalk to know that its rising intonation doesnât indicate a question. No oneâs actually confused. So why should anyone have a problem with it? The thing is, this pastime of critiquing womenâs speech is not limited to American English speakers. Itâs easy to find these attitudes in any culture that devalues femininity and women. In Belfast English, stereotypical womenâs speech falls at the end of a sentence, while menâs speech rises before it plateausâbasically, the men are uptalking. And yet Belfast womenâs speech is still perceived as more expressive or emotional, showing that itâs not about their actual intonation at all: Itâs about whose mouth the speech is coming from. (In fact, vocal fry leads to a lower-pitched voice, essentially the opposite of uptalk, and yet somehow thatâs bad when young women do it too.) And thatâs definitely not the only study, and itâs not just gender. Itâs race, itâs class, itâs sexuality, itâs geographic location, itâs many other factors. But linguists have never been able to show anything intrinsically good or bad, authoritative or unconfident, desirable or grating about any kind of pitch, inflection, or vocal quality. Instead, we ascribe those qualities to speech based on whoâs articulating it. Think Black English sounds uneducated? Thatâs probably because you have some racist notions about black people. Does a Southern accent sound unintelligent to you? Their vowels arenât to blameâitâs our stereotypes about people from the South. Think that uptalk makes women sound less authoritative? Maybe thatâs because women are constantly robbed of agency and authority, and we view anything they do or say as less powerful.
Uptalk is OK: Young women shouldnât have to talk like men to be taken seriously. (via brutereason)

White feminism is âMiley can dress however she wants, donât slut shame herâ
Actual feminism is âMiley can dress however she wants but she crossed a line when she started using another culture as a means to rebel and utilized black women and little people as shocking accessories in her music videos and live performancesâ

This is Neerja Bhanot. On September 5, 1986, mere hours before her 23rd birthday, Neerja turned to see 4 heavily-armed terrorists boarding Pan Am flight 73, where she was a flight attendant. She dashed to the cockpit to warn the pilots, but was caught by one of the hijackers, whoâd grabbed her ponytail. Nevertheless, she managed to shout a secret âhijack codeâ to the cockpit crew â who, according to regulations, quickly evacuated, leaving the 400 passengers and 13-man flight crew at the mercy of the 4 enraged terrorists.
With the cockpit crew gone, and Neerja now the most senior crew member on the plane, she took charge. At the orders of the terrorists â who were part of the Libya-backed Abu Nidal Organization â she collected the passports of all the passengers, taking care to hide or destroy the American ones, so the terrorists could not target those passengers.
After 17 hours on board, the terrorists opened fire, at which point Neerja threw open the emergency exit. Instead of saving herself by sliding down the emergency chute, she used her body to shield three escaping children, and died in the process.
Afterwards, she was awarded Indiaâs highest peacetime honor, the Ashok Chakra Award, becoming the youngest recipient in the nationâs history. She was also commemorated on a stamp in 2004.Â
Thatâs right.
