How to buy Bathroom Lights. IP Ratings Explained

Are you redesigning your bathroom?

The standard bathroom furniture – the bath, toilet, sink and shower – are all relatively easy to source. You just need to select a style and ensure the size matches your physical space.

However, choosing lighting for your bathroom always appears to be so complicated. Did someone say something about IP rating? You might ask yourselves what the heck that means. But do not worry. We are here to demystify bathroom light selection.

Consider your bathroom in the terms of zones. We have found you this helpful diagram to explain the zones to you. Where are you considering putting lights? Select the relevant zone and then you can see which IP rating you need.

Because of the high chance that the lights will be exposed to moisture, you should only put lights in your bathroom that have been designed for it. Also, to ensure you are not at risk, always ensure a qualified electrician installs your bathroom lights.

Inspirational Study Spaces - Traditional, Modern Black & White and Nautical Blue.

The kids have all gone back to school and I suddenly found myself stuck in traffic this week. So now is the time to give yourself back some ‘me time’ and relish in the peace and quiet.

If you work from home, are currently studying or engrossed in your own personal project. You will find yourself spending as much time in your study as you do in your living room. On those days where you feel uninspired – or have the dreaded writer’s block – why do you force yourself to stare at blank walls?

Practically, an office space or study is just a desk and a table lamp. However, in reality, it is a fantastic opportunity to create a space that inspires you.

Decoratively, you should be taking as much care for it as you would with your bedroom or living room. Use it as a space to display photographs, pictures that inspire you or a well-designed mood board.

My mood board is just an A1 pin board decorated with scraps of material from previous art projects and momentous pinned on top. However, this burst of colour when my mind is blank is so useful to set my mind back on track. I'm definitely considering adding some fairy lights or a few picture lights to add some low level lighting.

Inspiration for your inspirational space

Idea 1 – Luxurious traditional.

Pin this amazing room Setting to you Pinterest board 

There is always something rather romantic about the traditional style office. With a couple of leather sofas, it also doubles up beautifully as a reading room.

Desk = Think oak or another natural wood.

Desk furniture = Desk lamp / Table lamp – we’ve found this perfect traditional desk lamp by Dar lighting (Suffolk SUF4075/X) which has a beautiful matching floor lamp available. In addition, nothing says more ‘traditional’ than a globe finished in antique bronze. We’ve just found (yesterday when the new Endon catalogue landed on my desk) this amazing one - it will be on the website soon!

Floor = Think Natural wood or carpet - in combination with a beautiful rug. If you need a hand with choosing the right size for your space we have found the most amazing guide from Decorators notebook . 

Desk chair and sofas = something leather is definitely where you want to be looking. If you can get them all to have matching finishes, this would look amazing.

Curtains = These beautiful green curtains are Lambok from Clarke & Clarke = available from gilroycurtainsandblinds.co.uk . Gilroy Interiors  found this beautiful set of curtains for us. This material is decorative and had a lovely traditional design. As these floor length curtains the fabric really looks amazing. If you find the fabric for your room they can create curtains for any window size. This is ideal if (like me) your windows don't fit the usual conventions for window sizes. 

The walls = Cover at least 1 in a floor to ceiling bookshelf.  This is great storage space for your books, folders and momentous etc. The other walls can be covered in a colour to match your soft furnishings. 

Idea 2 – Black and White

Pin this room idea to your Pinterest board

This idea is ideal for those looking for a style a bit more modern and minimalist. It’s also a little bit easier to recreate without too much decoration. This is really great for a craft or hobby space.

The style makes use of contrasting colours and smooth lines.

Desk = You can get some fantastic glass or black/white pine desks. Ideally find yourself one with built in shelving. Great for some storage that you can keep hidden away. 

Desk furniture = We found these fantastic pencil holders from Etsy seller Making Time . If you are trying to keep to the theme, Black and White style desk furniture and ornaments are widely available.

Floor = If you’re planning on using this room as a craft room you will probably not want a thick carpet. I’m always dropping pins and it’s always best to find them before they find you! So thin carpet or painting wooden floors would be a great way to go.

Desk chair and sofas = For your desk chair you have lots of options. There is a huge range of black office furniture available. From experience, something comfortable with black leather is ideal if you plan on long sessions creating your next masterpiece.

Curtains = This space would be perfectly finished off with a set of black blinds. You can find some beautiful fabric and slat blinds. They are perfect for a more modern styled space. 

The walls = You can even bring a bit of black of white to your walls. We think this stripped paper by Clarke & Clarke from Gilroy Interiors would look fantastic as a feature wall (either horizontal or vertical)!

Idea 3 – Nautical Blue

Nautical blue is really an on trend design idea for the year. If you love this idea as much as I do then you’ll love these ideas for bringing that concept into your home office/hobby room.

Desk = Ideally you want to be looking for a white desk or a light colour natural wood desk. The concept of natural materials works really well with this theme.

Desk chair = A wicker chair would look fantastic in this space. Perhaps use a sheepskin rug or blanket to make it a little more comfortable.

Floor = If you are lucky enough to have natural wood floor boards, this is the ideal time to show them off. Otherwise, some wood laminate

Light = To keep up with the nautical theme, we found this beautiful nautical inspired lamp from David Hunt Lighting. This gorgeous table lamp looks fantastic withing a nautical themed room. The natural stone base means it will also match any other colour your decide to add to the space. If you need something a bit brighter, perhaps combine with some spot lights? This will ensure you have bright light exactly where you need it. 

Sofa’s and seating = We have been really lucky in our searches here. Gilroy Interiors were amazingly helpful in finding us this beautiful maritime sofa. If you already have a sofa, getting some nautical themed fabric made into a quilt or pillows by would be a great way to tie in this theme. While looking at Etsy we also found this beautiful seat - Ideal if you’re working on something larger and want to get away from the desk.

How to bring Moroccan design home in 10 easy steps (or less)

This week we’ve had a huge increase in people looking at the Moroccan themed lighting on our site. I would truly love to see the rooms some of the pieces are ending up in.

That got me thinking – what would I need to do to redesign a room in the Moroccan style? I really hope some of our beautiful finds sparks off some ideas!

The 10 steps to designing your Moroccan themed space

1. Decide on a budget.

This is really important. It will ensure that you don't go over budget. It will really help you with working out where to go for your pieces and fittings. 

2. Decide on a basic overall look.

-         The Games room  is a fantastic example of the use of a decorative light fitting and the use of fabric. The circus tent arrangement could be easily recorated in a bedroom space.

-         The Living room  is a beautiful example of the use of soft furnishings to add bright colour to the space. The curtains also partition the space, so a great idea if you have an open plan living space. To balance out the bright colours, the light fittings, accessories and furniture are all very neutral. It’s actually a great example of the neutral background + bright accessories trend I highlighted the other week.

-         The purple bedroom is a great example of an understated Moroccan design theme. It adds elements of the concept – bright colours, ornamental lights and soft furnishings.

-         The bedroom / study . This is a fantastic way of making a bedroom and study work really well in the same space. The Moroccan theme has really been picked up through the soft furnishings, accessories and the geometric patterns on the walls. It’s an understated design, but timeless.

-         Main bedroom in wood.  This goes off the theme of the use of brightly coloured fabrics. However, it makes fantastic use of the geometric patterns carved into the wood and beautiful lights.

3. Find & order your decorative fittings

It’s worth doing these early in the process. While you are waiting for them to arrive you can have fun painting / re-wallpapering and sorting out your floor.

        Lighting

Electric pendant

TaJ 8648CH   - Ideal if you want to replace your current fitting and are using bright colours with your soft furnishings.

Non Electric Pendant

NE-96061  – Ideal if you don’t want to rewire. The light can be easily sorted by just changing the pendant.

Wall Lights

Arabesque 1   - I love the geometric patterns and the neutral colours would work well with the brightly coloured fabrics. This one does have a matching ceiling light.

Table Lamps

Ceylon CEY4161 - You can even add some gorgeous Moroccan style to your bedside tables. This one does also have a matching ceiling light.

Fairy lights

Kasbah Light chain – Want to add some colour and some decorative light to your space? Fairy lights are an ideal solution. These ones are LED -so you don’t need to worry about them getting warm.

             Soft furnishings

Not knowing that much about soft furnishings, we approached our friendly experts at Gilroy interiors for some advice. They recommended these beautiful full length curtains in the Spirt Soul Rhythm Fabric by Scion. They are a fantastic way of adding some bright colour to your space.

If you need a creating a bedspread or cushion covers they will be more than happy to help you.

4. Find and order furniture or upcycle some old pieces.

Moroccan themed furniture is surprisingly easy to find. I spent a very enjoyable half an hour searching through etsy.com . There are some amazing one-off pieces. Our favourites were the beautiful cabinet (@marocasa1404) and this fantastically bright pouf (@poufbhagyodayfashio ).

5. Repaint (optional)

Even if you are just freshening up your current paint - this can make a real difference to the room.  Depending on your space, you might want to consider a feature wall.

Note: if you’re adding in some new wall lights, make sure you sort out the wiring before you repaint!

6. Flooring (optional)

This could be putting down a new carpet or using some wooden laminate. Although, you could save some pennies and plan your design to match your current floor!

7. Install your wall lights and electric pendants

 8. Install all your beautifully decorated new or upcycled/recycled furniture

 9. Install your non-electric pendant and table lights and soft furnishings.

This is where you’ll start to see the room coming together. It’s time to add your new curtains, throws, cushions, bedspreads and remaining lights. You should have a really good idea of how the finished room is going to look.

10. Buy and install any accessories.

Have you spotted some little accessories during your hunt? This is the time to buy them. You can use what you have left of your original budget. Leaving it until now means you don’t risk going over the top with it. A few well chosen beautiful pieces will look better than covering all of your remaining space!

Brand feature: LZF. Interior lights handmade from wood. Modern style for your home.

The Lzf catologue for their “wood touched by light” collection landed on my desk this week. I lost most of my morning pouring over the catalogue. These lights were something a little different to what we already have in our online collection.

All the lights are made carefully by hand to the highest quality in their warehouse (an old wine-house) in Spain. Because they are handmade, each piece will be unique.

The company was founded by Marivi Calvo & Sandro Tothil in 1994. 20 years on, their collection has grown from wooden tubes they designed and made in their basement. They now use top quality materials – e.g. tulip poplar wood and cheery or beech veneer.

These fantastic and modern lights can now be found in buildings globally – from Berlin to Barcelona to the USA. They create a unique kind of ambiance in a space that is difficult to recreate.

My personal favourite is the Candelabro (although it does mean I’m going to need to buy a bigger house!). This is a combination piece made up a mix of smaller designs. All the pieces are suspended from one base board with recessed lights to shine onto the design.

After a bit of research I have found some great images of this hanging in both homes and office spaces. In the catalog they have a picture of this over a dining room table. It looks fantastic – but would depend on your space and ceiling height! Alternatively, this would look amazing in an entrance hall to any office building. Any room with that sort of space would really show off this piece.

Have you spotted the x-club lights in your local McDonalds? I’ve always wondered where they got these from. These look fantastic. You can also them in a range of colours. So they become really easy for when your interior design needs to be within your brand colours.

They come as ceiling, wall, table and floor lamps. So you can literally put these x-club lights anywhere. The light level these lights emit mean they are great for mood lighting.

Anfora floor light – a fantastic solution for a floor light with mood lighting. This is really where the use of wood as a material comes into its element. The lamp becomes a beautifully decorative piece whether or not you need it on.

I am a complete lover of lanterns - we have some really nice glass ones at home. However, these Chou lights would be a fantastic replacement. They come in a range of colours and the silhouette effect of the wood is breathtaking.

Top 5 ideas for using Fairy Lights in your bedroom

When I started this job, I was convinced that fairy lights were plain pin lights that suddenly appear from nowhere in late September. How wrong I was.

We have a fantastic collected of some really beautiful examples of LED fairy lights. The range of colours and designs in fantastic – which leads me to dream on our Pinterest boards of where they could go in my house.

I’ve managed to dig up some really gorgeous ideas for the bedroom that I hadn’t thought of before. The fairy lights add a really soft light (or bright depending on the design) to the area you put them in.

On the other hand, I’ve always chosen to use LED lights at home. They don’t kick out as much heat. Also, they don’t use as much power so you don’t need to be scared of the energy bills!

1. As a Mirror surround - 

Floral fabric fairy lights are a great way of adding a bit of gentle decoration to the room. They are a great example of what can be achieved when you steer away from the traditional pin lights.

 They’re also a great idea for adding some decoration to your kid’s room (although they’re not suitable for under 3’s), or in your rented student flat.

  2. As a unique offline Photo Gallery -

I completely fell in love with this idea. It’s a simple combo of white pin lights and pictures. The best way I've found for attaching fairy lights to the wall is probably the Mini hooks by ‘Command’. Sellotape and bluetac never seems to work quite as well…

It is a really original way of presenting your photos and mementos – either for yourself or guests. Because the pictures aren't all perfectly framed you can easily change and update the display. 

3. Wall art with pin lights

Have you seen anything like this before? (If yes please tweet us @shinelighting ) . This is such a clever design idea. In concept it looks to be such a simple idea, but a fantastically well executed plan.

You’re going to want either 1 very long light string or 2. Although, you might be safer with 2 depending on how large you want to make it.

I personally think this could only be made better by using coloured pin lights . What would you do?

4. Light up the end of your bed

Do you have a metal bed frame? This could be the perfect way of jazzing it up. It adds a bit of soft light to end of your bed for those cosy evenings watching a film.

The perk of this idea is you could literally put any lights here. What would you choose?

Here’s a few ideas to get you started ...

5. Light up your 4 poster bed.... 

...Or to create your four-poster bed effect - buy yourself a mosquito net. This attaches to your ceiling and can create a really relaxing atmosphere.

The use of fairy lights to decorate is a beautiful idea. You can have some really good run here by experimenting with different light strings and different colours.

Highly recommend sticking to LED light strings as they won’t generate as much heat.

Design your home – Trends 2014 – Nautical and Blue

This has been a really popular trend this year. It’s also very universally appealing and timeless. As a result, decorating your room to this theme will still look great for years to come.

The rooms you can decorate this trend in are limitless.  It looks fantastic in Living rooms, Bedrooms or dining rooms.

The nautical room theme in life

Lighting is, surprising, a great place to start with this theme. We have some beautiful nautical styled fixtures and accessories to perfectly complement this trend.

Ceiling

Starting with the ceiling – This is a ceiling light I picked out from our Dar Collection. For me, the rope screamed out nautical to me. We’re based near the sea and I’m used to finding bit of rope from fishing nets all over the beach.  It also has a matching wall light to go with it.

Dar2333 - The rope fits in perfectly with this trend. 

Our other favourite ceiling idea was found through a little hunting on Pinterest. We love the custom printed map with the wooden ceiling fan. We’ve found one by Westinghouse – also in wood. However, this one also handily incorporates a light and has an optional remote.

Walls

For the Wall lights, I provide you with our two favourites. Option one is the Dar Joshua Wall light. This really picks up on the Beachwood idea – something that just reminds your of the beach. I haven’t seen anything similar to this. A beautiful idea. Option two is actually one of the clearance products we currently have a Ebay (so the stock is very limited)  - but I think it picks up brilliantly with both the Nautical and Blue colour trend this year.  The glass is also really thick and felt really sturdy when I was photographing it.

While having a look for nautical inspired pictures, I found the amazing Etsy website . All the featured nautical accessories have been found from Etsy traders.

These are my favorite 3 designs. They also really show the range of options this theme presents you with. Each captures different concepts commonly associated with the ocean. The colour options also really give you a great choice to tie in with any pre-existing accessories. We would recommend highlighting them using picture lights. It will mean that you can highlight your new pictures even when you don’t want the main light on!

Finally for the walls, you may also want to add a mirror. I uncovered this beautiful nautical themed mirror and felt like it would be an injustice not to include it. Fits perfectly into this theme, I would love it as a mirror in the bedroom.

The next area to go nautical is the sofa (or bed). We’ve managed to find some really beautiful cushion designs. They’re so different from anything you would usually find on the highstreet.

  Other Accessories

To finish off, there are a few little things you can add to a room to inject a bit of nautical into the space. 

The driftwood beach huts would look ideal on a bookshelf or your windowsill. Their blue colour scheme also matches well with most colour schemes already in the room. To match, these really originally map themed bunting are something a little different for this trend. However, the traditionally designed map is reminiscent of the ocean explorers.

To finish off, I discovered this beautiful hanging garland of sailing boats. I thought it would look amazing hanging off my curtain pole at home. In addition, it also matches amazingly with our sailing boat light chain.

Top 5 DIY Lighting projects for the Holidays

Are the kids bored already? Want to pull them away from the screen? We have some inspiration for you!

The popularity of the newly popular Loom Bands have been a resounding call that kids do want to get away from the screens and be creative. These are the top 5 DIY lighting craft projects we have found on our hunt around the internet – with a lot of help from Pinterest. 

From ViralNova – Plastic bottle + plastic spoons = pendant light  

This is a great project. I’ve always got plastic spoons littering the bottom of my drawers from parties in days gone past.

In this heatwave you’ll probably want to drink the water – so that sorts out the bottle!

Worst case – it’ll only cost you about a £5 from the local supermarket. If you want to get really inventive, you can buy other colours of plastic spoons off the internet!

  2. From Design Sponge – Old paper lampshade + scrap paper + glue = Pendant shade

This is such an easy project. If you don’t have a paper shade in your house, they can be picked up really cheaply from local shops.

For the scrap paper – you know all that junk mail that comes through your door? Save the space in your recycling bin and use it for this instead!

This is a cut and stick project that looks fantastic!

  3. From Revolutionaries blog – Old and disliked pendant shade + Chalkboard paint + chalk = Awesome pendant. 

Do you have a pendant lamp hiding in the loft that you were going to throw out? Give it a new lease of life with this fantastic DIY idea. Chalk paint is really easy to buy from a local DIY store or online.

Once it dries you can use crayons to design the pattern! Because it’s chalk, you can change the pattern to suit the season – just make sure its cooled down first!

4. From DIY Craft tutorials = Paper non-electric shade + Glitter + Spray on glue = Funky light.

This is a really cheap and easy design idea. Colour scheme the glitter depending on the room you want to put it in. My goddaughter is completely obsessed with glitter at the moment – so the pink one would be perfect. Would also be perfect for parties (just don’t leave them hanging out overnight!

5. From buzzfeed = Clear light bulbs + pack of sharpie pens. = Lamps that make fun patterns on the walls! 

This one is really simple and creates minimal mess (apart of cleaning the sharpie pens off your children).  To do this project all you need to do is get your kids to draw pictures on the light bulbs, let it dry and then plug in!

Just don’t forget to decide first if you’re putting it in the base of a table lamp of hanging from the ceiling. This can be a really fun project and - if you buy a few multi-packs of cheap lamps - will keep them amused for hours!

Today it was confirmed to us that we have won the regional heats for Independent of the year 2014!

How do we win?

What is this competition? 

The role of the competition is to highlight the value that Independent retailers bring to the local highstreet and the UKs town centers. It was created by Corin Birchall -  founder of Kerching Retail - who had been massively helpful to us the entire process. It has also been a fantastic opportunity for promotion across social media - highlighting the importance it plays when connecting to customers in the modern retail sector. 

Why do we want to win?

Winning be great for us in terms of exposure for the services we provide. However, it also highlights our local shopping area of Broadstone. This small and usually overlooked parade of shops is a gem in Poole. There is everything from lighting to sweets, cafes to card shops. It has been particularly beautiful the last few weeks in the sun - a few of the shops have been selling lots of icecreams!

Modern Interior Lighting - HARALD GLÖÖCKLER and EGLO Leuchten - New collection

In March this year the German designer Harold Gloockler and Eglo launched their joint lighting collection. This magnificent collection is brimming with sophisticated luxury. The design is no holds barred and the entire collection is made of the highest quality materials.

The Designer - Harald Glööckler

Born, raised and living in Germany, this man has literally done everything. He has created his own perfume, released a CD, painted, opened an art gallery, is a fashion designer and has now designed this stunning light collection. Harald’s products have been shown internationally and one of his fashion shows featured one of the longest catwalks in the world.

The collection

The highlight of the collection is the stunning Vivaldi pendant. It is a dazzling star inspired fitting finished in 24 carat gold plating and 400 cut crystals. Add this to your room as the crowning glory to your space.

Across Europe, this fantastic collection is in huge demand and has received positive response.  However, we will have to wait in the UK until Autumn of this year before we can get hold of it! We are super excited about seeing this collection and are hoping to put a few pieces in the showroom.

Design Your Home – Trends 2014 - Neutral Background with Coloured Accessories

This is one of our favorite trends this year. It allows you to create a room that you can quickly and easily restyle – should you happen to get bored with the current colour scheme.

Paint: Use a light coloured paint. Using a white or cream coloured paint will give you a really good background for hanging prints onto. If you have a small room, it will also make the space feel bigger.

Buy permanent fittings: neutral coloured sofas and carpet. The shade of this is very dependent on whether you have kids or pets – and personal preference!

Lighting: Semi flush or flush Ceiling lights and wall lights are likely to be a permanent fixture in your space. So look for something timeless if you don’t plan on changing these.

Table lights are the ultimate way of quickly adding a pop of colour to your space. The new ranges available this year really range through all designs, tastes and price points. They can be a really affordable option for redesigning your room.

If you want to turn off the ceiling light to watch a film, table lamps are a great way of adding a low level light to your space. We always recommend when designing your room to think about levels of light. This allows you to ensure your space will always suit your mood and requirements.

There are a few variations of colour shades on the internet, but David Hunt do a wide range of coloured shades to fit this lamp. If you need a specific colour call the shop directly. It also means you can keep this amazing lamp base and update by changing the shade! 

Option 3: Bertha BER4225 by Dar Lighting - This large based traditional Table lamp is an amazing way of adding colour to your space. The decoration is beautiful. 

  Option 5: Camden-TLRE by Endon Lighting - Really bright and eye-catching red table lamp. Also has matching floor lamp that looks equally spectacular! 

Soft furnishings: Now you have selected your colour scheme, it’s time to pick out your soft furnishings. Most good fabric shops will give you fabric samples to take. This will allow you to colour match curtains and cushions.
