Christian de Laubadère
Christian de Laubadère
French artist Christian de Laubadère’s ‘Neck’ paintings are unusual and refined. Living and working in Shanghai, the artist produces works that are a curious combination of both French and Chinese traditions. Using a charcoal background and chiaroscuro technique, he paints enigmatic and fascinating pictures of the napes of women’s necks. For the artist, this part of the body is a powerful symbol of femininity and sensuality. Never revealing their faces, the elegant figures are embellished with antique fabrics and lace, creating in his works a mysterious fusion of his French heritage and adopted Chinese culture.
Christian de Laubadere was born in Gascogne, France in 1945. He obtained his Masters Degree in Fine Arts from l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He paints on paper and canvas using lead pencils, black smoke (sfumato), charcoal and other media, as well as printed and embroidered textiles collected from China and France.
