And I don’t think I’ve ever had this question asked, so... I’m answering this publicly, as more people might be wondering about this.
I’ve personally never bought or watched any shows on my phone, so I’m not entirely sure about the process. But, since I’m 100% bored. I decided to check it out. (Please note, I have an android phone. for iPhone’s it may work slightly differently.)
First of all, buying the show. Well, the buying process appears to be exactly the same. You’re going to need a VPN on your phone and then open your internet browser and just follow the steps on how to purchase a show.
To watch it looks like you’ll have to download the DMM動画プレイヤー app, which is only available in the Japanese app store. So, if you aren’t in Japan, you will have to use a vpn to download it from the app store (does that work?) or download an apk file to install it on your phone. (Which I did for the sake of this test. Got it from apkpure). So yes, obtaining the app could possibly be a challenge.
Then, once you obtained the app, you can turn off that vpn, because the video player app can be used without a VPN.
When you’ve installed the app and logged into your account, you’ll be presented with a list of everything you ever bought. (購入済 = purchased)
Once you click on the show you want to watch, you get two options: Stream the show （ストリーミング）or download the show （ダウンロード）.
If you decide to download the file: when your video has finished downloading, go back to the “main screen” and switch to the tab that says ダウンロード済 . You’ll get a list of all the shows you’ve downloaded and you can now watch them whenever you want. No internet connection needed.
Oh, and if you want, the app also allows you to stream the shows to your TV using a chrome cast.
Also, as far as I can tell, you can also watch live-streams using the phone app. (If anyone wonders about that.)
