like truly there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching game franchises go from 2d art that's filled to the brim with personality and near flawlessly executed to middling 3d models.

There is a reason people (me) don't consider dd or soj canon ace attorney games while games like Prof Layton vs Ace Attorney and The Great Ace Attorney are still canon and it's because of the presence of one dude

That's Shu Takumi. I don't even believe in auteur theory (the idea that a single developer genius makes a work good or bad) but it is undeniable that every game without this man in it suffers a serious drop in visuals, music, writing, and overall cohesion

Likewise, you should go play Ghost Trick because that's also a Shu Takumi game and it has more sauce even than ace attorney

I 100% agree with you about shu takumi's ace attorney games having a secret sauce that the rest of the games don't have (and not considering 5/6 canon lmfao) and i think it's more than fair to say his writing is fantastic and brings a ton of life to every project he's in. but the people responsible for the art and music are incredibly talented in their own right and I think it's worth mentioning them by name here!

The art director for both plvspwaa and the dgs duology is Kazuya Nuri, who got his start working on ace attorney as the lead character design for AA4 and rise for the ashes. he also did additional character designs for ace attorney investigations

joining Nuri + Takumi in both dgs and plvspwaa is composer Yasumasa Kitagawa, who worked on the courtoom themes for VS and then is responsible for the majority of the dgs soundtrack, with the rest (mostly a good handful character themes) being the work of Hiromitsu Maeba. Kitagawa also rearranged the ghost trick soundtrack for the recent rerelease!

Ghost trick's original composer was Masakazu Sugimori, who was also the composer of the original phoenix wright: ace attorney for gameboy and returned to rearrange many of his songs for the DS rerelease.

Ghost trick's art direction was handled by Koki Kinoshita, who hasn't done anything else on other Shu Takumi's project but is a veteran capcom artist of over 20 years and is a credited artist on many of their largest franchises like street fighter, resident evil, devil may cry, and monster hunter.

great stuff. i think the huge overlap in creatives between most of these projects just goes to show that having a really strong team all the way through makes everyone's work end up feeling like much more than the sum of its parts

I don’t fw the canon design too much (feminized, diff plastron from show, sudden round in sharp shape language etc) so far but I will see what I can adjust! Like making it a makeup thing and interpreting it as her self expression even behind mask got me 🧠 thonking . Not keeping that pink as the reg tho

hence her bonding with Mikey first, expression was something she hadn’t been able to do in non combat ways a long time. But the battle one is equally important to her, and Casey and Raph get a new hardcore training partner

claws continue to be kept sharp as even with her battle skill with several weapons, it serves as an extra she can always keep on her. Quite possibly her main weapon when close enough
