"I was taking an abstract class and we were given these giant canvases. I, being me, immediately made the background space and started to paint small detailed things. I got frustrated with it and tried to swipe pink paint across it but it turned out brown and gross. My sweater got coated in paint and dirt (I was working outside) and my painting got dirty and gross as well and I started to panic. I went inside and tried to wash off my hands and my jacket and had a mini breakdown. My teacher was talking to me, trying to calm me down, and told me to take a break and go back in with a different color. Once I calmed down I walked back to the garage and grabbed the first can of paint I saw without even checking to see what color it was, and I poured it all over my canvas. It was purple. I started to spread the paint around with my hands and for some reason it was the best feeling in the entire world. Every emotion I'd ever felt was pouring through my fingertips onto the canvas. I grabbed the blue paint and continued to do the same movements. After about ten minutes I was done. This painting means a lot to me because I really discovered the emotion behind my art that I hadn't found yet. It's big and imperfect and full of layers and it is something that I can say is truly me." - Asha Berkes Age 16
