If you feel down and you need cheering up, I recommend reading the McShep story Junk Cheap by DevilDoll. It’s an AU fic where John owns a junk shop and Rodney is a professor and it’ll definitely put a huge smile on your face!

They usually stayed at Rodney’s place, because John’s mildewy books made Rodney sneeze, and because John’s mattress was a nightmare (also, Rodney was secretly convinced it was second hand and that someone had probably died on it). It didn’t take long for the busybodies in the building to figure out what was going on. They had no hesitation about knocking on Rodney’s door if they were looking for John, which was how Rodney ended up coming out of the bathroom stark naked one morning to find Gladys in his kitchen, describing her clogged drain to John in excruciating detail.

“Man, Gladys sure can scream,” John said after she left, rubbing his ear and grimacing.

“That wasn’t Gladys,” Rodney said.

Possible AU’s: 

SamSteve AU where Steve’s a famous, A list actor who Sam (a journalist, maybe) gets the opportunity to interview. Sam just wants to get the job done, especially since the rumors that Steve’s a bit of a diva/hot head/jerk ass turn out to be true. 

Just, all the glorious snarking, witty banter and razor sharp quips as they butt heads immediately. Sam is totally unimpressed with Steve’s badboy demeanor, tells him such more than likely + walks out, leaving Steve dumbfounded. 

Nobody’s EVER talked to him like that, made him look like a fool. Sam tries to go back to his daily life, but that might not be so easy when Steve shows up at his campus, sporting designer shades + leather jacket probably, drawing a crowd. And he’s looking for HIM, apparently.  

To escape the mob of fans + curious on lookers, Steve pulls Sam aside in an empty classroom. Tries to ~apologize~ in a very Steve manner, that probably involves him saying something like “I’m sorry you got offended”. Sam’s not having it, needless to say. 

(Bonus: rumours start flying that Sam is Steve’s mysterious new boyfriend soon after this train wreck encounter. Everyone pesters Sam at school to get confirmations. “I would sooner gargle liquid nitrogen than be involved with that arrogant, shallow, narcissistic asshat” is his golden response on his way to psych class.)

Hey! As you seem to have a knowledge of many different types of recipes, I was wondering if you might have stumbled across a recipe for cake that involves a vinegar syrup or boiling vinegar for the cake? I was asked about this recently by someone in their 60s whose grandmother used to make it for them. It sounds interesting, but I haven't found anything online or in my grandmother's old recipes for it. I would love to be able to find it for them.

Whoa, boiling vinegar in cake, I’ve never heard of that but it sounds like something I’d want to try. (The only use for boiling vinegar I’ve ever heard of is to clean pennies and other metal stuff with.) 

A bit of googling suggests to me that your friend’s grandmother may have been making what was called “war cake” or “depression cake” where vinegar was used to make a smoother, fluffier cake at a time when eggs were rationed or too expensive to use in cakes. I didn’t look at specific recipes because I would imagine you’ve googled “cake made with vinegar” already so you’ve seen those. I didn’t turn up anything using vinegar syrup or boiling vinegar; vinegar syrup seems to be mainly reserved for making balsalmic glazes and other accents for savory dishes. I did see one or two apple-cider vinegar glazes for cakes, mainly fruitcakes. 

If anyone out there has a boiling-vinegar or vinegar-syrup cake recipe do share, I’d like to try that too.

I had tried every variant of vinegar (boiled/syrup) in cake I could think of, and depression cakes came up a fair amount, but they just didn’t sound right per his description.

I really appreciate everyone replying and making suggestions. The Asynpoeding sounds like it could be it! (thank you, @nonsenseandstuff!) I’m also kind of excited to see that it is served with custard, since my friend absolutely loves custard.

I’m currently trying to track down some history on the dish, but it looks like the history might be a bit of a mystery.
