okay let me outline why you should vote team dark (i am finally free to do so) spoilers for like. every game. and some archie screenshots (was gonna add idw but ran out of space) so here we are!!

let's start from the beginning. rouge and shadow were both introduced in the same game (sonic adventure 2) and were part of the "dark side" story. in the game it was originally a transactional alliance until shadow was reminded of maria, his sister who was killed in front of him, when she was locked in the vault with some chaos emeralds. throughout the game due to his ptsd, he gets flashes of maria's final moments and when he hears that rouge will be caught in the explosions they had rigged to go off, he immediately thinks of rouge in the bunker and maria sacrificing herself for him. he runs through his level of White Jungle that plays the song "Rhythm and Balance". It's important to note shadow is having what is essentially a prolonged mental breakdown throughout the whole game and is not in the right frame of mind.

this song implies that shadow is terrified he wont make it in time to reach rouge (which he barely manages to get there) and the lines in the verse switch from what can be assumed is Maria speaking to shadow with shadow responding to her. the "You are hiding something line" is really interesting because it works either way you look at it. It can either be maria saying this to him or shadow himself. this definitely correlates with the next scene where shadow denies having had an ulterior motive to saving rouge other than her having the chaos emeralds despite us knowing otherwise.

the story progresses and in the end shadow sacrifices himself to save the earth. the moment sonic comes back, rouge is the first one to ask where shadow is. it's to rouge that sonic gives shadow's inhibitor rings and they share a moment where rouge wonders if shadow truly was made as nothing more than a tool for revenge which sonic replies with that he died a hero. rouge agrees, holding the inhibitor ring close. shadow died protecting the earth to grant maria's last wish. except he comes back.

in sonic heroes, rouge breaks into an abandoned eggman base looking for treasure only to find herself in a room that held a shadow locked in stasis. once she starts freeing him, a robot in the room reactivates and immediately starts spraying bullets everywhere. shadow's first instinct once he awakens is to dive for rouge and make sure she's safe before trying to take on the robot which happens to be e-123 omega. rouge breaks the fight up and deescalates the situation where she learns that omega was "abandoned" in the room and shadow has amnesia. once again, the relationship is transactional, but unlike in sa2, they speedrun this family shit hardcore in that they trust each other throughout the story and even find time to joke around, with the last scene in their campaign being shadow and rouge joking around. the story progresses with team dark (this is where they officially get the name) finding out that eggman made androids of shadow and there is no way to know if the shadow they currently have is the real shadow or not. at the end of their story, there is a brief interaction between omega and rouge.

what is important about this interaction is specifically omega. we are starting to see how rouge and shadow's relationship is fleshing out but now we're seeing how omega is growing fond of the other two. for context, omega's whole mission is to destroy all eggman robots to prove he is the ultimate robot (lots of ultimate x titles in this team) and then kill eggman as revenge for wasting his potential by leaving him in that room (more on that later). as such, destroying shadow if he is an android like they suspect, would be of his prime objective. but he doesn't. instead, he tells rouge that if there's a clone it means there must be an original somewhere. its unsaid, but its a "even if he isn't the real one he's the one I've gotten used to and is one of mine" type of thing. and this is something that is common in omega's interactions with rouge and shadow. they are all exceptions to each other's rules. even when shadow is confirmed to be the real shadow at the end of his solo game, the relationship is still caring.

skipping over shadow 2005 bc there wasnt as much that i could remember (i haven't played it in a while but i do remember there is an ending where shadow and omega bond over killing eggman bc shadow thinks he's an android and they promise to rule the world yeah don't ask)

sonic 2006 was unfortunately the last time we really see team dark due to some sega interference (the mandates my fucking DETESTED) and this is truly where everything culminates and you really feel the love they have for each other. and i think its also a great place to put that the sonic franchise is built on found family. these characters are made up of all the people they love and the power of friendship is so real. love, family, friendship, camaraderie is the bread and butter of sonic's story (at least the good ones). and team dark's story in sonic 2006 shows it so well.

shadow goes on a rescue mission to save rouge who was stealing "the scepter of darkness" from eggman's base. shit gets wild eggman forces surround them and in the confrontation the scepter shatters and mephiles the dark is released. he takes on shadow's likeness and implies they've known each other. he zaps rouge and shadow to the future and time travel shenanigans occur. the pair stumble upon a dusty, inactive omega who is on standby and has been for years. shadow hesitates in leaving him, not wanting to abandon him before rouge tells him there's nothing they could do for him. they end going back to the present and there's confrontations with mephiles throughout. what is really important to note is that shadow manages to defeat mephiles time and time again because he has rouge and.or omega with him. mephiles is trying to get to shadow's head and mess him up, to break his spirit, but it never works because shadow has his family with him.

this scene is the first time we hear that shadow was captured by humanity as he was blamed for what happened with solaris and the end of the world. mephiles uses this to try to manipulate shadow into joining his side and then to kill him but it doesn't work so they start fighting. mephiles gets the upper hand but omega ends up breaking up the fight and joining in. omega and shadow manage to beat mephiles who then escapes.

mephiles proceeds to escape and the two follow him to no avail. some time passes as they look for answers and omega has a confrontation with mephiles who drops this bomb.

the implication that omega wasnt abandoned in that room is there. he was created for this and its why he was reactivated the moment shadow awoke, not when rouge opened the door. all this power, to know he can stand against someone so strong is something that would normally be cool to omega. but this is shadow. that's different. when rouge and shadow appear, he pauses before admitting to it, to which shadow responds with shock. he says nothing throughout the whole scene, while rouge demands to know why. she isn't made at omega, far from it, she says that its unfair that shadow would throw himself in danger to save the world only for it to turn on him. then she drops this line.

shadow, knowing this and trusting them despite the revelation replies in kind. saying that he will not forget.

shadow's story ends with a final confrontation where shadow is with omega and rouge, whose presence allow him to be the strongest he has been, and he comes to the realization that he truly does choose his own destiny.
