I just read a tremendously gross article by a Christian author today. It is called: “When Kylie Jenner Challenged Sadie, Her Response Was Brutally Honest.”
The article starts off with: “While Kylie Jenner is prancing around with pumped up lips and promiscuous clothing, Sadie Robertson is busy writing an inspirational book and praying for America. Both 17-year-olds come from reality tv families with powerful empires and both girls unquestionably have influential roles on the girls of America. I sincerely hope your daughter is inspired by Sadie and not busy with the disgusting #KylieJennerChallenge.”
I should have known that it would only get more misogynistic, antagonistic, hateful, and awful from here. From here, the (Christian) author lists all of the reasons why Kylie Jenner is a horrible person- mainly because she is “promiscuous” and has a “dysfunctional” family.
The author also compares Christian teen Sadie Robertson to Kylie Jenner along every step of the way. While Kylie wears “small pieces of fabric that barely cover anything”, prayerful teen Sadie “is always appropriately covered up… a true lady”. While Kylie wears “inappropriate Easter Outfits”, Sadie is an “Outspoken Christian” who “walk[s] the Word of God”. While Kylie’s makeup and hair choices are “desperate cries for attention”, Sadie’s natural look “inspires beauty to be more than skin-deep”. The list goes on and on and on and it only gets grosser (and creepily misogynistic).
I am all about the pursuit of righteousness. I am all about capitalizing upon the price of the Cross and understanding that I must allow myself to be tempered of my lusts of my flesh and of my vain desires to let my shallow heart draw nearer to the Lord. But this horrendous article is about none of that.
This article is about trying to affirm Sadie Robertson’s goodness by comparing her to Kylie Jenner and her “badness, promiscuity, ignorance, and inappropriateness.” It honestly cannot get any more judgmental or hateful than that folks- especially because, from what I’ve surmised, Kylie Jenner is not currently held to the same convictions or knowledge that we as Christians in the truth of Christ have. It’s like judging a toddler to read at the ability of a 3rd grader and calling the toddler “bad, promiscuous, inappropriate, and ignorant” when he or she is not ready to do it.
Now, I want to vomit because I’ve always thought that these horrendous types of Christian attitudes toward nonbelievers were just attitudes reserved by outlier groups/churches who often do a lot more hating than they do loving. I’ve always kind of thought the stereotype of the judgmental Christian was slowly but surely being replaced by the reality of the Christians who speak the message of Christ in service and in love. But judging by the 62,000 shares on this article, I’m afraid that this stereotype may be a stereotype for a reason.
And if this is much more than a belief that only a few members of a few hateful churches perpetuate, where have we gone wrong? ‘Cause we are modern-day pharisees as we judge and judge and judge Kylie Jenner for doing the things of this world. We are modern-day pharisees as we literally idolize other Christians for the work that they do, and set them (and their “pure, committed boyfriends”) on a terrible Evangelical pedestal. We are modern-day pharisees as we find reason after to reason to shame, belittle, and demonize those who haven’t yet taken up the cross.
My heart weeps with rage and my fists shake with anger. How could anybody think this treatment of others is okay? How can anybody believe that they are any better than Kylie Jenner as a human being- as if we all haven’t been slaves to our sins in our pasts? As if we’ve never given into our flesh and never strayed from the path and never have been completely undeserving of His incredible grace?
I’m so disgusted that Christian bloggers on that site think that they have the right to write this article of denigration (of Kylie Jenner) and of idolization (”perfect Christian teen” Sadie Robertson) and I’m just so ashamed to know that this type of Pharisaical thinking is still prevalent in our world today.
We need to do much better at this whole love thing, Christians.
