this war has reached its end, she supposes -- judges, from the lack of screaming, the sudden silence that’s prevailed over blood-shed, shrapnel, and broken buildings. the devastating spiritual pressure that had d a n c e d above the seiteitei, yhwach and ichigo she’d been told in passing, had petered. had quieted...                       what a forboding thing.                 she stands near alone in a field of debris, shihakusho in tatters, her zanpakutou shattered on the ground -- staring lifeless into the fog of war that had befell ground level, trying -- with all her might -- to focus. you see,  xiao li’s own blood runs in rivers to the ground -- thick, near-black, a miracle she’s even standing after her impalement. a large chunk weeps from her side. lacerations litter her body, bruised, battered. she’s ready to fall, ready to succumb when a body limps from the fog.

ichigo...                   and all desire to fall recedes, golden eyes widening at his appearance ; bruised, like she -- bleeding, not terribly, but weary. and legs once ready to buckle step forward with a strength she didn’t have just moments ago -- catches the young man’s torso in her arms before helping him to the ground. 

❝   ichigo...   ❞   said quietly, barely an ounce of power left to her voice, but enough to try. shaking hands quickly rip the remaining arm of her shihakusho into a ribbon of cloth to tie around his worst wounds, a stern and resolute look upon her face -- to help.

it shouldn’t be surprising, after all -- she’s spent the better part of the last 200 years putting herself second. starving to feed others, bleeding to sop up the blood of someone else. she supposes all mother’s are thrust upon such self sacrifice, but her’s has been especially gruesome. so to dote on ichigo, to wipe the blood from his face ( although truly the least of their worries, but the easiest to fix ) and tourniquet his wounds, to let her own malady be forgotten in favour of caring for someone else ?          truly unsurprising. 

and she can do nothing for shang -- his near-lifeless body being c a r e d for by another, by someone more skilled in resurrecting the dead. but she can help ichigo. she can... at least, in its small measure, provide comfort where none existed on a battle field. and that brings peace to her as much as him.

her hands are weathered and beaten, but the ripped cloth at ichigo’s temple is gentle, gathering blood and squeezing it out -- macabre -- onto the rubble.     ❝   you’re okay...  ❞   she breaks the silence with, a tiredness to her words as she heaves deep breaths. he could have gone to the 4th soldiers, littered around like helpful little ants, but he hadn’t. he hadn’t. he ---          her free hand grabs ichigo’s jaw, and lifts his face to look at her -- squeezing his cheeks ever so slightly. her expression is nothing but pride, for all her weariness.     ❝   you did it, ichigo.   ❞
