— man down,
he can’t help the gentle chuckle that leaves his lips at his friend’s playful words, and he pats the other’s head affectionately. it could have been awkward, had he chosen to take the words the wrong way, but he consciously sets that reaction aside. instead, he interprets it as the friendly jest it is, wrinkling up his nose in response. “i suppose you are, aren’t you?” his voice is warm with laughter as he pokes the other’s very full cheek, the chubbiness of which rather makes the younger male resemble a squirrel with nut-filled cheeks.
“apparently not to you, since you just had to steal half of my fries… how am i supposed to get by on just a burger and half my fries?” he complains playfully, the switching of the channels on the television not bothering him at all. the buzzing startles him for a moment, and he glances around to find its source, soon revealed as wonshik digs out his phone.
“i think you’re going to poison yourself one day, so i have to prevent that as well as i can,” his retort is equally playful, and he reaches for the remote before wonshik goes silent. that silence is unexpected, and he turns to look at his friend, whose face has suddenly paled dangerously, and the words that slip from wonshik’s lips are completely unexpected.
the remote slips from his fingers, horrified eyes meeting wonshik’s. this is a joke, right?
“there’s always food at your place though,” he points out, blinking at the older male with a very cheeky grin, his cheeks bunching up slightly and his eyes crinkling up in the corners and he just laughs casually, very content. their relationship, despite the rocky bit after they ended their very short boyfriend-ship, was one of the things he sought comfort in nowadays considering that jinyoung was MIA for long periods of time and the whole thing of him being undercover in some gang was still making his brain go crazy.
but nothing could compare to this. once the news had broken, wonshik felt like time had stopped and the world had gone still. he barely heard the thud of the remote on the floor when it slipped through taekwoon’s fingers nor the voice in his ear trying to explain to him what had happened.
honestly, he feels rather faint. his legs are trembling, as are his fingers and his whole body practically, his lips parting as if to say something but everything feels rather sluggish at this point and he doesn’t know what’s happening anymore.
this was a prank right?
unearthed secrets ,
there’s something to be said about what the unhealed wounds and constant strain on his body, and that something is that his perception is severely affected by the knife-like agony running through his weakened body. as such, he actually doesn’t notice wonshik’s expression scrunching up in suspicion before it straightens again. he doesn’t notice anything at all, really, and this is very unlike park jinyoung.
(wonshik calls him mom for a reason, after all. and what kind of mom can’t notice the little things in their child? disregarding the fact that of course, kim wonshik is not his child, is not younger than him, is not even related to him at all.)
he takes the pair of chopsticks with a short nod of thanks, holding the bowl quietly. looking at the bowl of rice, he doesn’t think he has the stomach to eat it, half wondering if the rice will leak out of the wounds in his side. the thought is ridiculous and it makes a laugh bubble up between his lips, but he swallows it back down again. pain ripples through him once more and he shudders slightly, the room spinning around him, and he’s just waiting.
waiting for the shoe to fall and for wonshik to spring to his feet and demand what else jinyoung has been lying about. for the truth to come out in torrents (just like his blood, his blood, the water that poured down on his face) – he freezes, breath stilling in his throat and his fingers shake as the chopsticks clatter down onto the table, the bowl of rice landing and rolling slightly.
reddish orange grains spill onto the table and he stares with wide, unseeing eyes at the rice in front of him. water, water, he can’t breathe and he’s choking and everything hurts but – it doesn’t, and he gasps in a shuddering breath of air before his shoulders slump. “s… shikkie,” he whispers at last, and the tears begin to fall, warm and salty and wet on his face. it brings an entirely fresh wave of panic but he fights it, oh, he tries to fight it, because no, he can’t do this now, he can’t.
he’s spent way too much time with jinyoung to not catch all the little signs and tremors the other was giving him, and all he knows is that something is very, very wrong. he doesn’t know what it is, exactly, but he knows that his best friend is injured somehow. the way jinyoung was speaking and moving and even just the way he’s breathing is so completelyoff that wonshik isn’t too sure what to do. he had never been the one to take care of jinyoung, it having always been the other way around. jinyoung was nicknamed mom on his phone and aloud for a reason, and that was because jinyoung was the one who was mothering. not wonshik.
so this is new and kind of awkward but he knows he has to say something. but he has no idea what he should say or what he should do and he’s honestly just at a complete loss, digging into his rice instead. it has to say something about him when he’s actually missed the taste of his mom’s kimchi fried rice, considering he had been eating out or taekwoon would come over and share whatever he had made, or he would go over to taekwoon’s.
the whisper of his name has his gaze shooting upwards, chewing quickly to swallow the mouthful of rice he had taken. the reaction to grab a tissue is automatic and he’s by jinyoung’s side almost immediately, before he even knows that he’s doing it.
“mo – jinyoung,” he corrects himself, quiet and he’s crouching beside jinyoung’s chair, reaching up with the tissue to press it to his cheeks, trying to wipe at the tears that were falling. oh god he has no clue what he’s supposed to be doing right now. does he hug the other? no, it was obvious his best friend was injured somehow and a hug probably wasn’t the best idea. what else was he supposed to do? oh god.
“i’m here,” he ends up murmuring, gentle and warm and steady. “whatever happened … i’m here, okay? i’ll always be here, i promise. you’re home.”

unearthed secrets ,
he jumps on the excuse like a drowning man would to a life preserver, immediately responding with an affirmative noise. it’s not like he would tell the other that he’s in danger of being killed because he might have given away his entire lie under the duress of physical and psychological torture and the hazing nature of morphine.
even sitting down at the table takes more effort than he could have imagined, contracting muscles that shoot pain through his body with every slow movement. he inhales shakily, but he’s careful not to cry out in pain (but his will is so shattered, his fierce determination cracking into pieces). despite his valiant efforts, a soft little whimper does escape his lips as he finally seats himself at the table.
he’s a fool, he realizes, to think that he could have kept this hidden from wonshik. he’s a fool to think he could come home and pretend that everything is okay, to think that he could have kept this hidden until bedtime. he’s a fool, and wonshik must know.
he bows his head silently, and suddenly he just wants to go to sleep, to hide away from the reality, to avoid the confrontation that will surely happen any moment now.
kim wonshik might be naive, and soft and in his own little gang-less bubble but one thing kim wonshik is not is unobservant. he spends a lot of time just watching people – considering his job is pretty boring sometimes, people watching is always fascinating. he used to create little worlds in his mind about the people who regularly came to the book store he works in.
the whine that comes from his best friend has him narrowing his eyes, though he quickly straightens his expression out after. he doesn’t want jinyoung to get defensive too quickly – though now wonshik knows for certain that something is up and that his best friend had most definitely been lying to him for the past (perhaps, long) while.
scooping two bowls of rice, he places the spatula down and heads over to the table. there are a few sides that taekwoon had brought over a while ago, just the pickled radishes and more kimchi, and he places the less full bowl in front of jinyoung, handing him a pair of chopsticks afterwards.
he’s definitely going to get to the bottom of this, but he’s also mildly concerned that jinyoung seemed to be thinner, more gaunt than he usually was. having no idea what the hell in the world was going on, he half contemplates texting taekwoon for advice, unsure of how to approach this. he just knows he’ll have to start talking soon – but, he’s going to let jinyoung eat first. that was the more important thing right now.
— man down,
he can’t help but roll his eyes again when he sits down, squinting at the other. “so you stole a fry, did you?” he asks wryly, already knowing the other and his habits far too well. passing the emerald green bottle to the other, he arches an eyebrow silently at the other’s excitement, smirking a little bit. “well, what does it look like?” he shifts so he’s more comfortable for wonshik to lean against, the both of them long used to this kind of compromise and position, humming softly to himself, very content – that is, until wonshik steals yet another fry from him.
“shikkie!” he scolds, glaring at the other as he grumbles, taking the last fry and eating it before his friend can steal that one, too. rather disgruntled, he accepts a bite of the other’s burger, apparently a peace offering for eating pretty much all of his fries. he shakes his head at the other’s words, the bump to his cheek making him want to smile, but he tries to hold it back so he can properly chastise the younger male.
“get food with you? more like get half a meal with you, since you ate all of my fries, you monster.” he mutters before he sighs a little bit, amused nonetheless. “i’ve told you so many times, you don’t have to keep eating that rice, it’s going to kill you one day.” his voice is wry as he shakes his head, unscrewing the bottle that holds his iced latte and taking a gulp.
he grins, knowing his friend wasn’t actually angry at him for stealing his fries and he bumps his nose against taekwoon’s cheek again, squishy. “but i’m your monster ~” wonshik singsongs happily, chuckling to himself as he pulls away to finish off the last, large, bite of his burger, shoving the entire piece into his mouth and he chews rather contentedly. he realizes a bit too late that perhaps that wasn’t the best thing to say to the other, considering that they had just started and ended a relationship and were finally past the awkward stages. but it was too late to take it back, and he ends up just continuing to lounge there, hoping that that wasn’t the weirdest thing to say.
“but the burger was filling ~” he protests, chuckling and he turns his attention back to the television, flipping through the channels again to find something interesting, entirely unsure of what there was to watch. it’s a comfortable silence between them, and he doesn’t mind this at all.
there’s a buzzing coming from somewhere near his foot, and wonshik groans as he fumbles to sit up and look for his phone. the buzz pattern is one he had jokingly made for jinyoung and he would honestly recognize it anywhere. “you love getting food with me hyung, because you’re worried i’m going to gorge myself to death on kimchi fried rice,” he points out, finally finding phone and swiping to answer the call. “sup?”
going quiet for a moment, his eyes widen before his face goes pale. “jinyoung got shot?!”
Ravi Moments – Star1
— man down,
he rolls his eyes playfully at his friend’s denial, and he ruffles his hair in revenge, his lips quirking up at the corners. “we’ll see about that,” he replies with a small smirk on his lips. he doesn’t actually think that the other would have finished his drink, there being nothing really special about the drink, but he does suspect that he’ll come back to quite a few less fries, no matter how long he’s gone. of course, if he returns fairly quickly, he still might have a few left to eat.
as he’d suspected, he finds his drink sitting innocently on the counter – definitely not empty, and therefore almost certainly not wonshik’s fault. a small smile overcomes his lips as he reaches into the fridge for a bottle of iced matcha latte that he’d made in advance and put into the fridge to chill. it’s not unusual for him to have various chilled cafe drinks in his fridge, preferring those to the carbonated pops other people tend to keep.
glancing back at the couch, he sighs rather loudly, attempting to make it loud enough for wonshik to hear, seeing his friend’s body sprawled over the entirety of the couch. “you better not be stealing more fries, kim wonshik!” he calls out indignantly as he finishes the rest of his drink and grabs himself an iced latte bottle before heading back towards the couch.
“i’m definitely not stealing more fries,” he emphasizes the plural on purpose, having only stolen one fry so far, though he had definitely been about to. rolling onto his back, he’s put the burger down on the coffee table to get into this position and he’s comfortable now, peering up at his friend and he’s wondering what he’s holding. wonshik sits up, chuckling to himself and resumes his slouched position on his side of the couch.
“wait are those premade lattes?” he raises his eyebrows in amusement, grinning and he’s rather excited. he had somehow forgotten that that was a thing that his friend did and he scoots over slightly more to give taekwoon room on the couch, before leaning into him again -- and then proceeding to steal another french fry in the process of picking up the last little bit of his burger.
offering another bite to the older male before finishing it off, he gives a groan as he leans back against the couch and half against the other with a content sigh, patting his stomach. “thanks for getting food with me hyung,” he says softly, booping his nose into taekwoon’s cheek with a grin, scrunching it up playfully afterwards. “i almost forgot what normal food tasted like.”
unearthed secrets ,
he laughs a little bit, the sound short – it hurts his stomach to laugh too hard, the wounded muscles contracting uncomfortably. “it’s okay. i’ll leave you something you can do,” he jokes, still not wanting to move too far away from wonshik. it had taken most of his strength to get home and to steel his face and mind through the pain he’s already endured for what he thinks is at least a week. he’s not sure. time has been hazy and he literally has no idea what has been going on for the past while.
“mm… i think things are going to get a little messy, so.” he whispers gently, swallowing slightly and he really, really hopes that his best friend isn’t going to find out about everything. but then again, thinking logically, is it possible that he’s somehow kept everything from wonshik these past four years?
a weak smile curves up his lips and he reluctantly lets go of wonshik as the other turns away, schooling his face once more but it takes more strength than he thinks he really has. “of sorts, y-yeah.” he manages before he turns, moving towards the kitchen table. he’s moving slower than usual and he thinks that wonshik must know something – the other’s movements are gentle, much more so than he’d expect.
“messy? is something happening with the gangs? the news has been crazy lately,” he replies easily, shrugging and he’s very far removed from anything gang related in the city. the only gang related thing he had ever encountered was the time he went to lotte world with his friends and broke his ankle as he fell over from the force of the explosions.
but that was just a bad memory – and that was it. a memory. he has the crutches stored away in his closet to prove it wasn’t something he had just dreamed up but it’s not something he really thinks about on a day to day basis. he’s not too worried, honestly. his life is the bookstore, graffiti at night, and whatever else he does on his free time. and none of those things were gang related. plus he was friends who a handful of spd officers so he honestly wasn’t too concerned at all.
the sound of jinyoung’s voice – weak with what he thinks must be pain of some sort, so different from his usual, hyperactive, bright voice – is what’s giving the entire thing away. wonshik narrows his eyes slightly as he pauses in his scooping of the kimchi fried rice into two bowls to watch the other limp slowly towards the kitchen table.
something is up, he thinks to himself, and he’s no detective, but he’s going to get to the bottom of it.
well, he will. after jinyoung eats. and maybe he’ll make the other rest up too.
— man down,
he grumbles something to himself about how the other had flat out ignored his question, and he wonders if that means that wonshik had finished off his drink and then guiltily thrown it away. which would explain why it is nowhere to be seen, but at the same time, he knows that his friend prefers to steal his fries (as is proven by his current behavior) as opposed to the ordinary drinks that come with the combos.
“sure,” he decides quietly, shaking his head in vague amusement. he supposes there’s no reason to say no, since they are his fries after all. leaning over, he bites into the burger quietly, his expression content as he nods slightly. “… i should do that with the rest of my fries,” he muses softly to himself. “then you can’t steal anymore…”
the last sentence has a definite hint of teasing to it, and he smiles at the other with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes before he shifts. “i’m going to get something else to drink – that is, if you really did finish my drink,” he nudges the other with a small smirk. “want anything?”
“i didn’t finish your drink!” wonshik pouts at the older male and he nudges his friend with a laugh, amused and he’s teasing back. “are you sure you didn’t forget it in the kitchen?” he had, of course, stolen a sip or two from taekwoon’s drink but he had certainly not finished it off. the pout that had disappeared from his lips earlier reappears at the teasing about the fries but he laughs it off, amused and he waves an idle hand.
his own drink, of course, is sitting on the coffee table before them, three quarters empty. “actually, could you actually grab me a drink? anything is fine,” he hums, pushing at his friend and he grins when the older vacates his spot -- which he promptly tips himself into, taking over the entire couch with his height and he chuckles to himself, content.
pulling out his phone to check if anything good to watch is on, he hums quietly as he scrolls through the options before deciding on a show and placing his phone onto the table and picking up the remote instead and stealing another fry for good measure.
unearthed secrets ,
his cheek rests against the other’s shoulder and he exhales softly, his arms tightly wound around the other’s waist. it’s secure, he thinks to himself, wonshik is always secure, wonshik is always steady, always home. he thinks that even if they had to move, it would be okay, as long as wonshik is there, because wonshik provides the feeling of safety that dwellings themselves don’t provide.
it sounds odd even when he thinks it, but there’s just something about a friendship that endures years and trials that is reassuring, somehow, especially in the tumultuous life that he leads. “you should really let me teach you how to cook more,” he murmurs softly, his eyes closed as he focuses on the breathing of the other male, matching his own inhales to that steady rhythm. “i might be able to be home more often, soon.”
of course, that isn’t necessarily a good thing, considering the circumstances that are floating around at the moment. he’s been thinking he needs to ask to be pulled because hemight have let something go in the haze of the past week or so. he doesn’t remember much from it, after all.
“okay,” he agrees softly, “let’s eat.” his stomach makes a soft noise of protest, his cheeks flushing in embarrassment.
“you’re just jealous my kimchi fried rice is better than yours,” he teases, keeping his voice light and playful, trying not to act too concerned, knowing that jinyoung would be more defensive that way and he just keeps things casual. honestly speaking though, he really wouldn’t mind learning how to cook more dishes, just for his own sake. “oh, really? how come?”
he’s been increasingly curious about jinyoung’s job, considering he still didn’t know much about what his best friend did there. he had never heard about cops having to work major overtime hours, and the fact that the other male rarely came home, he honestly wondered where he stayed. did he just rent a hotel? or perhaps he just stayed at the police station the entire time, in one of the offices? no matter how he looked at it, it just didn’t seem to make any sense.
“did you finally decide to take a vacation?” wonshik laughs, shifting and he turns off the stove. “go sit and i’ll bring you some rice, okay?” he tries to usher the other gently towards their kitchen table, needing to grab bowls and utensils but he definitely knew his friend was in pain, trying his best to maneuver him without jostling him too much.
— man down,
he glances at the other male with an eyebrow slowly arching, obviously mildly incredulous. “you ate all your fries, and now you’re stealing mine.” he deadpans, although they both know he doesn’t really care – he has far too big of a soft spot for wonshik. it’s one of the promises he’d made – no matter whether they’re dating or not, wonshik will always hold a special place in his heart. he’d sworn to always be there for the male, whether it’s through regular hang-outs, or to cook food when wonshik is sick and tired of kimchi fried rice, or just to listen. especially with jinyoung spilling the truth recently; he’s surprised that the other male isn’t angrier at his best friend for all the lies over the years.
“but, yes. i do think it’ll be good. aren’t there gimmicks for that kind of thing, anyways?” he asks curiously, blinking at the younger male before he changes the channel on the television carelessly. stretching out a little bit, he takes a big bite of his burger before he blinks at the other. “did i leave my drink in the kitchen?”
”shhh,” he doesn’t deny that he had stolen the older male’s fries because he had run out of his own -- he couldn’t help that this burger place’s fries were amazing. perhaps he should’ve gone the extra mile and upsized his combo instead of just getting a regular one. but it was too late now, so he was settling for stealing his friend’s fries.
currently he’s working very hard on being himself again -- with jinyoung’s secret coming out of the bag a while ago, he’s been trying to restructure his life with that knowledge in his brain. he wasn’t sure how to feel about the whole my-best-friend-has-been-undercover-in-a-gang-this-whole-time thing still and wonshik is trying not to let it affect him.
“want a bite?” he offers once he’s had one himself, chewing, and he thinks that fries in burgers should definitely be a thing that he does more often and now he knows why everyone in movies seem to do it as well.
— man down,
he’s simply grateful that after all the mess-ups and the times he’s ruined something perfectly good, that wonshik is still here next to him. they’d tried their hand at dating, and that had fallen flat fairly quickly when it was clear that although he held a deep-rooted affection for the bookstore clerk he’d known for years, it wasn’t enough to overcome the love still in his heart for his ex-girlfriend. wonshik had accepted it all with grace, nodding slightly and taekwoon had felt horrifically guilty at the fact that the other was clearly upset, but after a week or two of being a little more distant, it felt as though they had settled right back into their rhythm again.
“i don’t actually know,” he comments quietly as he eats a fry quietly, the television playing some show that neither of them are apparently familiar with. the weight of wonshik against his side is comforting, and he’s glad that he hasn’t lost this friendship amidst the wreckage of his love life. “should we change the channel?”
the week or two after they had gotten together and consequently broken up, their entire relationship had lasted about two weeks in total, he had been a bit out of it. he had liked the older male, quite a lot, but the relationship hadn’t fully felt right to him either. their friendship, their long, very long, friendship had clicked in all the right places but once they had upped it to the next level? it hadn’t seemed to fit. so yes. he had been sad over the whole thing but he understood.
(they both knew that no matter how much taekwoon seemed to have gotten over his relationship with bomi, he would never be totally over it. and wonshik understood. he knew that the two of them were probably still meant to be -- which brought him to the part of it where he didn’t understand why they weren’t together. but that was another problem for another time.)
“mm,” is his answer, stealing another fry from his friend and he reaches for another few to shove into his burger, intrigued. “probably ... do you think this will taste good?”
— man down,
( @taekxmi )
dinner is always nice with company -- and especially if the food isn’t his kimchi fried rice. he wonders absently if it was possible for one to become allergic to something if they ate it too much. probably not right?
they had literally grabbed takeout from some nice burger place -- his fault, because he had been craving some sort of western food and they had had chicken just a few days prior -- and he lounges comfortably on taekwoon’s couch, half leaning against the older male. despite them having figured out everything that had been weird, feelings wise, between them, that didn’t mean that wonshik was going to be letting up on his touchy-feely affectionate side anytime soon. he reaches out to steal a fry from his friend, quiet as he gazes at the television. “what even is this show, hyung?”
wait who's this ... (aka i’m so sorry for my super long hiatus bUT i think i found his muse again and school is over so IT’S TIME TO RP!!!!)
aka pls plot with my fluffy marshmallow ~ i’m going to be dropping all paras prior to this post considering most of them are long overdue and whatnot. (besides jinyoung’s bc that one is important). i think the easiest way to plot is over here on my twitter if that’s okay with y’all but i will check his account periodically (hopefully) as i currently have nothing to reply to??
OR like this and i’ll pop into your ims the next time i’m here :>
quick facts about wonshik: he knows nothing at all about gangs, he works at a bookstore, he’s a famous graffiti artist (signs all of his work under the name reverie), he’s a smol/tol bun?
wontaek in star1 + cosmopolitan
* a cup of coffee,
he stares at the other and he simply sighs, and while he is very concerned for the other’s health, there’s still nothing that he can do about it, if wonshik chooses to ignore him. the most he can do, in the end, is offer the other advice and hope that perhaps, the younger male will choose to listen to someone.
“lean against me, at least?” he shakes his head a bit, moving to stand by the other’s side and if the other had purposely not brought his crutches, there’s very little to be done, except to try and at least support wonshik’s still-healing ankle. “you should really at least use one…” he chastises gently but that’s the last he says on the topic and he just wraps an arm around the other’s waist.
“come on, let’s go for my car.” his voice is quiet. “what do you feel like eating, birthday boy?” a teasing tone colors his voice, “now that you’re twenty-three, have your tastes changed any?” he jokes, and over the past five years, he’s learned that jinyoung, wonshik’s best friend, can’t always get the day off to spend with the younger male, so he’s taken to filling in that gap, at least on this special day.
sighing, he just really doesn’t like crutches, he agrees to lean against the other for the remainder of the day, resolving to maybe carry one crutch around if that was better. slinging his arm around the older’s shoulders, he makes a soft sound, quietly hobbling out of the cafe and it seems his ankle is a bit stiff now that he had sat for a while.
“okay, but how come you make twenty three sound like such a bad thing,” he complains, playful as they slowly walk to taekwoon’s car and he heaves a relieved sigh when they reach it. “but also, i don’t think my tastes change just because it’s my birthday, hyung,” he points out with a soft chuckle, amused and he removes his arm from the older’s shoulders, adjusting his bag so he could climb into the passenger seat.
once he’s seated securely in the passenger seat, wonshik glances over at his friend, raising an eyebrow. “i haven’t had sushi for a while … i’ve been surviving off of my kimchi fried rice and take out and delivery pizza,” he laughs, amused and he wonders if the other is up for some japanese food. “you down?”
