I have such a chip on my shoulder when it comes to Xena because it never gets real respect. Its always undercut with being “cheesy and campy”, which sure it can be, but it’s a 90s tv show. Yet it was so self aware of itself, so meta, so....in tune with their fans for the most part?
Find me another main female character like Xena. Find me one with the growth of Gabrielle. Find me a show that puts these two women together and have them form such a deep and powerful love for each other. A show built around the relationship of these two women, and the relationships they create on their journey together.
The. Action. - thats all on that b/c man is it good.
Xena is literally the REASON so many shows CAN do what they can do, yet are never able to.
Any time some source will talk about it they’ll say something like wow you saw a sword bend, instead of wow Xena is on a constant quest for redemption and when her soulmate is in danger of dying, she’s willing to abandon the greater good shes been fighting for in a desperate attempt to save her and admits her love for her. And they knew it too. They were continually undercut and continued to do their own thing and be the show they wanted to be.
Like its always wild to me how many times are we gonna praise Game of Thrones, when it’s a pretty much a basic fantasy story where women get naked or get r*ped every other episode.
Give the Xena staff the budget of Game of Thrones
This show has such heart and i know I’m completely biased writing this but damn stop overlooking Xena.
