Something I wrote at midnight cuz I couldnāt get it out of my head, idk if itāll make the Final Cut of the fic or not lol
(References to a medical condition involving the heart, itās a headcanon of mine that the Marufuji brothers have a genetical heart problems)
Jun lies awake, staring at the ceiling. It was well past midnight and he simply couldnāt fall asleep.
This was normal for him, he always struggled with sleeping, but it had been weeks since heās been back and heās finally gotten comfortable enough in this dorm that he doesnāt struggle every single night to doze off.
āShou?ā He whispers, so that if Shou isnāt awake he wonāt bother him.
āHm?ā The shorter boy sleepily hums out.
āI canāt sleep,ā is all he says.
Why is he telling Shou this? Heās independent, he doesnāt need friends, especially not ones like Shou.
āAnd this is my problem howā¦?ā Comes Shouās response, and heās right too. This isnāt Shouās problem or responsibility.
āNevermind,ā Jun rolls over and he hears Shou sigh.
āCome down here,ā Shou doesnāt phrase it in a way that really leaves room for argument but Jun will argue anyways.
āWhat? Are you suggesting what I think youāre suggesting?!ā Jun sputters, sitting up suddenly. Shou doesnāt say anything for a long minute.
āWhen I was around eight years old, I had the scariest seizure of my life. I had been arguing with Ryou in the car when out of frustration with me, he turned the music up really loudly. I had yelled at him to turn it down before going faint and having my seizure,ā Shou began, and Manjoume twists his head down, unsure of where this was about to go. āWhen I woke up, I was in the hospital and my parents told me I had Long QT Syndrome. It meant I could never quite be normal again, but it also meant I had to stay in the hospital a lot. Up until I was about 11, my life was the hospital, and I never could sleep there.ā Jun feels odd hearing this, why was Shou telling him this? Was Shou gonna die sometime soon?
āIāmā¦ sorry?ā Jun gets out, because heās so confused what heās supposed to say to this?
āDuring that time, Ryou used to visit me a lot, heād come to the hospital after school and just sit with me and tell me all about his day, and sometimes when I couldnāt sleep he used to lay next to me in bed and brush my hair or hum that song you heard me humming in the shower,ā Shou explains further and now itās starting to make sense.
āThe song was āBeautiful Boyā by John Lennon, itās an English song thatās why I was shocked to hear you humming it,ā Jun mumbles, but he knows Shou hears him.
āIām offering to try and help you sleep using the method my brother used to get me to sleep,ā Shou cuts to the chase. āItās the only thing that really worked on me as a kid,ā Jun gives in, he gets out of bed and crawls down the ladder, awkwardly getting into bed with Shou.
Stiffly he looks up at his own bed.
āYou know, closing your eyes helps,ā Shou huffs from beside him.
āReally? Good thinking,ā Jun sarcastically comments, but he listens and shuts his eyes.
Carefully, and shyly, Shouās hand meets Jun hair, and he almost flinches away.
But when those delicate fingers scratch all so gently against his head he finds his tense posture easing. Suddenly, Shou begins humming, and Jun recognizes the song.
And all though Shou is merely humming the tune, not singing the song, Jun can still hear the words echoing in his mind.
His body gives in, accepting the darkness behind his lids, accepting Shouās delicate fingers and soft humming.
His body naturally craves the warmth beside him, or maybe itās the comfort, but he turns slightly to the side and he feels Shou adjusting himself.
Faintly as the world closes around him, he feels Shou withdraw his hand and getting comfortable himself.
Now he can hear the faint echo of the other manās heartbeat in the mattress.
What a delicate heartbeat, soft and tender, much like Shou himself.
He catches himself in the thought, referring to Shou as soft and tender was weird, but he lets it go and blames it swiftly on sleep deprivation.
The moment felt oddly intimate to Jun, as his mind began to wander into the space of dreams.
Oh well, at least he actually fell asleep.
