Horatio should learn to share
āIs that all?ā The blond behind the register asks with a smile. He is wearing a bicorne hat and part of a uniform. You reply that it is, and hand him your card. You are almost late, but when you saw the new coffee shop, CafĆ© Indefatigable, you knew you had to stop. You step away from the cash register, towards the case of pastries. Another man, older, and more completely dressed, leans down and selects one for the customer behind you. You check your watch. You feel you should not have stopped for coffee. Before you can thoroughly regret your decision, a third man appears behind the counter. Unlike the others, he wears nothing but an apron. His dark curls bounce slightly as he sprints towards you, coffee in hand, repeating your order exactly as you spoke it. Your name is on the cup, spelled correctly. You thank him. He turns around and disappears into the back room, apron strings flying behind him. The coffee is aromatic, and warm in your hand. You rummage in your pocket for a tip for the jar. When you leave, the faint chime of a shipās bell follows you down the sidewalk. You walk briskly to your destination, thinking of the three sailors you had the pleasure of meeting, and wondering when youāll make a return voyage.
