Hello clown tumblr! Me and my husband recently got a rescue and would love some advice since this is our first ever clown. He is a Scare clown Rodeo mix which I know is not ideal for beginners but the person who owned him was very negative and would only agree to give him to us or his sister who has a toddler in the house so to prevent an accident we took him.
He didn't really have a name when we got him but we have been calling him Bubba and he seems to like it. As soon as we got him we took him to the clown vet and they told us that he was badly malnourished and might been kept on a sugar free diet from time to time since he's not developed properly, they also couldn't give us an age since it's hard to tell when he still exhibits loads of honkling behavior. He doesn't know how to hunt at all so for now he's on a diet of fattier bacon, bloody meat and some fresh cotton candy and beans.
For his enclosure he has a room of the house for himself but he also gets to walk freely in the house and our small back yard that's fenced in. I got him a medium size tent for his room but he tore it up badly and I don’t know if that's normal, I've left the tattered tent standing for now since It might just be a scare clown thing. However I was under the belief that Rodeo and Rodeo mixes wanted large areas to run around in but Bubba seems to want to spend his days nesting in dark places like under our bed or in blanket piles in our bed or on the sofa, is this a scare clown thing or should I be worried?
He loves the forest and we take him there on the regular and he loves to poke his little head out from behind trees and stare at you with a with open mouth grin until you notice him. I always give him a surprised gasp or yelp when I see him to encourage him (since he's still very bad at hiding and we see him before he pokes his head out). You should see how happy it makes him, he hops around in little circles and honks and manicly laughs.
He also loves banging old rusty pots and cow bells together and my lovely husband has given up his old leather cowboy hat and some flannels for him (the hat is his favorite and now has notable teeth marks in it from playing and bitting on).
However all this he is sadly very stressed and HATES and I mean HATES kids, any pet larger than a cat and other clowns. He hisses, screeches and growls at them so no clown parks for us but does anyone know how, or if that can be trained away? He also cries and whines as soon as he gets left alone and he gets this stressed every time I go to the bathroom (We both work from home most days) or just go out to get the mail and I don’t know if there's anything I can do to minimize the stress for him.
Bubba is so sweet so if anyone has any tips or info please help I want to give him the best life I can.
