Having finished replaying all the possible options (there were so many variables for this chapter) and having had some time to think, I think the main reason so many people are disappointed is that Vasili's reveal just wasn't good
Vasili having killed Sebastyan and betraying Trystan and using Marguerite this whole time, not to mention the supposed twist on the Act thing, in itself has a massive emotional impact. Trystan said themself, Sebastyan worshipped the ground he walked on. He didn't even want the throne for himself, he wanted it for Vasili. And then Vasili killed him, and in his last moments, he knew that the person he worshipped most in the world was just using him
And then there's the implications re:Sebastyan's relationship with Trystan... There were many times when Sebastyan seemed to just have a completely wrong impression of Trystan (not knowing that they support the Act, for example), so it's not impossible that Vasili had been manipulating him about it the whole time. Or, if Sebastyan has always known that Vasili was Juliana's ex, maybe he clung so hard to the theory that it was Trystan's fault so he wouldn't have to face the possibility that someone he loved so much could've done this to her. It's even possible Vasili had something to do with Sebastyan never reaching out to Marguerite. Not to mention finally showing the resentment and loathing Vasili has kept to himself this whole time, which we saw a bit of through the cracks, but still, this would be our first glimpse of who Vasili really is, not who he's trying to show us
All in all, pretty powerful emotional stuff, but the delivery just... Wasn't it. First of all, it was completely unrelated to the entire rest of the chapter, so it feels like they just dropped it from the ceiling. We spend the entire chapter in that dinner with Astrid, hell, we get three separate diamond options all meant to impress Astrid. All so we can get a lock of her hair. Which doesn't even make sense, because we can get that from her hairbrush when she's not in the palace, holy fuck
Astrid is an interesting character and I liked getting more info on her. But, unless there are more twists coming, everything we did this chapter was essentially pointless. Which could have been played for more emotional impact - Vasili is the only sibling other than Marguerite who was never the object of MC's investigation, after all - but instead it was just........... Hey, cool effort you just made there. The killer will now reveal who he is through absolutely no effort of your own, btw
And the delivery is just sad. Like, he's just giving a speech that was clearly written with the sole intention of putting as many damning words in his mouth as quick as possible. No one talks like this, no one makes a speech like this, it's just not natural. The emotional stakes feel very low in context, too, since the setting isn't particularly dramatic. All in all it felt like they slapped this reveal on top of The Astrid Chapter and called it a day
And then the contents of the reveal itself boil down to... "Look, now I got everything I've always wanted". Other than the mention of the Drakovian Nightingale, we didn't even need to have any clues to understand what his speech was hinting at. In fact, most of the "reveal" boils down to vibes. MC thinks that the way he lists off the victims is kind of weird and he mentioned a fucking bird that's literally the national bird anyway, and then Vasili looked angrily at Trystan and... That's it? That's the proof we get that Vasili has been on a murderous rampage the whole time? We don't even get the satisfaction of seeing the pieces and clues fall into place or come in handy to understanding his speech. It's just sort of dropped on our laps. If MC had sat on their ass this whole time it would have gone pretty much the same way, save for the mention of the stupid goddamn fucking bird, like, be serious
This had the potential to be so dramatic and they chose to let us know in the least emotionally engaging way possible, in the span of less than a minute, after zero buildup throughout the chapter and without any immediate stakes. I still think that Vasili was kind of a boring choice of killer and this reveal has so many plot holes (at least for now, maybe next chapter will give us more information that will change the game but im not holding on to that hope too much) and there were many considerably more interesting routes they could've taken and that the reason so many people suspected Vasili was the lack of buildup rather than this being clued into the story... But I also feel like if they had played into the strengths of that plot choice (the maximum angst potential it has) it would have felt a lot less disappointing. Could've made for a breathtaking chapter, even. I guess we'll have to wait and see how they play it next chapter, but for this one it just felt underwhelming
well, we know now
and that was a disappointing reveal. it makes sense that it would be vasili. but it's so boring. can you imagine if it really was astrid. how convoluted it would've been? that she really did want to be a queen? if she was the killer, we could assume she knew lydea was illegitimate. that would put astrid second in line to the throne (if she successfully squashed the act of equity). the only obstacle left would be trystan.
anyway, i was holding out hope they wouldn't take the easy way out (making bas - though he was pretty doomed to die since we met him - or vasili the killer). now im only praying they'll give us some angst at the end.
Cop 2 ch 14 thoughts
Haven't read it yet but saw spoilers and I'm genuinely disappointed that it was Vasili like. "Let's make that one calm character that we barely interacted with and never suspected guilty!!! It will be MIND BLOWING!!!" (spoiler: it was not)
If you ask me he was literally the worst option for the killer. Even Patryk was a better option. And by the reactions I'm seeing the reveal wasn't even good
Astrid should've been the murderer and illegitimate daughter
Maybe I’m late and everyone else had already come to terms with the changes in the characters and the lack of concern for MC in the previous chapters. But idk it really hit hard for me in this chapter. I’m honestly so disappointed. I was really trying to hold out hope that they would get into the emotional stuff once the whole party was back together, but they just didn’t? Not to mention the glaring inconsistencies.
Things felt so off that I was starting to think MC was actually still trapped in the shadow realm or that all of our friends were corrupted like people have been theorizing. But then they hop straight into that Valax fight scene and show that everything is very real and we’re all apparently fine (aside from getting our asses kicked)? Someone please tell me I’m not the only one who feels disappointed and confused by how disjointed this book has been so far
No I agree 100%. Something is off. Something is VERY off. My theory is that Andrew is no longer writing Blades. It just doesn’t feel like his work. Whoever is writing Blades 2 not only doesn’t know how to write angst, emotion, or trauma, but they also seem to be completely disconnected from the characters as well. I would say Andrew probably wrote the outline for the book, but he’s not actually doing any of the writing. Unless he’s just over it and doesn’t give a shit anymore.
On Storyloom "Choices Secret Revealed", they mention Andrew is a former lead writer 🥲
FORMER LEAD WRITER OH MY GOD THAT’S WHY BLADES FEELS SO STIFF NOW
We are gonna get a Crime and Passion book 3 omg
perhaps it’s a good thing crimes is ending so you lot can stop claiming book 2 was bad and trystan and mc were “too different from book one”
LIKE MAN… we got a creepy gothic setting, genuinely a good plot where no one really knows who the killer(s?) is, a family of complete psychopaths who are all interesting, and trystan and mc have had like 7 i love you confessions without ever actually saying the words which goes SO hard
in conclusion: you guys are boring
In case that it hasn’t been clear yet, Sebastyan’s murder is probably the epitome of the absolute betrayal and most probably the worst way to go:He was a lonely person who trusted and had close to him only 1-3 members of his family, and eventually one of them killed him. It’s really saddening.
Ch 13 was the saddest chapter ever.
Breaking the news to Mags about Bas was so heart wrenching the way she is in denial and if that wasn't worse Eveline comes and when Trystan breaks the news she just starts wailing just a heart breaking cry, also to compare it with Drakovian Nightangle was apt.
I didn't have the courage to break it to Mags.
Also on a side note I liked how the writers captured the different emotions of every Thorne siblings, the grief in this chapter was on point. You couldn't help but feel moved in some way, like sympathise with them even though we never really go to know Bas other than the fact that he was a loner. Everyone feels bad for him.

I thought i got rid of you devil for good omg 🙉🙉🙉
I am really enjoying the return of Blades of Light and Shadow, really, and I don't want to rush into any conclusions, but today's re-encounter with my LI was not what I was expecting.
My LI is Tyril and I don't know if he is generally the first companion that rejoins you or it depends on the LI you had in the first book, but I am not satisfied with how his return played out. MC (Audra) and him were deeply in love, and she was away for a whole year. In my mind, that must have destroyed him in some ways, he would be absolutely desperate to retrieve her.
And then she reappears after that dreadful year, and they take care of the creature he's fighting and then they have the chance to hug and kiss. But it didn't feel right. I was hoping for tears, for a endless hug that he couldn't seem to bring himself to break, for long stares because he can't believe she's real...
It felt rushed. A lot. And I'm aware this is only an opinion based on what I myself was expecting, which doesn't make it a bad reunion, but I can't help feeling this way.
Why did I feel butterflies seeing fucking Aerin again and not Tyril?
I am angry that happened.
