As I said before, I'm in a mini project of turning an abandoned lot into a veggie garden. The land owner -- who is one of the project members -- said that her parents used to grow something there. And we see some turmeric still left growing in one corner of the lot. She said I could dig it up and use it, so look what I did today before it started raining! :D 耕作放棄地を畑にしてみるミニプロジェクトの場所は、もともと色々植えてた畑だったという話。今でも一角にウコンが残っているんで、それを掘らせてもらって、今日やってみたのがコレ!
The turmeric dye didn’t look as strong as onion skin dye. It seemed necessary to keep it over a low heat all the way through. 煮出しても、タマネギの皮の染料ほど濃い色は出ない様子。染める間も、ずっと弱い火で温め続ける必要があるみたい。
Using vinegar as a mordant results in a brighter, lemon yellow color than using alum mordant. I read that on the internet so I HAD TO give it a try (since I had some vinegar left in the kitchen for years...) ウコン染めは、媒染にミョウバンでなくお酢を使った方が、明るいレモンイエローになる様子。全部ネットの受け売りですけどね。^^)
Yep. It IS lemon yellow. わー、ホントにレモンイエローですワ。♬
The results:
Tie-dye, with/without wood plates 絞り染め+板締め染め
Combination of persimmon dye and tie dye (with/without wood plates) 柿渋ハンコ+板締め染+絞り染め なんか、何がやりたかったのかワカランような模様になってますが。ww とにかく、柿渋で葉っぱのハンコを押し灰汁で発色させ水洗いした、その濡れた布を、そのままウコン染料で煮て染めたらちゃんと染まる。コレを確かめたんで。満足。♬
I loved it! Yeah, I’m not too crazy about the smell from the cooked turmeric roots, to be honest. But it’s not too difficult and so much fun! And more than anything, the ingredients (turmeric and unripe persimmons) were free and everything I used, including the mordants (ash and vinegar) was natural stuff, no chemicals! I really liked the idea of environment-friendly dyeing. ;D いやーオモシロい! 確かに、ウコンを煮出す時の匂いはあまり好きにはなれないですが。漢方薬の匂いですね。 でも簡単で 楽しい! 何といっても、染料の材料のウコンも青柿もタダだし、それも媒染(灰・お酢)も含めてすべて、自然の材料。合成の化学物質ナシ。 環境にやさしい染め物ってトコが、イイじゃないですか。^^)b .
