My math prof puts this on the instruction page of all his exams
[ID: screenshot of black text on white background saying “an exam is just another means of communication between you and me to help me understand what you have learned so that I can provide you with guidance on how to improve. It is not a measure on your worth as a person nor your intelligence or aptitude as a student. Just give this your best try. END ID]
I think I am unable to articulate this clearly in a way that make sense, but attempts Will Be Made. Or you know what, simply consider this a ramble with no point lmao, just vibes and thoughts.
At the beginning of Episode 3, when the manager receiving the kickback harangues In Ah all the way to her work area/cubicle, and then makes the show of begging for mercy, falling on his knees, talking about his family, only to flip and raise his hand, and in essence show his true colors once In Ah soundly cuts him off. That scene, it gave me pause, reminding me of when men will in essence corner women in a public spot, like proposing to them, or asking them out, and thereby minimizing their ability to say No, or in some cases, completely taking it away, just so that the societal pressure of coming across as understanding, accepting, nurturing etc, will force women to acquiesce to something they don't want to.
I wonder, fictionally speaking, how much practice it has taken In Ah to get to a place where she does not flinch in the face of violence, or bow down to pressure, like when the Vice Chairman refuses to accept her request for more independence, so she simply walks away from the conversation. Once again, I have to view this through the lens of gender, because when the man does it, oh wow, he's amazing, so brave, and so steadfast, but what happens when it's a woman. Where is the righteous acceptance of her decision?
Instead, we have In Ah's team barely even blinking, and perhaps I am reading too much into it, but is there a sense that, those acts of violence are deserved because of her hard-line stances? Like if she didn't want people to threaten her, then she should simply acquiesce. Like, you get what you deserve. Similarly, when meet her on the rooftop, and do their little display of protesting, the general consensus is that is she is Doing Too Much. However, In Ah is behaving exactly as protocol dictates within an Audit Team. She is not unreasonable, as she mentions earlier to Ki Jun. Matter of fact, she has always been respectful and personable with everyone. Distant perhaps, but what, is your manager supposed to be your friend?
Then there's the HR Head scoffing, at her exit, angry that In Ah is exercising her free will, and as we find out a little later on, also angry and embarrassed that she's stuck in between a rock and a hard place with the Chairman and the Vice Chairman, except I think she too is forgetting that she can make choices. And those choices might cause people to dislike her. But that choice is available to her all the same.
Basically, ep 3 felt like series of scenes where In Ah is confronted time and time again, by insubordination, a lack of respect, the expectation to keep the peace, to make sure things keep smooth sailing, etc etc. Yet she takes it all in stride, and no doubt we will see how much it affects her later on, but to reiterate, what it cost her to get here, only she knows, and while the drama is being very stingy with the glimpses we get into her inner life, I think Shin Hye Sun is doing a great job of imbuing In Ah with emotion and life and exuberance, when the setting calls for it.

ik the show gives Collins her own reasons for moving away but i'm kind of obsessed with the notion that she was the first to fall under the weight of Robby's failing mental health. like when did you notice the room get colder Heather? did you find Robby's reaction on the phone when you turned it back on and saw all those missed calls strange at the time? how long did it take you to piece together what happened to Langdon because Robby wouldn't give you a straight answer? when did you notice he couldn't look you in the eye anymore? did you pick up on him listening to you less and less? at what point did that soft piece of himself he kept bare and open for you - always for you - get shut away for good? you knew your residency was coming to an end and you thought about leaving. but when you tried to understand and he snarled and snapped and asked how the fuck could you know what happened that day, you weren't there, was it the sign you were looking for or the straw that broke the camel's back?

if you learn to love bugs with all your heart the world will feel half as hostile and a thousand times as big
Theres a sentiment I'm noticing in the tags that I'd like to address. I dont think learning to love bugs with all your heart means forcing yourself out of discomfort you have with them overnight. It's about observing a different sort of being going about its life and deliberately trying to reframe your observations through a sense of wonder and delight. It's about cultivating a positive interest and curiosity for their ecology and behaviors. It's especially about trying to uncouple the value we find in them from how 'convenient' they are to us; to face head on the part of us that wants to assign moral evil to another organism who just happens to live life in a way that is not harmonius with ours. You can love insects in this way and still recognize your own health and safety needs. We are animals living side by side within a biosphere. This is how it is, sometimes.
I think this is important to cultivate because, if you are alive at all, you are coming into conflict with countless other people and things that dont owe you an apology for their existance and needs. If you are alive at all, you are encountering countless other people and things that harmful bias and personal discomfort have made repulsive to you. This is about bugs, but its also about way more than bugs.
It's hard to explain to the uninitiated that you can just go for a walk just about anywhere with a bit of green (and sometimes even in the heart of a city) and find like a dozen neat little unique guys if you're patient and observant.
People get really into bird watching but here's a secret: bugs are WAY easier to find than birds and they let you get a lot closer.
Try to approach the world with wonder and curiosity rather than fear and revulsion. Bugs are a great place to start.
I should've told you not to waste my time, But you're so magnetic, it's like, what's the use? I would wait forever as long as I'm waiting for you.
