Shimmer was shooting a propo for the District 9’s summer harvest when she met him. A suave, farm hand sourced for pretty decoration for the background. After all, everyone in Panem is beautiful. Everyone in Panem is happy, if you play the game you will be too.

He was different than anyone in her Capitol-based home, different from anyone she’d met in a long time. She’d grown accustomed to children – having served as a stylist and an escort when she wasn’t the Capitol’s main fixation attraction — an endless stream off tributes. But here was someone who liked her for her, not her title or wealth.

It took only a week of filming in various locations around the district to capture the necessary reels for the propo. Only a handful of golden sunset kisses to sew into her heart. Chain promised to remember her – the real her only a few people knew.

Shimmer daydreamed of bringing him to the Capitol. Life wasn’t ideal in D9; she’d witnessed that firsthand. All the people had were the Capitol’s leftovers. Fruit that wasn’t perfectly shaped, burned bread or Agriculture’s meager shipments of milk and meat. Wouldn’t he want to escape all that? Questioning his next meal, a full night’s rest or the repercussions of a failed harvest? Shimmer could whisk him away from all of it.

But when she spotted him in the city, Chain wasn’t there for her. Shimmer was baffled to see him cut out of wheat fields and pasted on the brightly lit streets. A finely tailored suit blended him in better than his farming outfit, but to Shimmer he’d stand out anywhere.

She’d only just booked transport back to District 9 to propose coming away, but here he was. He’d felt her wish! Those sweet nothings they whispered under a blanket of stars were realized. But … he didn’t turn when she called his name.

He was looking past her, at a young woman who sauntered by Shimmer and led Grain away. Through various contacts, Shimmer learned the girl was the privileged, only child of a legacy in money. The daughter of a casino owner, she apparently spotted Grain in the propo when it aired. Accustomed to having anything she wanted since birth, she staked a claim. He was summoned and offered a position to serve as her handsome arm candy with the promise of financial security for his family and a life of finer things he’d never taste in District 9.

Shimmer disappeared from the public eye for a month. She hid out in the seaside shacks of District 4, sealing away her heartbreak deep inside.
