Despite her best efforts, Yelena feels a SMILE tug upon her lips at his words. More often than not, John got under her skin - and NOT in a good kind of way. He annoyed her, fought back, pushed her to her limits and then some but SOMETIMES, when there was no outside force driving them to fight, he could make her BREAK. Just for a moment however, before it was wiped from her face and she dragged her eyes back to the screen. It was EASIER when she didn’t have to look at him. ❝I can DISAPPEAR at the drop of dime. Put hat and sunglasses on you and no one NOTICES, but that THING?❞ She points to the screen and huffs again under her breath. If this really WAS the mission, it was quite a tall order from the Contessa. ❝Bit tougher of sell.❞

“Well,  let’s  just  hope  he  is  like  Bruce  Banner  and  can  revert  back.  Or  else,  well,  you  better  find  a  bigger  hat  for  him.“  John  points  out,  a  signal  with  his  hand  atop  of  his  head  to  signal  a  big  hat.  Not  ideal,  he  knows  it’s  best  to  lay  low  after  everything  that  had  happened  and  this  wouldn’t  help  them,  not  one  bit.  “So  far,  she  just  wants  us  to  surveil  the  security.“  Which  would  be  easy,  it’s  simple  recon  that  even  John,  in  all  of  his  need  for  action,  can  do.  He  is  going  to  therapy  after  all,  and  has  his  own  dog  back  home  that  helps  him  deal  with  the  trauma  and  bad  sleep.  “So  I  guess  I  should  grow  a  beard.“  He  already  has  a  4  o’clock  shadow  but  if  he  wants  to  be  more  unrecognizable,  he  better  grow  one.  “what  do  you  think?“

Eyes DID dart over to him however as he began to sort through the briefing and not even she could act as though she was TOO bored to hear about it. Valentina might have been an odd ball, but her missions were always INTERESTING at least. The kind of thing people wanted to keep UNDER THE TABLE. Which made sense why an ex RUSSIAN SPY and a dishonorable discharged CAPTAIN AMERICA were put up to the test. It was likely no one ELSE wanted them to be on their team, so hey … might as well keep working for those who DID. Yelena huffed softly as John mentioned a “fellow Russian”, and eyes snapped to his through the holographic screen.  ❝Seems a bit too HIGH PROFILE for her tastes. You’d think they’d NOTICE him missing.❞

“NOTHING  WRONG  WITH  A  LITTLE  DREAMIN’.“  He  adds  back,  a  smile  placed  upon  the  soldier’s  lips,  however brief  before  he  focus  on  the  task  at  hand.  Val  had  encourage  him  to  take  a  break  and  he  had  done  so,  but  eventually, she  has  also  shown  up  to  get  back  into  work  and  he  had been  more  than  happy  to  get  into  it.  Even  if  he  and  Yelena are  still  getting  the  hang  of  how  to  work  together.  She annoys  him  equally,  as  just  as  he  realizes  how  easy  it  is to  follow  the  banter  with  her  around.  And,  of  course,  she  is  a  beautiful  woman,  despite  him  dismissing  any  of  those thoughts.  But  somehow,  even  in  their  banter,  they  made  it work  and  perhaps  Valentina  had  thought  so  too.  “Yeah,  as  if a  former  black  widow  related  to  natasha  romanoff  and dishonorable  discharged  soldier  aren’t  high  profile  enough.“  He is  aware  of  the  reputation.  Perhaps,  that’s  what  she  is looking  for,  a  group  of  misfits.  “Maybe  she  is  just  looking to  piss  Thunderbolt  Ross  off.  Or  she  works  for  him.“  Prison break.  or  a  retrieve.  Either  one,  it  seems  they  had  job  to do.

The two of them should NOT get heated over some pieces of clothing. But still … she couldn’t resist just ONE more jab. ❝Yes BLACK is very … slimming.❞ With a smirk, the girl looks down at her nails and pretends to examine them for a moment. As if her words meant NOTHING, but then she shrugs and gives a REAL response to carry on the conversation as if she hadn’t just insulted his NONEXISTANT weight problem. ❝Don’t ask ME. I don’t even know what we’re doing HERE today. She is very … strange lady.❞

“So  you’re  saying  you  been  checking  me  out,  Belova.  Interesting.“  John  snaps  back  with  ease,  hands  reaching  on  the  table  to see  through  the  holographic  technology  what  the  briefing  would be.  Seems  a  pretty  empty  place  for  just  two  people,  which makes  him  think  the  countess  is  recruiting  her  own  little version  of  avengers.  Hard  to  not  look  at  the  evidence  and see  it.  “Yes,  she  is.  Has  a  tendency  to  show  up  when  you least  expect  her.“  In  vacations,  most  likely.  But  hey,  someone  like  John,  very  much  happy  to  go  back  to  work  the  sooner the  better.  “She  wants  to  to  try  and  reach  some  new  guy. Emil  Blonsky,  fellow  russian.“  But  the  images  don’t  show something  like  the  man  the  briefing  photo  show.  It  shows  the Abomination  on  their  screen.  “A  prison  break?  Those  are  fun.“

“THEY  ARE  FROM  THE  SAME  STORE.“  He  adds  up,  shaking  his  head.  Nevermind  how  useful  they  are.  But  really,  he  has  his  variety  of  pockets  on  his  cargo  uniform  pants.  God  bless  Val,  really.  “Yeah  well,  couldn’t  really  be  Captain  America  anymore.“  Had  he  ever  been  that,  really?  It’s  still  too  fresh  and  a  sore  subject  so  he  simply  moves  on  from  the  topic  at  hand.  “I  like  the  black  better.“  Somehow,  suits  him  better.  And  he  is  proud  to  show  it  off.  “Any  news  on  other  recruits  or  Valentina  thinks  this  a  two-people  job?“

“Not  my  idea,  Belova.  All  from  the  brilliant  mind  of  Valentina.“  He  gestures  down  to  the  suit  itself,  leaving  the  helmet  back  on  the  table  as  he  rolls  his  eyes  at  the  teasing.  “At  least  I  have  a  new  suit.  You  have  three  vests  and  they  are  all  the  same.“  He  quips  back,  taking  a  seat  opposite  to  her  chair.  Val  really  had  the  two  of  them  on  a  makeshift  team.  A  recipe  for  disaster  if  you  asked  him.

Like he knew from experience, because after all, who knew better when it came to jumping into the unknown if not him?

NEVER  MEET  YOUR  HEROES  THEY  SAY.  hard  shoes  to  fill,  when  he  stands  before  steve  rogers  himself.  shoes  he  wasn’t  able  to  fill  (  or  was  allowed  to  ).  he  swallows,  somehow,  feeling  like  he  is  being  given  a  pep  talk  by  his  father.  “How  do  you  become  whole  again?  that’s  a  dream.  You  loose  a  part  of  yourself  in  the  war.”  and  that  part  never  comes  back.  Or  when  you  kill.  Not  the  first  time  he  had  done  so,  but  apparently,  one  time  is  all  it  takes  to  get  it  wrong.  “I  took  the  jump  alright.  But  I  don’t  have  someone  to  catch  me  on  the  other  side  anymore.”
