Today is the 5th of November,what most NZers recognise as Guy Fawkes day - because its an excuse to let off fireworks and we were colonised by England.
But to be honest, it's not really relevant and we have a much more significant event that falls on this date.
Today is Te Rā o te Pāhua.
In 1881, the peaceful settlement of Parihaka was invaded.
Its a big complicated issue, and it ties into the land wars and colonisation as a whole, but it is certainly one of our more significant events. Here is a short video about it.
