Digital tattoos, a visible record of our online activity, are a growing social problem.
NTT Docomo, which has been hosting smartphone safety classes for younger audiences, exhibited an installation through which visitors experienced the world of the Internet through dazzle camouflage in order to encourage more people to reevaluate the ways in which they communicate.
Tokyo, February 2020. Seen behind watching was exhibited at rooms, an event attracting around 20,000 attendees, mostly young adults. The bedazzled attendees, who have wandered into the world of the Internet, excitedly take pictures and upload them to their social media accounts.
However, there is a one-way mirror in the next room, and the participants realize that all of their actions in the previous room were being observed. Although they were posting on social media to show things to others, they had been unaware that they themselves were being seen as well. Each of us needs to consider and decide how to incorporate new modes of communication into our life.
“Someone could be watching me.”
