A breakdown of Homi K Bhabha’s Cultural Third-Space.

1st Space - Cultural home of native/indigenous people, goes with you wherever you are

2nd Space - Imposed colonial structures (such as government, religion, law, social behaviours)

3rd Space - A hybrid culture created out of the need for those within 1st space to survive in 2nd space. Without 3rd space, the indigenous people, once colonisation has been imposed, do not have much in the way of resources to articulate their identity. 3rd space brings in the useful and productive things from the 1st and 2nd spaces to create a hybrid identity. Is not geographically based.

Study Of Interactions

The videos from two separate group meetings layered on top of each other. Study of Interactions is a study of our own behaviour, body language and ways of speaking with with each other, comparing the classroom environment to a home setting. This work arose from a group discussion of typical Asian versus Australian ways of speaking to and acting around other people. For example, where it is not atypical for a western Australian to say that they are ‘very good’ at doing something, saying something such as this would be unusual and even looked down upon in a setting where Asian individuals are in the majority.

Mother Tongue 2015

Mother Tongue explores racism and cultural prejudice within Australia through the exposure to each group members’ mother tongue language. We translated a quote by Tony Abbott, “Jesus didn’t say yes to everyone. Jesus knew that there was a place for everything, and it is not necessarily everyone’s place to come to Australia.” into Japanese, Cantonese and Mandarin and filmed each of us reading it out for the first time in each of these languages. The piece finishes by being read out in English. Whilst Mother Tongue captures the dissonance that may arise from intermingling cultures (through the racist quote and difficulty in reading in another language), it is not a negative response to cross-culturalism. Instead, it criticises racism by celebrating the positive kind of dissonance that we have created through our initial attempt at reading in our friends’ mother tongue languages, bridging the gap between our culture and theirs’.

An After-Cultural Meal

Understanding features of our own cultures to integrate them into a single whole. This event explores the creation of a post culture through the combination of our own culture’s eating habits. A recipe created, made and eaten by us that combines elements of our own cultures to create something new.

An After-Cultural Meal 

Ingredients

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

3 crushed garlic cloves

2 onions, thinly sliced

1 ½ cups shredded cabbage

1 carrot peeled and grated

50g mushrooms, finely chopped

1 tablespoon soy sauce

30 gow gee wrappers

- 150g Flour

- 110ml boiling water

Method

Make gow gee wrappers - put flour in a bowl and mix them. Knead the dough until smooth. Divide into 30 blobs, flatten with a rolling pin.

Heat oil in frying pan over medium heat

Add garlic, onion, cabbage, carrot and mushroom

Cook, stirring for 5-6 minutes (until cabbage has wilted)

Remove from heat

Stir in soy sauce and cool for 10 minutes

Place wrappers on a flat surface

Spoon 2 teaspoons of mixture on half of each wrapper

Brush edges with cold water and fold over

Press edges to seal and place on a tray lined with baking paper

Place in a oiled pan

Fry until lightly golden

Add 100ml water, steam for 4-5 min

Week 11 Studio Activity - Find a signal and interrupt it

This is a condition of the normative cultural signal - in an environment (In this case, a class in an Australian university in Australia), the local one is the leading figure and external ethnicity is passive. For the studio activity, we broke this signal and the external group (three international students) became the dominant source of signals, as the local student kept silence.

ASSESSMENT TWO FINAL/CONCEPT STATEMENT 

THE CITY BUILT ON THE DESIRE. 

The city built on the desire, which is my final work. desire is a constructive force: desire produces its own objects according to Deleuze’s theory. This time I was focused on utopia. Utopia was named by Sir Thomas More in his novel ‘Utopia’, this book describe an ideal island in the Atlantic Ocean. This island has perfect society and politics and enforcement regime. nowadays, Utopia is describing the ideal society or nowhere. There are lots of novelists had wrote about Utopia, such as Archaeologist of the future: The Desire Called Utopia and Other Science Fictions and taohuayuanji by Chinese poet TaoYuanMing. TaoYuanMing wrote a fisherman went to the Utopia by accident and saw the equal and peaceful life in Utopia, after he left the fisherman tried lots of time want to go back to Utopia until he dead, but he never find it again. The main thoughts of TaoYuanMing are to expressing his dissatisfaction with real life and the pursuit of a better. The Utopia came out because of people are dissatisfaction of reality, also can say, the utopia came out because of desiring.

Through my research, I began to find a way to present my Utopia world, I found a  Spanish artist called Juan Osborne, I  was inspiration his famous works is to combine words to make a painting. For my experiment part, my first experiment is about asking friends and stranger a  question which is  what are you desire about recently  and I used the result in my final work. For my second experiment, I drew the outline of the city, filled up with the words that are using to describe Utopia such as fantasy island; happiness; equal and peace etc. I also had a planned to make a zoetrope, drawing the utopia world inside, but I torpedoed my ideal because I cannot represent my ideal.

I also did research about Atlantis, there is much debate about if the Atlantis had existed. Scientist found out the remnant under the sea, also according to Plato’s records made Atlantis more mysterious. Atlantis used the utopia society that with high technology; wealthy and high culture. But according to records, Atlantis was sunk in the Atlantis Ocean in the end. Because the utopia was all just legends, there is another voice came up called anti-utopia, I also did research about it. This society may look like a peaceful town, but it has full of contradiction and crime etc, such as the movie called ‘hungry game’ is anti-utopia society.

Be honest, I do not believe Utopia world will exist in the future, anything will have two sides including desire. My final project called ‘the city built on the desire’, it means the city in came from human’s mind, human’s desire, not only me. I made a word painting inspiration by Juan Osborne, the outline of the city I used words for describing the society and ‘utopia’ such as peace; equal and fantasy land etc and other words I use to filled up the city was the result coming from my experiment. Combine all people’s desire, the city has been filled up. Because I do not believe the world can be true ‘utopia’, there are some word describe negative desire. That is the true world for me. The lower part is all about vocabulary desire, I want to show the city is built on the desire directly.

For the display part, I just want simply mounted the painting on the wall in the gallery.

THE WORLD WAS COINED BY SIR THOMAS MORE IN GREEK FOR HIS 1516 BOOK UTOPIA(IN LATIN), DESCRIBING A DICTIONAL ISLAND SOCIETY IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. THE TERMS HAS BEEN USED TO DESCRIBE BOTH INTENTIONAL COMMUNITIES THAT ATTEMPT TO CREAR AN IDEAL SOCIETY, AND IMAGINED SOCIETIES PORTRAYED IN FICTION.

In dissecting these texts, Jameson also examines the broader topic of utopian longing: the desire for a better world. It's the urge to imagine a society free from the defects of the one we actually live in; and the drive to begin constructing such a society, not in the afterlife or in the distant future, but right here and right now.The "desire called utopia" has been defeated again and again in our cruel and bloody history; there are many who would tell us just to forget about it, because human beings cannot achieve perfection. But utopianism springs up afresh after every defeat; eliminating the desire for a better world is finally just as ridiculous and impossible as eliminating sexuality, or irony, or the quest for intoxication. As long as there are jails, prisoners will dream of escaping them; and some will even try to put their dreams into action.

Finally grasping Deleuze’s desire

After much reading something clicked. I can finally untie desire from the concept of lack and explore the more elusive desire.

Here’s what I’ve come to conclude:

Desire is this kind of positive ‘flow’ that exists within a social formation.

Desire connects all the elements of a assemblage and flows between and around them.

Desire doesn’t exist outside of a ‘body without organs,’ which is basically an assemblage or social formation.

Desire is behind all aspects of production in a social formation. Think of it like a machine that produces things.

Desire CAN imply sexual energy, but it can be so much more.

Desire doesn’t create fantasy, it creates real objects.

We all have drives that interpret the world and compel us to action (our drive to smoke, to get good grades, to party, to wake up, to eat, etc).

These drives are arranged and assembled by social formation, and are never free, unbound or individual. 

Desire is the state of these drives, not just the drives in me, but how the drives in everything are interacting and arranging themselves.
