You wonder if this heart of mine Will lose its desire for you Never my love Never my love
What makes you think love will end When you know that my whole life depends On you (on you)

About Eliott’s IG post
Eliott posted a screen shotGus Van Sant’s movie “My Own Private Idaho” on his IG and I guess it’s more just a random sad post related to his current state of mind.
“My Own Private Idaho”, realised in 1991, is about Mike, a young prostitute addict (River Phoenix) who falls in love with his best friend (Keanu Rives). Throughout the film, Mike is a victim of narcolepsy, which forces him to fall into deep lethargic sleep.
It’s one of the first LGBTQ movie starring an explicit and non stereotypical gay character. More than an unrequited love story, My Own Private Idaho describes the difficulties and issues of being a queer youngman. The loneliness and the search of identity is the heart of the movie, leaving poetic and dreamy feelings after watching it.
From personal experience -as a 20yo pan young woman-, My Own Private Idaho is a part of the indie-movies-from-the-90s-and-2000s-you-should-watch-when-LGBT. Such as Gregg Aaraki’s “Mysterious Skin” or documentary “Paris Is Burning”, this movie shows an aspect of the LGBT community from the “street side” of the wall, where life can be harmful, full of disillusions but when at the end of the day, you can find some love and relief.
I guess these movies had a really huge impact on young people and especially young directors. I suppose Eliott giving us a “My Own Private Idaho” reference with his IG post can be read as more than one reading level.
It shows Eliott’s isolation and helplessness because of his own illness. It also shows his tastes, what kind of movie he likes and how maybe he relates himself to River Phoenix’s character.
I think, but I can be wrong, it’s also a deep choice from David and his crew. They chose an iconic LGBTQ movie that have influenced generations since it realised, wich is a very pleasant easter egg for all of us !
