SurgAmy short Fic

Surge centric/ Realization of feelings/ Psychological/ Hurt very little Comfort

From the moment she regained consciousness, her life was not her own.

Brainwashed into obedience.

Into a personality not her own.

Forced to repeat the dogma of her creator until she was more him than she was ever herself.

She swears that when she passes mirrors she sees his reflection.

He is freewilled. So she will be as well.

He is cocky. So she will be as well.

He is short tempered. So she will be as well.

So on, so on. ad nauseam.

And she hates every bit of it. She hates Starline. She hates Eggman. She. Hates. Sonic.

To hell with everyone.

Standing in a puddle of water and blood, hunched over and breathless. She hates Sonic.

Laughing maniacally and triumphantly. She hates Sonic.

But hate isn’t enough. He smiles at her from his pointed rock. If she was one of his stupid friends she would wager its a friendly smile. But from below, behind the blinding electricity in her eyes, it’s nothing but a condescending sneer.

To hell with Sonic.

Surge knew the world was horrible. Afterall, it created Eggman who in turn created Starline. Who then created her.

But most of all, It created Sonic.

And all of this could’ve been avoided if Sonic had just done them all a favor and put them out of their misery from the very begining.

Everyone calls him their hero. Heroes save people and yet he’s damned her.

When she takes his place, she’ll have the guts to end problems before they even start. Hes a coward. She isn't. Thats the difference bewteen him and her.

She tells herself this. They’re different.

They’re different.

They’re different.

She’s different.

But when she could do nothing more but face the coppery taste of defeat, she and Kit had to take up residence at the resistance HQ where she would meet her.

As they laid undercover, the pink hedgehog, ‘Amy’ she had heard from Starline, insisted on not only welcoming them herself but also befriending them. Surge agreed to spend time with Amy. She told herself it was to gather more intel on Sonic as Amy knew him so well. Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer she firgured.

They did whatever came to the pink girl’s mind. Lunch, walks around the complex, crafts, and coffee dates. Through this brief time, Surge discovered just how different she really was from her doppelganger. He liked chilli dogs, but she always preferred hamburgers. He disliked pants, while she couldnt imagine wearing anything else. He likes books, She preferred movies. He was right handed, she was left. Hes a boy shes a girl. Hes blue, shes green. Its simple. But things came more simply to her around Amy. And as simple as they seemed these things belonged to her. They truly, really belonged to her. Not Starline. Not Sonic. But to Her. Surge.

As the time they spent together increased Surge began to forget why she even allowed the girl to drag her around in the first place. She bagan to look forward to it. She could feel herself falling for Amy. She was strong, lived without shame, put others first, and loved like there was no tomorrow. She watched how she loved the flowers, loved the rainy days, loved the people she helped. How she even loved people like her.

Surge could’t understand why she gave her the time of day.

To hell with these feelings!

Amy and Surge met up for brunch, as they usually did on slow, peaceful days. Amy had suggested they meet up at a cafe just outside of HQ.

“It sure is nice to get out every once in a while isn’t it?”

“Tell me about it, that place is suffocating.” Surge said exhaling and leaning too far back in her seat.

“I hope you haven’t been staying in your room all day” Amy said, half teasing half concerned.

“Me? Nahhh. Getting used to all this good-doing just has that effect on a girl. Ya know?”

Amy smiled, “Personally I find ‘good-doing’ to be rather freeing.” She mocked with airquotes.

“Pssh, yeah right. I heard all about how tired and worn down you got leading the resistinace.” Surge sat forward and leaned her elbows on the table. “So much for ‘freeing’” she mocked back.

Amy stared at Surge for a moment, “Its true, leadership really wore me down… buuuut It was because I was doing so much good that I put up with all the stress and paperwork. I couldn’t live with myself if I hadn’t!”

Surge despite her relaxed posure spoke sharply. “Is that why you bother with a basket case like me? More charity work to free your conscious?”

Amy pouted,” Of course not! You’re my friend Surge. I hang out with you cause I like you!”

She nodded her head with such an air of finality Surge couldnt do more than groan and look away. Trying her best to seem unaffected.

Suddenly Amy reached across the whole table trapping Surge in a tight hug, “Its true you can be kinda brutish but I know you’ve got a good heart! You’ve got a sensitive side I know thats just DYING to come out!”

Suge struggled as she broke the hug (Waoh since when was she so strong???) and shook her fist indignantly while blushing “Hey! Who do you think you’re calling sensitive!?!?”

Amy giggled, unashamed and unafraid of her. Happy as can be.

Before she relaized it, Surge had placed her feelings for Amy in the same coveted category as things that belonged to her.

As more time went on she couldn’t live with the flowery feelings in her chest. She wasn’t used to the butterflies in her stomach. She really didn’t like romantic pinning junk like that. It didn’t suite her. She HAD to confess before she blew a fuse or something! So she went looking for Amy; determined to get this all settled.

She saw Sonic talking with Amy. That was’t new. She learned that to be with Amy was to tolerate that blue eyesore... For the time being at least.

What was new was the look on his face.

He was smiling sheepishly. Amy held a flower in her hand. Blushing a beautiful shade of pink. She said something that caught the blue bastard off guard and he broke their eye contact in favor of looking away with casual exasperation. Amy seemed as content as ever as she briefly looked away too. Quickly Sonic’s gaze returned. He looked at her tenderly and longingly. And Surge recogized it immediately.

No.

This wasn’t in Starlines notes anywhere.

Theres no way.

Had Amy mentioned this before?

Sonic likes Amy.

Its staring her straight in the face.

The way She likes Amy.

No.

Surge likes Amy the way he likes Amy.

She swears that when she passes mirrors she sees his reflection.

Sonic is in love with Amy Rose. So she will be as well.

Surge felt herself slipping. Her heart thumping under the crackling of electricity in her veins.

Is nothing really her own? Even her feelings for Amy, those too belong to Sonic ?

Was Amy ever nice to her because she is her or because she is truely so similar to Sonic?

Does he really think about her the way she does? Does he really like the same things about her that she likes? There’s no way right!… right?…

Surge felt the world around her disappear. Her life is not her own. Not even her love is her own. It all belongs to Sonic. Sonic! Sonic! Sonic!

There is no place on this world for a double. And she hates him for it. She hates him for shaping the world around himself and leaving nothing- no space- no one for her! She hates him more than shes ever hated him before.

She could feel hot tears falling down her cheeks. Shes always hated crying.

She hates Starline. She hates Eggman. She hates Sonic. She loves Amy.

I think Surge develops feelings for Amy hard and fast but is very conflicted about the actual validity of her feelings, wondering if it’s a true, sincere love coming from her own heart or if it’s somehow a product of the brainwashing she experienced to destroy and replace Sonic. She wonders if she was rewritten to “replace” him in more ways than one. She doesn’t trust her head and can’t fight her heart forever.

I think Amy has a type (which is essentially Sonic and his copies lol) and so she can’t help but feel attracted to Surge. She still believes firmly in her love for Sonic but she can’t ignore these new and exciting feelings bubbling up in her heart. Amy is also curious if Surge’s feelings are sincere and is more than willing to help her discover the truth.

Some extra thoughts:

I like to imagine that they have a very intimate and intense situationship that forms purely on attraction and chemistry. Instead of being in "I can fix her" mode Amy's in "I'm so curious about this person I want to be around them all the time" mode. And for Surge it's kinda like the rest of her life where she feels something really intensely but can't understand why and it controls damn near every aspect of her psyche. She probably didn't even develop this insecurity until seeing a tender moment between Sonic and Amy and realizing in that moment that he likes her [too].

But now that she's got this idea in her head it's all she can think about. She lashes out and does foolish things to test her own heart. And Amy is curious if what surge feels is real or not because that would change everything. It would force her to put a stop to this and while she wants to help Surge she doesn't want this exciting new feeling to end so soon.

Amy has enough emotional distance from this situation that she feels comfortable waiting until the very last moment to call it quits but also the longer they get entangled together the more Amy starts to question her own heart as well. Surge is also emotionally everywhere. One moment she's in love with her, the next she's convinced this is all fake and can't stand to even look at her. But also, Amy isn't as in control of her own feelings as she thinks she is. Ultimately she is being led by her own desire for excitement and attraction and not just her willingness to help a friend.

This is the kind of relationship that can crash and burn horribly if they're not careful.

Honestly I got sort of burned out partway through this. Clearly it's not finished and honestly it'll probably be a while till it is. For one, my apple pencil decided to revolt against me during the second page, so making the final lineart was a royal pain 🥲

and secondly, I'm honestly very tired of spending so much time and energy over big projects and then having every. single. one of them. flop whenever I post them. I get it, mkay? People don't really like my art. I try not to care. I'll probably finish this eventually— because I do want to eventually— but not a minute sooner than when I really am personally motivated to do so. Unless this like actually breaches 1K. 🥲

Idk if this is a hot take. I hope sonamy has a little bit of angst between them in sonic 4 (with a happy ending of course).

Don't worry anom, because you're right and you SHOULD SAY IT!!!

You don't have any idea how I'm begging to Sonic and Amy have this super angst layer in their bond! Not only because of the romance, but because I really think is kinda impossible to NOT have.

Sonic at this point is very traumatize. He saw and did a lot and no way he okay. The explosion of angry in the last movie shows that he not healed totally. He still not talking about his feeling, still hiding things for his loved ones. He is not okay.

And I can feel Amy will clock him. She probably will see this and Sonic will not like this AT ALL. A thing is when you let people enter, when you give your hand, but is different when someone can read you. Is out of your control.

Besides, I know Amy will have her own problems.

BAM! You have the conflict!

Because Sonic leads with a lot of people, but never to someone so active in bond and and understand like he is. Tails, Knuckles and even Shadow were very...passive about knowing about Sonic in the sense that Sonic establishes the bond, reaches out, and listens to feelings. It's Sonic who says what he thinks is necessary to help the person, but not necessarily to vent like others do.

But Amy won't. She'll probably ask questions. Investigate, find out more. She'll want to know more than just the surface level, she'll really want Sonic to open up like Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow did. But Sonic is a mess, and it's going to be chaotic.

And don't even get me started on the fact that Sonic possibly also sees that there's something wrong with Amy that she's trying to hide, just like he does, and that bothers him.

Ugh, the story writes itself!
